Just noticed the 1965 Newport set is now on Spotify (and other services, I assume). Details are here: https://www.wolfgangs.com/music/cecil-taylor-quintet/audio/20020001-51297.html?tid=4844092

Worth noting that with the exception of his sideman work on Babi and The Black Ark, none of his own music is currently in print, and most of what you can even find second hand is exorbitantly expensive -- most titles are scattered across a handful of long-defunct European labels. It's a damn shame; I don't think I can think of another comparable musician whose work is so difficult to hear in any capacity. And I don't exactly know what a viable solution would be.

This showed up the other day with a lovely postcard from Barry. Only once through so far, but it's very, very impressive work.

I sort of figured as much about the tapes, but I'm guessing there's still some work that could be done. A similar wishlister would be a definitive CD edition of Alabama Feeling. The one that came out in the 90s was a dreadful needle drop. I'm sure there's an unplayed copy out there somewhere that could be put to work. It seems crazy to me that none of Arthur Doyle's work is available.

I'm sure this has been mentioned in the thread, but one that still boggles my mind is Jimmy Lyons - Other Afternoons. I would love to hear this remastered on CD. Does anyone know why this has never been done, or what the status of the original tapes might be? It was reissued on LP only during the early 2000s. I wonder if this is something Corbett would be able to get at.

High cost of Woody Shaw's BLACKSTONE LEGACY
colinmce replied to Big Al's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
This is indeed a professionally manufactured copy, so I'd grab one while you can. Not sure where they turned these up, for awhile this was a pricy OOP CD as well. https://www.amazon.com/Blackstone-Legacy-Woody-Shaw/dp/B00000IN45/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=woody+shaw+blackstone+legacy&qid=1668783806&s=music&sprefix=woody+shaw+black%2Cpopular%2C130&sr=1-1 -
Never thought the day would come! Can't wait.

High cost of Woody Shaw's BLACKSTONE LEGACY

FYI Amazon has the Blackstone Legacy CD in stock. I ordered one last year to replace my sold copy; I will check tonight to see if it's a CD-R, I honestly don't remember. -

This whole "spiritual" jazz fad is a plague on innumerable levels, this being just one. And if you think this is crazy check out the prices on the Herb Ellis/Remo Palmier Concord(!!) LP, apparently a youtube algorithmic sensation. -
new batch looks especially promising. & spoke too soon on the Barry Guy sets, they were in the mailbox yesterday! I'll start digging in tomorrow.

Wow, great. I ordered mine the day they were posted and there seems to be a problem in the mail. Hoping they will show up eventually.

RIP. Long been a fan of the FMP date. This amazing footage was recently uploaded to youtube:

RIP. His Revelation albums are high, high up on my list of favorite recordings. The later hatOLOGY discs are also uniformly excellent. Glad he lived a long, full life.

Mine is in!

Hard to go wrong really, but for very piano-centric albums: Young At Heart/Wise In Time (maybe the single “most” essential if you have to choose), Afrisong, Duets 1976 (Braxton), Sightsong (Malachai Favors), Spiral, Lifelong Ambitions (Leroy Jenkins), Duets & Solos (Roscoe Mitchell) The Open Air Meeting (Marty Erlich), Streaming (Lewis/Mitchell), Sounddance (Lewis/Fred Anderson).

LF - Alan Glover - Kings Of Infinite Space

You can now purchase this disc and two others, including a 3xCD set of recordings from 1979-81, at 50 Miles of Elbow Room "This three-volume set is a collection of cassette recordings of the Juice Quartet. Most of the cassettes were recorded by Bill 'Segun' Edelen using an early portable tape recorder with a built-in microphone. They have been digitally remastered for this series. Throughout these recordings, the pianist is Kasa Allah Mubarak aka Stanley Wiley. The bassist is either William Parker or Richard Williams. On most tracks, the drummer is Abu Kali. When the congas of Juma Sultan are heard, the drummer is Ali Abuwi. Only on the performance of 'Of Things Green' is the drummer Mitchell Bechet featured." -
Yes, though both LPs called Blood were released on Fontana; technically one is called In Haarlem - Blood. That one has two long tracks and has been reissued extensively and cheaply on Arista-Freedom on both CD and LP. The other one with 10 shorter tracks (which the new ezz-thetics CD draws from) is much, much harder to come by.
-
ezz-thetics has a volume of the Annette Peacock compositions from Ramblin, Blood and Mr. Joy. Makes for a great listen, but another missed opportunity to reissue the painfully rare "short" version of Blood in full.

Which Box Sets do You Regret Buying, and Why?
colinmce replied to northwood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I love the Hackett and both Teagarden sets, but I can see why that might not be everyone's cup; luckily both are on the smaller end. I did have the Johnny Mercer Select years ago, and I recall liking it. I was thinking about re-buying it recently and gave it a listen on Spotify .... absolutely dreadful. I definitely would have regretted that. -
This one made little impression on me when I owned it, so I passed it on. I'm thinking I could give it another chance.
-
For these, yes, though unlike most Corbett still does many CDs so I can't feel too put out. Also $20.99 is basically as cheap as it gets these days!
