  1. I would call myself a fan. Corea's a musician who has studied a lot and is a very good piano player. I can't think of anyone else who has recorded in as many contexts as Corea. It's kind of hard to associate Corea's music with a specific time period, since you never know what to expect. One minute he's playing straight ahead, the next he's playing fusion, then he's playing classical music, then he do some free form avant garde thing, and also he'll do some spanish influenced stuff. If I could pick my top 5 favorite Corea recordings, it would be Light As a Feather, Three Quartets, Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy, and Akoustic Band.
  2. Am I crazy or are you a fucking asshole? No, seriously...
  3. What's another good lp store?
  4. Gretsch drums, Zildjian K cymbols.
  5. Okay, so can we name all the places to get jazz vinyl? JRS, Bleeker Bobs.. what else.
  6. This is very sad news! I've always gone to J&R and came back with good stuff. I'll have to see for myself of course. But I've been into lp's lately, so as long as The Jazz Record Store ain't shrinking, I'm fine.
  7. If I had the money, I'd buy this set right away!
  8. Back in the 50's and 60's, most drummer's drum sets were set up basically the same, with little variations. One cymbol coming out of the bass drum and one on the left. Sometimes there wasn't even a ride on the left. Some drummers preferred another cymbol on the right next to the one coming out of the bass drum. I don't know for sure, but maybe Connie Kay was one of the firsts to have a completely unique drum setup. I've seen some pictures of Bailey in Frank Wolf's books. Observing from the pictures, the sound, and the era, I'd say Bailey had a snare, tom, floor tom, 20 inch bass drum, one ride cymbol on the right, and another one of the left, and his hats. Just because his snare sounded tighter doesn't mean it's a different snare. You can just tighten the snare with a drum key. I don't know if you were saying that you thought it was different or whatever.
  9. Has anyone ever been to the Jazz Record Store in Manhattan? I think it should just be called the Jazz Store since there are so much more than records. But the records are the best part. I took a trip to the JRS yesterday. I had been there once before. Maybe a little overpriced, but well worth it. Rows and rows of great jazz lp's. If anyone's ever in NY, they should stop by. I walked out with some Modern Jazz Quartet, Jim Hall, Bobby Hutcherson, and Gerry Niewood. Next to Amoeba in Hollywood, this place is heaven! They also have just about every issue of Downbeat ever made. Anybody else ever go?
  10. I would like to hear Our Day Will Come.
  11. Maybe Blue Trane should start with Coltrane's My Favorite Things, then keep working his way down through Trane's discography after 1965, then get some Ornette, Cecil, and Shepp. I like this stuff, but I couldn't listen to it all the time. Free jazz lacks the two most important ingrediants in music... Melody and Rhythm.

    Guitar Trios

I've heard people say he's sloppy, but I don't care. I dig that tone! His solos on those Poll Winners albums are some of the most imaginative solos I've ever heard. I think he does get respect in the fact that most guitarists say he was a good guitar player, and many people know and like his music. But you're right, he does seem to be forgotten when talking about innovative guitarists of the 60's.
  13. I think Bright Size Life is a standard.
  14. Another thing as stupid as race is like Soul Stream mentioned, is location. If you're from texas, you can't play jazz or whatever. Same thing that was happening with the west coast players in the 60's. (i think) I never had this issue, or at least no one ever told me. I think it is the worst. If people would forget about this nonsense, and just shut up and play, it would be a whole lot more meaningful.
  15. Manteca.... That with A Night In Tunisia, and St. Thomas are the tunes every school band plays..
  16. I don't listen to his pre-bop recordings. I listen to is 60's pop stuff from time to time. I probaly wouldn't if those songs weren't so sentimental.

I bought a B.K. album called Soaring on Concord Jazz made in the 70's. It's pretty good, and they do one of my favorite tunes, You Go To My Head.

    Stanley Clarke

This guy has so many bull shit albums, it's hard to find good ones. But I'm sure they're out there. Haven't checked him out really though. His playing on Light As A Feather is superb!
  19. I saw this show last night. The best concert I've ever been too. He's quite an entertainer.
