    Chubby Hayes

I was thinking Jackson as well, and Butch probably did see him on TV. Also, his father had a band so maybe that was a number they did. Can't find any obvious evidence of Jackson playing this tune, but I really don't know his discography. Bertrand.

    Chubby Hayes

In a video, Butch Warren plays a piece which he identifies after as 'Big Noise From Winnetka' and credits to a bass player named Chubby Hayes. I can't find anything on such a person, and in any case he did not write the tune. Any idea what Butch was thinking of? I'm sure he's referring to something, I just don't know what. Thanks, Bertrand.
  3. I will definitely be getting this. Too bad about the composer credits. I was hoping the Barkan recordings would start trickling out. Bertrand.
  4. The attribution of a composer credit to Hubbard for 'Giant Steps' and 'The Summer Knows' makes me suspicious of this product. Bertrand.
  5. Joe Chambers is great on this one as well. Konitz will be back in DC in October. I will post more details later. Bertrand.
  6. Antoine Sanfuentes and Natasha Lebedeva (both from NBC) and myself will be presenting Butch's Blues, a discussion on the life and music of Butch Warren (pictured to the left ), on Wednesday 3/16/11 at the University Of The District Of Columbia (UDC) (Recital Hall, Building 46-West, Van Ness/UDC metro stop). This is part of the UDC Jazz Archives' Jazzforum series. Butch will be on hand to discuss key events of his career. The presentation will include audio, video, rare photographs and a performance. Hope some of you can be there. The Jazz Alive schedule can be found here: http://www.lrdudc.wrlc.org/jazz/events.php Bertrand.
  7. There seem to have been two Monk shows in Paris in 1964: At the Alhambra (theater or club?) on 2/22/64 At the ORTF on 2/23/64 Brownie, did you attend either or both? The entire ORTF concert is on the Live In Paris Volumes 1 and 2. Butch thinks this period is his best playing with Monk, and I agree. Three tracks from the Alhmabra are on the Monk Heard 'Round The World CD on Hyena. Butch is also on the one track from Monterey on this CD, not John Ore. This is a discographical error that will not go away, but it is corrected where it counts, in Chris Sheridan's Monk book. Bertrand.
  8. The tunes are from the first two BN discs by Larry Young, plus one from Emergency. I'd like to hear someone tackle the Mother Ship and Contrasts material. Both James Carter and George Winston (!) have played tunes from Heaven On Earth. Bertrand.
  9. If Borders.com gets it, I will be able to use a coupon. I definitely will get this but shop around a bit first. I'm sure I will get it for less. This is now the 4th WR DVD to come out. I'm not sure the Hamburg is legit, but it rocks. Track listing is all wrong though. I'll try to post the correct one some day. Bertrand.
  10. I bought a lot when I was in grad school and I could find them for $3-$4. I didn't have a CD player because I didn't think I could afford the CDs back then. A lot of them broke, although the Mobley still works. I always found the beep annoying. Bertrand.
  11. Their shared audience would have least included Miles, if no one else. Bertrand.
  12. I assume the Miles is a boot. How about the Weather Report? Bertrand. Weather Report Live In Berlin 1975 According to recent press releases, producer Joachim Becker–known to Zawinul fans as the producer of most of Joe’s post-Columbia Records output–has teamed up with the MiG Music to form “Art of Groove,” a new addition to the MiG family. Among its first releases will be a Weather Report DVD/CD combo, Live In Berlin 1975. The press release describes it as, “the first part of the long-awaited Weather Report live-trilogy will be published as a DVD with bonus CD at the same time. The 40th anniversary of the founding of Weather Report is in 2011. In commemoration, the Zawinul estate and ‘Art of Groove’ are pleased to publish the original tape-recording of the super-band’s performance at the Berliner Jazztage 1975 for the first time.” I don’t know what the rest of the “long-awaited Weather Report live-trilogy” is, although before his passing Joe did tell me that he had acquired the rights to the 1984 concert video “Domino Theory,” which was originally published in Japan. Meanwhile, Live In Berlin 1975 is listed on various European sites such as Amazon UK. Looks legit, but expensive. Bertrand.
  13. It was brand new when Monk played there. I'll have to ask Butch about that. I'll post more on the CD as the release data approaches. It will be on Black And Blue records. Bertrand.
  14. Looking forward to the 'Hitler finds out Allen Lowe doctored one of his speeches' video on Youtube. Bertrand.
  15. Is the 'Maison De L'ORTF' in Paris where Butch Warren played with Monk on 2/23/64 the same venue as the one referred to as 'Maison De La Radio' where Butch Warren played on 5/22/10 (and a recording of which will be issued in April). I am wondering if the studio was always in the same location. If I understand correctly, this is also where the cover photo of Larry Young's Into Something was taken. Thanks, Bertrand.
  16. Maybe it's 'Blue Friday' rather than 'Blue Spring Shuffle'? Bertrand.
  17. Someone (I can't remember who) told me that KD's composition 'Butch's Blues' from Arrival of Kenny Dorham (Jaro 1960) is a variation on his earlier piece 'Blue Spring Shuffle' from Quiet Kenny (New Jazz 1959). The two tunes are only 2 months apart. Do you agree? If so, how are they related? It's not that clear to me, but I'm not a musician. Bertrand.
  18. So we should grab 'em fast, eh This was a Newport Jazz. Someone here mentioned it. Bertrand.
  19. Anyone else agree or disagree? The 'Smoke' solo sure sounds like Dewey to me. Don't really a good enough knowledge of Eddie Daniels. Bertrand. Which one? I can't remember. It was posted here somewhere. It wasn't one that I had on my radar screen. Bertrand.
  20. All of this news isn’t only good for fans of the music: Wolfgang’s Vault is seeing to it that artists’ royalties are paid. Having triumphed in a lawsuit brought on early in the company’s existence by a number of record labels and artist managers who questioned Wolfgang’s right to post live recordings online, the company, says Sagan, is bending over backwards to operate above board. This statement further adds to my feeling that they are innocent until proven guilty. They have no desire to get in a lawsuit. Wasn't there one Newport set that was pulled, however? What was the story there? Bertrand.
  21. They do make this statement as well: 'Download revenues are also shared with performers and publishers as appropriate'. What this actually entails is a matter of speculation. A good test case is whether or not Sue Mingus and the Miles Estate are OK with all this. I find it hard to believe they are not aware of Wolfgang's vault. For all we know, there is already litigation in process. Bertrand.
  22. I'm questioning the order of tenor soloists on the ballad medley. Specifically, I'm wondering if it's Dewey Redman on 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' and Eddie Daniels on 'My One And Only Love', rather than the other way around. The soloists are not announced; I am assuming Milkowski is going by ear. Maybe he consulted with others on this, although I doubt it. Any thoughts? Bertrand.
  23. Go to the home page, then at the bottom of the page under 'concert audio' there is a section called 'about our audio'. Click on that and you will see the following: The Concert Vault is fully licensed by BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC, and we pay these performance rights organizations every time you listen to a concert. The license fees make their way back to the performers that made the music. Download revenues are also shared with performers and publishers as appropriate. One of our top priorities will always be to make sure that the artists are compensated for their performances. Whether or not this will satisfy every performer and/or estate is another story. Bertrand.
  24. I'm assuming Sue is cool with it. They do have that dislaimer on their site. Bertrand.
  25. I didn't have a chance to buy it yet; hope you didn't download the last copy. Bertrand.
