  1. The Mingus collection at LC has complete scores for this; you can actually look at the finding aid online: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/service/music/eadxmlmusic/eadpdfmusic/mu004009_x.pdf A lot of what you need is in box 3, but some is in other boxes. I looked at it yesterday. If you think you have a serious project you are trying to get permission for from Sue Mingus, send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll tell you the next step. I can't predict how flexible she will be, but I know she wants the music played. Related to Minugs, I listened to this yesterday: Shelf no. RGA 0023 (RWD 5010 A1) Title Newport Jazz Festival, July 5, 1956, set 6 / Charlie Mingus Jazz Workshop Date Event : 07/05/1956 Publication Status Unpublished Type Music Medium Recording Performer(s) Willis Conover as emcee; announcements also by Louis Lorillard and Sen. (musical group) Collection Voice of America Music Library Collection (Library of Congress) Physical Item RGA 0023 (RWD 5010 A1). 1 digital sound cassette (polyester). Recording Laboratory 1995-7. Collection/Donor name: Voice of America Music Library Collection (Library of Congress) Unbelievably good music. A great unaccompanied solo by Mal on the second track. And how much Ernie Henry with Mingus is there out there? Bertrand.
  2. I'm not sure I follow - requesting permission from Sue to make copies of music from the Mingus Collection at LC is standard procedure and in no way indicative of her being difficult. Bertrand.
  3. I'll let you know if the Library of Congess has anything in their Mingus collection. You would need a permission from Sue. Bertrand.
  4. What forms of payment do you take? Bertrand.
  5. I bought a bunch of these at Daedalus for $6-$7 a few years ago. The ordering process was as follows: 1) Hop into car. 2) Put CD into CD player. 3) Drive to Daedalus. 4) Choose CDs on shelf. 5) Proceed to register and whip out credit card. 6) Repeat steps 1 and 2. Seems a bit simpler. # 5 is the hardest step. Bertrand.
  6. This is a record of one nun covering tunes by another nun??? I'm having nun of that! Bertrand.
  7. Freddie now lives in Baltimore. My friend Brad Linde had him come up for some East Coast gigs two years ago and he decided to stay, lucky for us. No major health problems to my knowledge. Not too much steady gigging yet but things are brewing. There was a gig at the Iridium the day before Thanksgiving with David Weiss, Javon Jackson and Louis Hayes. I will keep you posted. Here's the main thing to keep in mind: Freddie's playing in the last few months has been AMAZING. Every gig just keeps getting better. Bertrand.
  8. You beat me to it! In addition to Freddie and Butch, the band was Brad Linde (tenor sax and arranger), Brian Settles (tenor sax) and Tony Martucci (drums). They played 3 Butch tunes, 2 Freddie tunes and 5 standards including 'Round Midnight. A magical night, glad there are videos. I am probably walking in front of the camera a couple of times, and my 10-year old son many times! Bertrand.
  9. Amother way to get around D.C. when you don't feel like riding metro: join the capital bikeshare. Columbia Heights is a great choice and you are ridiculously close to all the jazz clubs except Blues Alley, which sucks anyway. Bertrand.
  10. Butch told me today that he did play it with Monk, just not on a record date (I'm sure he hasn't kept up with the numerous live recordings issued over the years). He mentioned playing it in Paris but I don't see that tune on the Paris CDs. We can only hope that something will surface in the near future. Bertrand.
  11. Chris Sheridan's Monk discography does not have any recording of 'Round Midnight during Butch Warren's tenure with the group. Has anything surfaced since? Bertrand.
  12. I'm here. If you lived here now, you can catch Freddie Redd and Butch Warren together on Saturday. Bertrand.
  13. There will be a private house party this Saturday 12/4 at 7:00 PM which will mark the VERY FIRST meeting of Freddie Redd and Butch Warren! It is taking place in Boyds, MD, which is in upper Montgomery County, MD (near Germantown). This is a private party with limited space but there are still some openings. If you are interested, send me a PM and I will tell you how to sign up. Bertrand.
  14. 1) If Amazon has it (most likely through Newbury comics), it will also not be a cut-out, which bothers some people (not me). Definitely a better way to go for one title. I ordered Shirley Scott's Like Cozy for $5. 2) The Bishop has become a rarity. I've picked up a couple at Daedalus this year for our local Butch Warren nuts. It's not on the website and there was only one copy on display at the Columbia store. It may well be the last one they will ever get... 3) One I didn't list: Houston Person's Legends Of Acid Jazz. Not usually a Person fan, but how is Grant Green on this one? Bertrand.
  15. Went over there today. 1) I suggested they put in a mention on the website that there is a warning for International Shipping. 2) I only saw a few that are not on the website that caught my eye (see below). If you want one of these, you can try sales at 1-800-395-2665, otherwise you can try the store: 410-309-2730 (Columbia, MD) or 410-464-2701 (Baltimore, MD). Bertrand. Walter Bishop: Trio Reverend Gary Davis: Say No To The Devil (on website, but not on my list) Red Garland: Red's Good Groove Freddie Hubbard: Keystone Bop, Volume 2 (Friday/Saturday) (on website, but not on my list) Johnny Hammond Smith: Talk That Talk Clark Terry: Serenade To A Bus Seat
  16. I will definitely mention to them that they should mention on their website that they will ask for confirmation. It's in their best interest. Don't know if you decided you'll go for it anyway, but you can assume that this hefty charge with no other options is due to either one of two possibilities: 1) Terrorism fears. 2) The U.S. Postal Service slowly going out of business for 2 reasons: the internet and gross mismanagment. Bertrand.
  17. I'm sorry that my efforts will mostly help out U.S. board members. With $5.95 for shipping, it will mostly help those who see a large number of titles they want; it seems a lot for 1 or 2 titles. I'm lucky I can just drive there. Bertrand.
  18. I'll try to remember to ask next time I go. That's kind of steep for domestic. Bertrand.
  19. Those nuns on bikes should be wearing helmets instead. Bertrand.
  20. As I mentioned on the Gryce thread, Daedalus books has a number of Fantasy cut-outs (many of which are probably OOP). There are a lot of titles that were not in other Fantasy 'dumps' (Oldies, Concord). Below is a list I put together from their website. This list focuses mostly on OJC; I did not include Pablos, Milestones or compilations, and left off more recent stuff (e.g. later Rollins). There were titles in the store that are not on their site, and there are titles on the site that I did not see in the store. Next time I am there, I will write down some of the titles that are not in the list below. Bertrand. OJC titles on the site: Ada Moore: Jazz Workshop, Vol. 3 Andy Bey And The Bey Sisters: ‘Round Midnight Arnett Cobb: Blow, Arnett, Blow Art Farmer: Farmer’s Market Art Pepper: Art Standards/Landscape/One September Afternoon/Roadgame/Today Barney Kessel: Swingin’ Party At Contemporary Barry Harris: Listen To Bill Evans: Montreux III/Interplay Sessions/New Jazz Conception/Quintessence/ Sunday At The Village Vanguard/You’re Gonna Hear From Me Billy Butler: Night Life Billy Taylor: Trio/Warming Up Blue Mitchell: Blue Soul Bobby Timmons: Soul Time Boogaloo Joe Jones: Right On Brother Booker Ervin: The Freedom Book/Groovin’ High Brother Jack McDuff: Bringin’ It Home/Prelude/Screamin’ Budd Johnson: Let’s Swing Buddy Tate: Buddy And Claude/Groovin’ With Tate Bud Powell: Bebop/Parisian Thoroughfares George Cables: By George Cannonball Adderley: African Waltz/What Is This Thing/In New York Charles Earland: Black Drops Charles Mingus: At The Bohemia/Town Hall Concert Charlie Byrd: Latin Byrd/Mr. Guitar/Byrd In The Wind Chartbusters: Mating Call Dave Brubeck: Jazz At The College Of The Pacific Dexter Gordon: The Jumpin’ Blues Dick Wellstood: Uptown And Lowdown Don Elliott: Double Trumpet Doings Don Patterson/Booker Ervin: Legends Of Acid Jazz Duane Tatro: Jazz For Moderns Duke Pearson: Dedication! 21. Yes, a lot of people have turned 'couldn't care less' into 'could care less'. Drives me nuts whenever I hear it. Whether Blakey made the mistake or not, I don't know. I know he didn't kill Bird. Bertrand.
  22. Perhaps, but it's not the promoter's responsibility to help him resolve that. Bertrand.

    Nina Simone

What Mingus said about Nina Simone. Bertrand.
  24. 1) RVG also mentions the splice in the Blue Note South Bank Show, but seems to imply that it was because Cranshaw had trouble handling the break, not that he didn't remember it. IIRC, he is trying to make the point that there was a lot of splicing in BN sessions. 2) Trumpeter Michael Ridley (Larry's brother) who used to hang with Lee told me that Jackie McLean was also slated to be on that session, so it would have been a sextet date. Barry Harris did not remember this when a friend of mine asked him. I hope I get to ask Cranshaw one day. Bertrand.
  25. There's not much left at Oldies. The Concord deal can be good as pointed out by Groucho, but apparently no one else noticed something: earlier today, some titles that have been gone for a while were listed as being available on CD again. 3 examples: Fontainebleau, Smooth As The Wind and Lem's Beat. Now I see they are MP3 only. There must have been a fluke on their site and they noticed when people started ordering. Bummer, I really wanted Smooth As The Wind. I still will find 6 titles to make an order, I'm sure. Bertrand.
