  1. The Impulses were first for me and I worked through them all. I wanted him to go *on* but instead *I* had to go back, Atlantics then Prestiges. When I did it it felt more like an excavation. I think Jim's way of outlining how we should think about what we are listening to is pretty good. You *have* to hear them really in terms of where they are eventually going. But you have to hear them. I think it was Elvin Jones in an interview who said that if people have any John Coltrane albums they have them all. Like Jim R says - you just go for it, don't you?
  2. Ok they are all the same - some omit announcement, some also omit piano intro.
  3. @jazztrain: thanks! In fact I will check later - I just couldn't face it when I posted...
  4. Spotify seems to contain different versions of this tune by Bird, though I haven't listened to ascertain what they are, but the track lengths vary by more than a minute. A lot of them are from PD opportunists in Europe who are jamming up Spotify with meaningless reissues and compilations. Interested to know about the different versions (if that is indeed what they are), not so interested in the speculative copyright vigilantism.
  5. You don't want them , of course, but Rattle's Beethoven Symphones are going for 13.44 on amazon.co.uk http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beethoven-Symphonies-Sir-Simon-Rattle/dp/B008MB2B3S/ref=sr_1_4?m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1387282342&sr=1-4
  6. The Solti recording are Decca. Haven't checked EMI. And you're right about the Bayreuth box - the objective will be to make them complementary. In any case, it's all good - no-one will become less informed about the world by working through that DG box!
  7. Yeah loss of overview is why in the main I go one disc at a time. You can score thousands of CDs for pennies these days but, for me at leasst, it is bad feng shui. That said I have been thinking of changing tack since with most stuff one hearing is enough for me. That's where spotters comes in, I suppose...
  8. Not at all? Really? Hm. But they let you create an account!
  9. I've listened to it all but, uh, not that carefully....
  10. Yeah I guess that's it...
  11. Re. Wagner, these sets aim not to give away the shop. There are probably some better versions in the Universal catalogue - the Bohm Ring and Tristan (some prefer the Solti Ring but uh not me), the Thielemann Parsifal, the Abbado Lohengrin. So first choices which are probably strong sellers do not necessarily feature. I think that is why most of us here do not own more than one or two of these (it seems). I'd say the issue with Wagner is finding the time to listen, and the time investment probably could be matched by more careful cash investment. But what the heck, it's Wagner. For me, the only ones I *actually* listen to are the Ring, Tristan and Parsifal. PS you do get a big chunk of DFD in this set; you also get a big chunk of Domingo who is a great singer but whose German is not very German-sounding.
  12. Know what I mean? I suspect that most of what we hoover up on this board shouldn't really be the favorite of any right-thinking person. But within that there's a lot we agree on. I'm talking about the ones that are no way official but just hit the sweet spot. I'm not saying stuff that isn't good. I'm saying you find it great beyond what anyone else might think. All sorts of ways to come at this. I'll start with one of mine. Maybe seems like no more than a festival one off, but this William Parker title just gets me every time. I'm obsessed with it, in fact: That's a good record by any standard, but for me a favorite that shouldn't be (probably). Yours might be corny or even rubbish, but you love them. Just for fun!
  13. Don't know - I go there for information but rarely for orders....
  14. Good price on those naïve. I see DG are doing similar 3CD artist anthologies next year. The details are on their website. None of them for me, probably, as I boiught ones I wanted at the time. Although you never know...
  15. That Taylor Ho Bynum release is a bizarre hybrid format! All four tracks are on Spotify but - I did notice there seemed to be rather a lot for 2 CDs, soooo for those who don't know, here are the format options - http://firehouse12records.com/album/navigation-the-complete-firehouse-12-recordings
  16. I'll add my voice to Kirk. Though if I'm so keen why didn't I buy the original box - ?
  17. @ubu: thanks for adding the detail. I'm working from memory and on my phone, so can't even edit my slip-ups! I've got all that Corea on vinyl myself - that's probably why I skipped that CC version of Song of Singing when it was around...
  18. Some added to Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, I should have said. And hey I agree Song of Singing merits a domestic reissue - never understood why it didn't get one.
  19. Ornette has vetoed those titles. That's the reason. Re. Corea: Song of Singing is available on CD, albeit at import price, with 'Drone' from Circulus added (I think). Much or all of Circling In is on Early Circle, and some added to Song of Singing. That leaves you with three sides of Circulus, which will never be a priority release, I shoudn't think.
  20. Actually when you come to think about what 'we' are 'missing' you have to admit we've done rather well over the years, even recent years.
  21. Ornette Coleman, Crisis and Ornette at 12. And that impossible Fontana series would walk off the shelves.
  22. Agree the missing Braxtons are key. But, guess what, they are available to anyone who doesn't need the uh hard copy. But you already know that don't you? Luckily for me I'm one of the 3000 owners of the original. These days anyone doing a CD reissue does so knowing that everybody who has access to google has already got their stuff, so they are only selling to those who voluntarily pay. We've seen all the rationalisations for that over the years on this board among the people who purport to care for and support the music. You can have as much music as you ever need, and everything you want, for nothing. Why pay more? It isn't only blogs and torrenting, it is all the private trading, and it is all the trading of bootlegs as well - if you've got the 20 or 40 Sam Rivers or Roscoe concerts that have circulated, maybe that's all you need. Oh plus a sneaky copy or two because 'I spend so much on music anyway'. That's the market. I bought Willisau when it was issued in 1992. I paid about 44 UKP, which at today's USD prices would be well over $100. If hat issued Willisau at that price almost everyone would say it was too much and stick to their flacs. So hat already have to issue it at lower cost, with lower revenues for everybody concerned, and even then most people will say they are waiting for it to come down, or they'll pick it up sometime, etc. These are just facts about the market. And this is what the fans are doing, not some 'other' people - only fans give a damn.
  23. What Ubu said, except illegal duplication is the source of this, not PD. On this board the anger deflected on to PD and streaming is all displaced guilt. Everyone has a justification for doing it (blame the owners they won't reissue it! Blame euro PD, they 'stole' it and so will I!). For that reason we don't talk about it, but it is the one factor. Well, that and lack of interest and market saturation. Who needs 200 Anthony Braxton records? No disrespect...
  24. I've got maybe 200 CDs I've not yet played. But I just stream away. Full marks so far for the Roscoe, Halvorson and Taylor Ho Bynum disks that are mentioned here...
  25. I don't see how you can go wrong with that Wagner set. That said, I only know the Solti Lohengrin (and it's the only Lohengrin I know!) So my advice is worth squat.
