Duke: Carnegie Hall Concerts: 1943-1947
JETman replied to mjzee's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes, that was him. He lived in Westchester County, NY at the time. Since I live there, this made it a very painless and easy transaction. If I recall correctly, he had quite a sense of humor. -

According to what I can gather, it is not! For Duke at Carnegie in the 40s completists, there is also that 2CD on Vintage Jazz Classics from the November 13, 1948 concert It contains what is supposed to be the only performance of 'Lush Life' by the Ellington orchestra! It appears to be long gone. I think I got my copy directly from the gentleman who owned Vintage Jazz Classics (can't remember his name) in the late 90s after it had gone OOP. -

Cheap at amazon germany. I'm afraid, though, that if these follow suit with the Complete Miles and Sonny Rollins Prestige albums sets, the mastering on these discs will be from the late 80s/early 90s. No change from orginal issue -
Although I like some of the records you mention, I definitely beg to differ. Redman and Blackwell's "Red and Black in Willisau" and Blackwell's "Walls and Bridges" jump to mind immediately as exceptional records. Some of Motian's, Berne's and the Berne/Formanek/Hirschfeld collective "Loose Cannon" are also standouts.

All bias against ECM aside, what the hell is ECM phrasing? Do you really think Eicher pulled Motian aside and said "have your guys use ECM phrasing"?

Neither can I, but I manage to place a viable order with them every so often. The effort is definitely worth the $20+ saved to me. Here's a tip: all Amazon websites are layed out similarly. Open up 2 browsers -- one with the US site and one with the French, and go from there. When, and if, an English site (other than Jazz Loft) gets these, keep in mind that they will be more expensive than Cam Jazz and Amazon France because the price includes the cost of importing them from overseas, which is passed on to consumers like you and me.

[quote name='tranemonk' date='23 March 2010 - 10:48 AM' timestamp='1269355711' post='1010057' That's very good to know.. I just cancelled my jazzloft order and will order through CAM jazz... thanks for the info! Based on current exchange rates, the price from Amazon France is about $63 for 2 of these sets shipped.

Cheapest here: http://www.amazon.fr/Compilation-Enrico-Rava/dp/B003627ON0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1269351814&sr=1-2 All are the same price, but not available until 4/9/10.

Which Board Member turned you on to Which Artist?
JETman replied to Bright Moments's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Dan Gould and Kevin Bresnahan turned me on to Venus lp's, thereby helping me to understand that bop was really invented in the new millenium. -
They did this about 5 years ago for a short time. Things like Verve LPR's were selling for about $7 list.

Just for the record, my replacement showed up in less than a week! Excellent service, and very easy to deal with. Basically the cd was sent with no questions asked.

Ahmad Jamal and Carter/Bradford Mosaics can be pre-ordered
JETman replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Oh joy.....yet another blow by blow analysis of a disagreement. I think everyone's familiar with Dan's reputation for dealing with those who don't agree with him. I'll take the higher road here, and let it rest. -

Or, if you really didn't want to be offensive, you could simply say the obvious, that they are different players with different conceptions. Stating that Gene Harris "could only dream" of playing like Jamal implies that he wanted to or tried to and failed at it. I could just as easily say that Jamal could only dream of playing like Gene Harris or driving an audience into a frenzy like Gene did. Uh, no. Crosby and Fournier were something special, and so were Bill and Andy. Different doesn't in anyway mean better. I think you've listened to one too many Eric Alexander Venus lp's. -

I think MC said that he believed a Three Sounds set would not sell well. I like their Blue Notes as much as the next guy. At the risk of sidetracking this thread (and offending Blue Note lovers everywhere), Ahmad Jamal was doing things with space and time that Gene Harris could only dream of doing. These Jamal Argo and Chess recordings are legendary amongst jazz collectors and musicians alike (ask Miles Davis). Crosby and Fournier were an exceptional, telepathic rhythm team. Dowdy and Simpkins, while being solid, were not nearly at their level. On the surface, Jamal's music may appear to lack variety, but if one listens closely, there's alot more going on there than in a Three Sounds record. -

Jamal will be 9 discs, set for July. Threadgill will come out slightly later. -
You can find all info here. They're highly recommended. There's a second address, if needed, hepjazz@uk2.net. Hope you get a positive result, Jetman. I did as far as a response goes. We'll see if it shows up.

What is the email address and will they mail to the US?

Thanks, Hans.

What is the general consensus on CD Japan??? Do they operate like the Tower (Caiman) of the Far East, or are they reliable and legit?
-
I know there's alot of love here for Hiroshi. How does he compare with CD Japan as far as price, reliability, and shipping charges go? Any help would be appreciated.

If Universal ever gets around to it, this would probably end up in Volume 4 of the John Coltrane Impulse Albums boxed sets.

I must have gotten lucky or something because I only placed my order Thursday night. I ordered it from Amazon. They say it should be here in a week and a half or so. Looking forward to it! Getting hold of those Storyville boxes can be an adventure. gregmo you guys are so spoilt! you can easily obtain recent Storyville releases through amazon.de (or amazon.fr - it's always worth comparing the prices, sometimes amazon.co.uk might be an option, too). we yurpeens order from the US often and just live with shipping costs of 10$ or so for a single crappy disc (and the jewel case will be uselessly crunched half of the time, too...) You know, last I heard, we still have an open door policy here in the good ole US of A (despite 9/11)!!!!
