2000 reissue with one grey marble LP. I almost think the album works best on CD but when this came up on Ebay I couldn't resist. Chuck, any idea why he nixed the gatefold for this edition?

Looks like they spread waaaay out on these tracks, and seeing how they can ride a groove like no one's business I'm interested to hear the results. This is from the same tour as Personal Mountains.

I have two lps in the "Father of Modern Jazz" box set with the same crew except for Buck, and they're possibly "reigned" in but it seems all want to play this way, with elegance and beauty. I love 'em! Yeah, I mean, how do you not love those guys, right? I hear ya'. But on this particualr album, there's a few cuts where they loosen up and play...uh, looser, and the rest sound kind of..."produced", maybe with an eye towards radioplay. 1968 had to have been a weird time to make a major label record like this. I know it's unreasonable to look at Milt Gabler & a date like this in 1968 and expect a Commodore-type 1940 thing, but still...not a bad record at all, really, just would have preferred just a teence a bit more looseness overall. What is this 5 record Hines set, btw? What label was it released on? Is it all live stuff? I might need to go a-huntin' for that one! MF Distribution. 3 LPs of solo, 2 quartet. I passed the damn thing up a million times for $10 at my old record store, fool that I am.

John Lloyd's Four and Five on Hatology is also quite nice.

Yeah, the Blackhawk box is OOP and quite pricey now. The two 2xCD sets can still be had for normal costs.

If I'm not mistaken the writers of the film version of THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY inserted jazz into the narrative. Matt Damon does a pretty cringey Chet Baker impersonation and carries around Bird and Dizzy Savoy 12"ers, alongside Chet Baker Sings and, erm, Complete Communion (the story is set in the mid-to-late fifties).

Good record, but my least favorite of the 1963-4 live albums for no fault of Sam's. The others are just too damn good.

Doesn't bother me either, though I prefer discreet. I have a reissue of MUSIC FOR PRANCING that has an address label and a small note saying which store the LP was purchased at and the date. I think that's neat.

I'm in the market for this album but I'm wondering which edition to get, the older CD with the drawing (by DSM?) or the newer Verve Original with the photo of Stan. I seem to recall the newer edition having an edge for some reason or another, but perhaps I'm imagining that.

Never had a problem like that. Mostly I'm just disillusioned by people's absurd expectations for Buy It Now items. When I find the same items up for auction I usually walk away with them handily for about 1/10th the price.
