  1. As mentioned previously, 1994. Eh? This forum didn't exist in 1994. Eh, but Jump Up did.
  2. Well, I liked the Barney Kessel material (El Tigre) and some other material. I suppose it is true there is a fair bit of material that would never have been reissued except in the context of a complete set. One man's meat is another man's poison. You may rightly assume that many of the fanatic lovers of doo-wop music (a musical genre where "a vocal group called the Orioles" were one of the trailblazers and seminal early groups - even though the album reissued here admittedly was not their most essential output) will find most of your own preferred musical fare of post-late 50s modern jazz just a load of dissonant, disjointed, disorganized noise. And from their very own vantage point they cannot be proven all wrong. Tastes do differ .... That's life ... I certainly understand what you're saying, but how were you able to get all of that about my preferred musical tastes out of that one post? I believe you may be making some assumptions yourself! Glad to hear that my poison is your meat! I was just observing that a steady diet of any ONE type of music with the "sameness" contained herein can leave one dazed. I do not think it's unfair of me, btw, to point out that I was not happy, for instance, to receive a comedy album in what I thought to be a boxed set containng only music. Fwiw, doo-wop music may not exist in my world simply because of my age. Also, fwiw, I happen to own the HRS box, and it is one of my favorite Mosaics.
  3. As mentioned previously, 1994.
  4. Where ya been?
  5. I've now been through 15 discs of this set, and feeling a little dazed! There's more than a fair amount of cheese contained herein. I, for one, might end up using disc 14 as a coaster. It contains a sappy recording by a vocal group called the Orioles and a verrrry corny comedy album. Oy! That being said, there are some very nice albums included in this set. Some nice vocal surprises. However, I don't know if I'd rate any of this (other than the archival Bird, Pres and Miles) above other so-called 2nd tier music. So, buy with caution.
  6. I've been through the first 7 discs. The sound on this is more than acceptable. The packaging is pretty decent for the price, even if the research within the booklet falls a little short.
  7. Check out the William Hooker/Thomas Chapin duo and Pascal Niggenkemper cd's from this label!
  8. Not usually a fan of Maroney and his "prepared" piano, but this release utilizes the underrated skills of trumpeter Dave Ballou to great effect. And Ned Rothenberg and Mike Sarin aren't too shabby either. Glad I took the plunge!
  9. Ones (on sale) that I have and enjoy are: Michael Attias - Renku in Coimbra Avram Fefer - Ritual Denman Maroney - Udentity WHO Trio - Less is More John O'Gallagher - Dirty Hands Michael Blake/Kresten Osgood - Control This Conference Call - Poetry in Motion BassDrumBone - The Line Up Michael Blake - Right Before Your Very Ears Gerry Hemingway - The Whimbler In addition, you might consider paying full freight for some you don't already have that are not on sale. I haven't seen these cheaper elsewhere, and shipping is free. A couple of my faves are: Mauger (Mahanthappa/Dresser/Hemingway) - The Beautiful Enabler Chris Lightcap - Deluxe This is really a great label. I can't say that everything they release is my cup of tea, but of the many that I have, I'd be hard-pressed to name a clinker.
  10. Miles' Cellar Door box set is currently $64.99 with free shipping at Popmarket!
  11. I wonder what he thinks of Garzone.
  12. You're mistaking me for someone else. sorry, thought you were christlieb!
  13. And I'm just noting that all the ECM bashing is tiresome. Nobody twists the arms of musicians to become musicians. So they must learn to deal with the landscape they exist in. And not bitch about it. You've recorded for Teekens. Did you find him less "Kaiser"-like than Eicher?
  14. I think there may be two albums with that lineup, as well as two with Evan Parker, Barre Phillips and Tony Oxley, and both of those Eicher-assembled groups leave me cold. I just don't think they gel. I hear the Bley, Parker, Phillips trio as very successful, an update and development of a giuffre trio in an oblique way. They are both trios, no Oxley. Oxley appears with Bley only on two ECM releases. under Surman's name on "Adventure playground" and the collective attribution "In the evenings out there" - both from the same session, I believe - Surman, Bley, Oxley, Phillips. Again, works for me, fine playing by all I like them too. Though it's 'Not Two, Not One' that I particularly like of those later ECMs. I don't think it's a matter of what works. Just different musicians going at it different ways. Though given that it's now known that Manfred has taken the the next step in his conspiracy and bought the whole Blue Note and Fantasy catalogues with the intention of deleting them and remastering them in Munich, who knows what dastardly designs he had here. I know right --- that SOB. If you're more worried about the sound, you just aren't listening to the music. Who cares whose idea what was. If the music moves you, that's what counts. I find the comments made about this, especially by one of our resident musicians upstream, quite surprising. Many of his contemporaries have absolutely no problem working with Eicher, and some even relish the opportunity to be given a platform to have their music heard.
  15. A 17 year old Demi Moore debuted on GH as Jackie Templeton, a reporter who had a thing with Tristan Rogers' character (forget the name).
  16. Sodom of America? Pretty ig'nant remark if you ask me.
  17. More dysfunction from a New York team. What a surprise!
  18. Some might say never reached before or since.
  19. Why so literal, guys? I was making a point about how a $5 savings is hardly worth the trouble. Are ya that bored?
  20. In this economy, it's difficult to argue against savings of any kind. But with a limit of 1 gift card per household, this is hardly worth the energy it takes to click all the appropriate buttons to order it! I was thinking I'd order 10 or so, and come out with a nice $50 savings. No such luck.
  21. Listening to Asha now. This is great stuff. And yes, Eric Gravatt is in fine form!
  22. That's only if you choose the third-party seller fulfilled through Amazon UK option. Unfortunately, they refuse to ship this to the US. Significantly higher price if you choose the direct from Amazon UK option. This set is currently cheapest through Amazon Germany since it is a German product. If you're interested, you can check it out here: www.amazon.de Went for the Deutsch option couple of days ago - The Music Shop via Amazon Germany - total cost was just over 47 euros (33.34 plus 14 shipping to Australia) I just got a shipping notice today.

  24. I'm not trolling, and I bring up a very valid point. If you have no sympathy for those he infected, then it's you who have some integrity issues. And yes, I know promiscuity runs rampant in b-ball. Shawn Kemp: 12 kids from 11 women. D'oh! And fwiw, Magic was one of my favorite players during my childhood. I fully and happily recognize his greatness as an athlete. That does not excuse his indiscretions. Sorry. One cannot grow up in NYC and NOT be a basketball fan.
  25. That is a Muse/Fields trademark.
