  1. If one looks closely at the pictures of the box, one can see those ridiculous "Original Jazz Classics" logos on the album covers. This implies to me that Universal/Concord just repressed old masterings of the cd's. Hopefully someone can confirm otherwise.
  2. Speaking of the wacky tin box packaging, is anyone gonna take their chances with the Hip-O Clifford Brown?
  3. Is the first Holiday set like the Ella Songbooks set? Wonder why they discontinued the "handsome" packaging on the Billie but not on the Ella.
  4. Do you mean that the Doors are great by association with a great era for music?
  5. You were lucky NOT to see the Clash! I'm guessing Pete was trying to perpetuate that mod v. rocker crap. Rebellion and all that other stuff.
  6. It was '82. In his infinite wisdom, Pete picked the Clash to open. Oy!
  7. Like right after Quadrophenia!
  8. Why? Are you looking for a piece of the action?
  9. How you you possibly know what my criteria for "dated" is? I too have been around the block many more than a few times as far as music is concerned. Miles Davis, for instance, never sounds dated to me. Hell, neither does Duke Ellington. The Doors, to me, were very much a product of their time, maybe moreso than many other bands of that era. Picture it: disenfranchised baby-boomers who had had enough of their parents, their government and their war. Manzarek's organ sound didn't help matters much either.
  10. With all due respect, I'm not sure I could disagree more. Everyone's entitled to their own tastes in music.
  11. He should be so lucky. The Doors are a classic example of right place, right time -- which is why their music sounds more dated than that Gil Melle futuristic soundtrack album
  12. Whew, thank goodness it's not something new.
  13. Ok. My point was that I have duplication.
  14. Too bad. The Mangelsdorff's are the best of the lot, by a VERY WIDE margin. Yes, they're great! The two 2CD sets are around cheap though, and the live one has some of the finest Mangelsdorff around! The 5CD sets are fairly expensive (around 35€ is the best I saw), but I still had to get them, of course! Haven't made my way through all of the music yet so far. Just in case: to have Mangelsdorff's full MPS output, you need: - Originals Vol. 1 (5CDs, one album per CD, in a flimsy box) - Originals Vol. 2 (same) - Live (2CD set) - Solo (2CD set) - & Friends (this one came out back with the first batches of MPS reissues done by Universal, it's not duplicated in any of the more recent sets!) Yup, I have ALL of it. I also have the 2 double disc Originals series with 3 albums each on 2 cd's.

  16. Although it doesn't say it on the website, this has been pushed to at least mid-2010 because Mosaic has yet to finalize all the licensing agreements. Frankly, I'm surprised Mosaic would go so far as to announce a set if they hadn't secured all the rights. Isn't that the very first thing you'd do? Your customer base is already a little gnarly about catalog availability so why run the risk of further antagonizing it by having to pull the plug on a much anticipated release? I'm not at all impugning your credibility, but can you tell us where you got this information? Thanks. I live in NY, and have been a customer for 17 years. I call them frequently for info, or just to shoot the you know what. Frankly, I had the same reaction as you did at first. I asked why it was announced on the site, and was told that although they are relatively certain they will obtain necessary licensing, the process takes much longer than any of us non-business types here might think. Does this work for you? Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like you might have taken my question the wrong way. That was certainly not my intent. No problem! I wouldn't have posted that information without having gotten it directly from the source. Keeping websites up to date is not a high priority in tough economic times. That being said, Mosaic does a better than average job. I have a feeling that we'll see just a handful of reissues from Mosaic over the next couple of years.

  18. In 1975, the great Rory Gallagher was touring the US as the opening act for Bachman-Turner Overdrive. I didn't see the show, but I've seen Rory's Montreux Festival performance from 1975 on DVD. How those hacks from BTO followed that, I'll never know. Gallagher's Irish Tour '74 DVD (and CD) is also not to be missed. What a monster musician he was, one of THE great guitar players, from such an early age (what was he, 20 when the first Taste albums came out?). Hard to believe he passed so young. I agree. I saw him at Shea Stadium in 1976, opening for Robin Trower opening for Jethro Tull. It was a killer show with Trower supporting Bridge of Sighs and Tull supporting Too Old to Rock and Roll, Too Young to Die. Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention that this was the first concert I attended.

  20. Jerry Roche, who owns and runs Mighty Quinn and is part of the Mosaic family, was pretty pissed off that he paid licensing fees for the Pepper Adams reissue, and Pujol obviously did not. Btw, it's my guess, and this is pure conjecture, that Pujol runs Fresh Sound, Lone Hill, Gambit, RLR and ALL of those other pirate labels.
  21. Probably not their choice. Jordi Pujol is the Spanish Godfather!
  22. That one could be interesting indeed... The Blues Hot and Cold (1960): Bob Brookmeyer (v-tb) Jimmy Rowles (p) Buddy Clark (b) Mel Lewis (d) 7x Wilder (1961): Bob Brookmeyer (v-tb-1,p-2) Jim Hall (g) Bill Crow (b) Mel Lewis (d) But then I'd have seen a few options for a Brookmeyer Select (either with some of the Verve stuff, though I don't know when his Verves turned crap/pop, or maybe picking up where the existing one ends, with "Portrait of an Artist", "Ivory Hunters", the Mercury "Jazz Is a Kick" and then some of the Verves. Portrait of an Artist and Jazz Is a Kick were just released on this: http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/record.php?record_id=5353
  23. You're one of the lucky ones. I've been trying to escape -- like Kurt Russell -- for a very long time. Work and kids are keeping me here for now.
  24. not to derail the thread, but if i'm gonna read some of these threads it's not possible for me to see something like this and not comment. that seems like a very flatly racist comment. what the fuck? all indian people act and feel arrogantly superior to everyone else? it's part of their culture? wow... i haven't heard his music yet so i can't comment there... Two questions spring to mind: 1- Why are you reading so much into what I said? 2- How do you know I'M not Indian?
