Paul Lovens. Paul Lytton. Keith Tippett. Trevor Watts. The rest of that Chicago lot. John Tilbury Keith Rowe. Etc. Edited to remove a duplicates (I'm not the only one...)and correct claim about Buell Niedlinger...

Chick Corea. I could go on. It rather depends what you decide to count. Paul Motian. Like I say I won't go on but you see my point. Kenny Wheeler. There is a tendency in thinking about free jazz to emphasize only certain figures, often those not capable of doing much if anything else, but in any case romantically marginal. Keith Jarrett. See where I'm going with this? Herbie Hancock. Sonny Rollins. Jan Garbarek. John Surman. I could go on but I'm just gonna give Bitches Brew a spin. Oh wait...

I'm having a problem with the ignore cheesy double-entendres button... -
So on a hunch I put a copy controlled disk in the PC, opened WMP, and clicked rip. It ripped. This was a disk that previously installed its own player and tried to play on that. It couldn't even be played on WMP let alone ripped (PS this is why in Europe we all hate EMI). So I guess after cc was dropped the software writers just put in a work-around. In any case the OS and software in use now is already probably not compatible with the CC cr*p. End of story - but what a crock.

$52.50 Someone might consider this 'screwing the paying customers'. Downloads seem to be priced higher in UK in general, as recorded music always has been. This is a *big* difference though. In the era of physical product they could blame the cost of shop floor space and higher taxes; in the download era I guess they'll claim that the price of electrons in the UK is much higher.

Buddy Rich and Johnny Smith sets running low

Well, we had some pretty outstanding deals on Jazztet/Eldrige/Basie back in the day, IIRC. Perhaps not *quite* so bargaineous but in the that sort of area... -

Not Lille then. And the Duke/Ella booklet - how is that? -

Chelsea ! Yeah got it - it's Lille - who last won a match in 1977 By the way what is the Duke/Ella booklet like? The other consideration is the cost now of Mosaic relative to what else is going out there. Yes we all like to have the best, for sure, but equally there are many RVGs now which sell now for £4 ($6) including shipping, and thinking about MJQ I see that anyone buying up all the Avid 4lp-on-2cd sets of MJQ/Lewis/Jackson can pick up 16 lps worth on 8cds for £16 ($24) all in and have a kind of DIY version (well, not the same, but how much do you need, assuming you haven't got the better half of it already?). I bought the Mosaic Peterson for £24 ($36) inclusive but I might as easily have gone for the Avid for £10 ($15) (significant overlap and more CDs). The Billie Holiday for Columbia currently sells for £10 ($15). I mean yes we would like the best but it's a big leap from the 10s to the 100s of £/$ and its like the economics of importing fine wines or luxury cigars... -

Yeah strange you should start talking about a bulk order and a list - I was making a list yesterday with the same idea of ordering them all at once. The problem is, once I place ONE bulk order will I get the itch and immediately want to place another - in which case the savings turn into losings! Also when you start to think like that it can be hard to draw the line, like anything you don't put in the order is ruled out forever (well, I don't like Jamal much and I already have the best material in the set, but maybe I should buy it just in case, I mean I've never not enjoyed a Mosaic... and what about that Bobby Hackett...I've always liked lounge music with trumpet...). So do let us know how you get on, Yves, uh, ASNL77 (um, which is short for, uh...)... -
Same album titles - WAY different music.

Harder to find anyway than the McLean. If you have one you no longer need, uhh... -
Are there any box bargains currently available?
David Ayers replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
My OP Mosaic arrived. Packed in a robust though not rigid packet, and it was in perfect condition. The only one of the euromosaics to have the Mosaic serial no. on the spine! Sadly this is the last of the euromosaics which have kept me in as many (or more) Mosaics as I can get through for a few years now. Last for me personally and last of the series, I mean (I *really* thought the Armstrong was destined for euromosaic status but no...). So if I want any more it will be back to full price, international shipping, lousy exchange rate, and the kind of tax/duty/service charges that can cause a revolution. Those charges never stopped you, eh Flurin? Maybe because one Swiss Franc is worth about $200 (to judge by the prices in Zurich airport...). -

Well, I think they already know that they charge more than cost for European shipping... -
I think now that for athletics and endurance sports we should take it for granted that the winner will eventually be disqualified and just assume that whoever came second is the one who will actually go in the record books as the winner.

Looks like I got one. £24.99 inc. free shipping within UK ! We don't get many breaks over here so when we do it's celebration time. Yeah - the penance is that you have to listen to 8 or 9 hours of Oscar Peterson! (only kidding - I was waiting for a good price on this set and I jumped all over it) -
It's like two creepy guys snuck up to look in someone's bedroom window only to find the police waiting... On a more serious note - any due date on this?

Johnny Smith is a *great* guitarist - whether you want this big box set of mainly quartet recordings is another matter (I don't have it myself) but if you hear any of his stuff he'll soon have you wondering what you ever heard in uhh other guitarists who keep getting name-checked around these parts. -
Well - yes. If you like ST and enjoy Duke Pearson style arrangements, go for it. It's a pretty nice thing to have around and at that price it won't break you (I hope).

Secrets of the BN vaults
David Ayers replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I'd like to know what sort of gear RVG and Lion auditioned those typical blue notes on, and I'd like to know what sort of equipment they envisaged that the LPs would be played on. The typical BN sound from late 50s to mid 60s has the horns dominant in the mix, the piano recessed (though bizarrely still peak distorted), the drum strokes yes all there but without too much attack, and the bass a little muffled. In other words the horns dominate and there is not the even or if you like more democratic mix of beats and accents which I for one would prefer to hear in a jazz recording. Sounds like horns plus backing, with piano solos (usually weakly thought-through right hand tinkling affairs) as a concession to the pianist but hardly ever a highlight. So the recordings cater to the idea that jazz is an art of heroic hornmen, and tend to disassemble the music both hierarchically and spatially (which is why it usually sounds better in mono which at least brings all the accents together and gives more life to the 'interplay' or counterpoint). Now, I know when you hear a more modern recording which tries to set this right it can be fatiguing, but I wouldn't say that BN got it so very right - I think they made us hear soloists rather than music. -

Yes. So Englewood Cliffs is La Haye Sainte, Norman Granz is Napoleon, and that bl**dy harpsichord is Congreve's Rockets.
