I love Evan's PSI list BTW. The Incus reissues such as Saxophone Solos, Monoceros etc contain some essential earlier EP. Since I no longer 'collect' I've heard only a smattering of the rest, but I have recently picked up my first title with trumpeter Peter Evans who is an instantly riveting player with wonderful tone. From the Emanem list proper I am keen on ISKRA 1903 Volume 1 (1970-72) - a classic 3 CD document which is a greatly expanded issue of an original Incus double LP. I am going to start giving that one as a Xmas present! ISKRA 1903 was Rutherford/Bailey/Guy in its first incarnation.

They announced a reissue - I believe that copies were ready to go - but were forced to withdraw it when their rights to it were contested. Shame.

can asians save classical music?
David Ayers replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Classical Discussion
I read most of that article though might have skipped a bit, but I didn't notice much discussion of the related subject about how regular orchestral tours to China (in particular) are an important part of the activities of major Western orchestras (such as the LSO). In general I find the argument about the death of classical music a bit tired. Every concert I go to is either sold out or at least very full (in venues with a capacity of maybe 2000). Maybe I only go to the best things. I might be wrong but I think that classical music is something that a lot of people gravitate to as they get older and they start to pursue further interests. -
pictures of jazz musicians WITH CATS...

Sorry, what was the question? -
We should have thought of trying to do that years ago! Somebody must know how to reach them -and the list of things-to-do would still be a long one!

How did I miss that thread? It's easily done! FWIW I think your thread is equally valid.

whilst we're all trying to help identify "Frank" (sorry Bev, no idea) what do people make of Music Improvisation Company on ECM? I've often thought to track it down but never got round to it It's on itunes. Pleasantly creaky listen!

'Classical' music from the last 50 years (or so)
David Ayers replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Classical Discussion
I started a thread on Boulez (uh, a bit quiet) so I won't repeat all that, and I won't make a list either but just mention one composition at a time. So my first up is Ligeti's violin concerto. Maybe other Ligeti like the Piano Concerto is ahead of this one, but I like this, love the eccentric squiffy tonality (including a passage for two ocarinas) but still a likable and sufficiently mainstream work that it has been taken up by several performers (including Tasmin Little, remarkably). P.S. I am going to talk about compositions not about CDs. -
favorite Romantic-era or Modern wind quintets
David Ayers replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Classical Discussion
Janacek's Mladi has six winds and there are quite a few pieces for piano and winds that might fit your bill. -
favorite Romantic-era or Modern wind quintets
David Ayers replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Classical Discussion
There are notable wind quintets by Ligeti, Françaix, Barber, Birtwistle, Hindemith, Carter, Kurtag and as mentioned Nielsen. -

"first time on CD" Blue Note re-issues in last 10 yrs?
David Ayers replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Re-issues
"Fats" or not, he could have straightened his shirt. -
I've spun Snakeoil several times through and really like it. My only other Berne is Pre-emptive denial - Screwgun. I'd hardly played until the last few days it but it too is excellent and makes me wonder why I've ignored Berne's output. I bought his early albums on Soul Note a long time ago. I thought they weren't that fully realized and never really continued. Then just recently I listened to a couple with his band with Taborn and enjoyed his ability to fashion long lines and make sense over very long arcs of time. I revisited the Soul Notes and found the same thing there, though they were, as I thought, not quite there yet. So now I'm with you on that and with this new one he is rising up my personal charts.

there is a drummer on Snakeoil , it's alto/clarinet/piano/drums oops. must pay greater attention. Still intrigued but for different reasons now .... Get over to youtube and search for los totopos! And tell that Ches Smith to get his foot off the snare and put his shoe back on. Where do they teach technique like that! Maybe he's angling for a solo gig at Oto...

GA - I'm grateful for your posts but I wonder if you could maybe just quote excerpts or provide links? The material is all on the ECM website, and it clutters up the thread. Just a request.

Are you trying to feed the flames??? Yes. Some great music on this disk though - much of it is about collective counterpoint, sometimes with the sax in a rhythm role. Long and hypnotic melodies. Given the direction the other thread took (and your complaints about it), I have to say that I'm flabbergasted that this would be your desire. I've been a huge fan of Berne's for years. I have probably about 99% of the discs he appears on. I have no doubt that the music contained on this upcoming disc will hold at least some interest for me. That being said, I almost always have to be in the "right" mood to listen to his stuff. No I was teasing. I am on the second time through now. It's a fantastic disc in terms of the group counterpoint, the whole group feeling, a real labour of love. All really well played-in. I should think he's delighted with it.

They must have forgotten to devalue their currency against the SFr, unlike the rest of us.

Arrived. Slightly soft-grained mix (ahem). Slightly contemplative beginning (ahem). Some very interesting passagework (phew).

Still waiting for mine. There are clips of Los Totopos on youtube. I believe. But I would never access content for which rights holders had not been fully compensated. Let alone bootlegs. No way. The internet may be your friend but it is not mine. No sir.

Well, Boustrophedon is not electro-acoustic. Moment's Energy, which admittedly did get mentioned and is electro-acoustic, is actually musically interesting and not just atmospherics (though, as often in this genre, pulse is hard to come by...).

I like the material with Iskra 1903 - Bailey with Paul Rutherford and Barry Guy - especially the 3 CD set on Emanem, 'Volume One'. Some titles are hard to find - many in fact. I like early stuff myself whether solo or group - stuff with Brotzmann and/or Bennink and/or Parker. There's a lot of variety in later stuff. Lots of titles in print still.

My copy still hasn't arrived...

I was going to start a new thread on that one then thought better of it. I thought maybe if I pretended it was on Blue Note... I seriously wish people didn't try to suppress discussion of ANY music from this label - even when it is by artists they supposedly support. The pair of records I was discussing are among the very few I have heard in recent years that are trying to do anything a bit different in the jazz uh continuum.
