  1. Maybe Nate Chinen feels like he has a well-developed personal taste. That's very sad for him if he thinks he does.
  2. I don't want to turn this into a counter-productive bitching session, but I just can't help myself. I hate the NYT too much. Big surprise Pi-- the one founded by Wall Street millionaires*-- gets the direct line to the paper. They wouldn't have it any other way. Do they know any other way? *nothing against them. Great label, assuming they're great guys. In short, though, Larry has it: times have changed. Organic personal taste is a dying art, no more so than in the press. It's sold in bulk lots now.
  3. FWIW I have no beef with Iyer or Coleman though I'm largely unfamiliar with both of their music. Which of the more recent Coleman records might you recommend?
  4. It wouldn't be a NYT article without mentioning Vijay Iyer and Ambrose Akinmusire. Chinen is a fucking joke. I'm taking the hard line on this one.
  5. Frankly this one looks pretty good to me as I don't have any of this except the 1958 stuff on the old split LP. As much as I love Miles my interest drops precipitously during the electric period. I have the original albums but have never gone in for the extra stuff.
  6. I bought that first Zs 10" when it came out. I'm amazed they kept it going for so long. I haven't heard anything else they've done (except piss off Weasel...)
  7. Just as a heads up, No Business has lowered the prices of their older CDs on ebay to between $13-16 with free shipping worldwide.

    Ran Blake

An album from Ran & Sara Serpa's residencies at the Kitano hotel in NYC in June 2013 & 14 has been culled by Sunnyside and will be out late May. I CANNOT WAIT! Ran & Sara is a magic combination. http://sunnysidezone.com/album/kitano-noir
  9. Indeed, thank you. Don't take no for an answer!
  10. That copy is embarrassing
  11. Really want to check out that Trzaska, but those things are just too damn expensive.
  12. Co-sign
  13. Huh, weird. I thought this was never released at the time and was only turned up as an acetate at a flea market? I guess I need to go back and re-read the CD liners.
  14. OK, thanks. Not too bad.
  15. Phenomenal one. The sound is "festival quality", which on paper does not favor Noble or Edwards, yet they adapt and make it work to their advantage.
  16. No, it wasn't part of that series.
  17. Thanks. You're very right to say good on them. Mainstream press coverage of truly independent jazz musicians is generally non-existent.
  18. How much was it total?

    Uptown

    Nice!
  20. Not at the time. It was just Dan Friel & BJ Warshaw. (also very nice dudes).
  21. Could go either way. There's Tyandai, too. I passed a fine evening with him and the band Parts & Labor after they played a show in my friend's garage...geez, 12 years ago now. A very nice & talented dude.
  22. That Marc Cary disc is wonderful.
