Well a single maybe is an easier sell than a double, and a double than a quadruple. I guess it's about getting folks to buy them. Not everyone will want both volumes.

That's a nice one! I don't really know any of the recordings... When I heard AAM do it the orchestra were outstanding - really limpid and beautiful, so much better than the HIP of yesteryore. I can't be there, but I see they are doing it tomorrow, this time with Tim Mead.

I guess they would have told us what sources were used if they wanted to.

I heard this last year with Iestyn Davis. That was AAM. It can't be unusual to use a counter-tenor.

Jackie McLean's Post-1975 Recordings (All Labels)
David Ayers replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Recommendations
Which reminds me of the time I saw Jackie and asked him about his old Blue Note recordings and if he was still making money off of them. His rather bitter answer was that he never made any money off of them. He sounded pretty peeved and he wasn't joking. I was very surprised when I saw those latter day Blue Notes after talking to him about it. Of course, none of this explains that date he did with McCoy Tyner ("It's About Time") for Blue Note. Maybe they paid him enough to make it worth his while? Other people know this better than I do, but wasn't the practice to pay an advance, which was offset against earnings, and also charge all studio costs, also offset, and perhaps also the fixed fees paid to the other musicians, with the result that there were usually never any net earnings beyond the initial advance? -
Fascinating article. Thanks for the link.

Dr. McLean. -
Thanks for the review. Should that be 'Professor'? I do know he hasn't got his doctorate yet, so Mr may be correct. Poor old Professor Braxton who seems to have originated this 'Mr' malarkey commonly gets busted down to Mr. And he has a doctorate. Honorary. But still. Courtesy demands.

According to the Nimbus website they started to issue them in 2006. I guess you are right about the reason for the hiatus.
-
The cello concerto material is already on Spotify - not sure which the other new ones are. Lyrita seem keen to get their stuff up there. I notice that the disc you list is issued by Wyastone - i.e. Nimbus - so it may be they have taken over the reins.

Incidentally, when I called up the live footage of Konitz/Marsh I got the following text: "Warning: These stunts were performed by trained professionals in a controlled environment. Do not attempt to re-create any activity performed in this video." Turned out to be an ad, but...

Larry's selections are so great the thread should be pinned LK with WM on Atlantic I have on the Mosaic - I had actually never seen (or never noticed) the incredibly charming original cover!

Thanks again for these. Still pondering and dipping slowly. Basically I am interested in attempts to equalise voices and get away from soloist + comp model, but where the complexity of bop is retained. It makes sense that it is the cool/classicist musicians who would go in this direction.

it is there on Spotify in fact- good find: Benjamin Zander – Benjamin Zander Conducts: The Rite of Spring Don't know about more percussive - I have heard all the London orchestras play this and it is invariably like having your head hammered.

You've been peeling an orange wrong.

I also tie my tie wrong. I've been told so many times. Can't figure it out though. -
Actually there are several books on Swedish on Pettersson so Aare is not the only one that would bother. I'm not going to read any though.
-
Duh. Rite had been published. Are we saying he could neither read music nor leave Sweden to hear it? And re. the difference between substance (Ligeti) and sound-effect (AP) - give me strength. Like all those reviewers in the Wire who think any example of grungy electronica is Stockhausen. So from Moms in the last few weeks we have had Pettersson yes Boulez no. Hm.

Interested in Reece and Nistico. Not really the rest.

How did the last one go? And I'm not getting this idea that PD shouldn't be made available. Paul - can you explain your theory?
