I'm sorry but I won't be available that day. Bertrand. -
1976 was probably his last gig officially, but apparently he sat in with Blakey at the Vanguard a year or two later. Bertrand.

This one is awesome (thanks to Stefan for finding a copy of this CD for me years ago), and another equally awesome set from the night before or after is also 'out there'. The Hutcherson/Land group with Joe Chambers is amazing. Bertrand.

the songs were recorded and conducted by trumpeter and Coltrane friend Cal Massey. This actually piques my interest quite a bit. Bertrand.

Your buddy Larry Ridley is on bass. Bertrand.

That gig with Mingus at Newport needs to come out. Bertrand.

This should be a really nice gig. Bertrand.

I was assuming they are playing together as one group - that's what the listing seems to show. Just found it: NORTH BETHESDA, MD The John Scofield and Joe Lovano Quartet performs Friday, January 28, 2011, 8:00 p.m. in the Music Center at Strathmore. These two jazz legends collaborate with drummer Bill Stewart and bassist Matt Penman for an evening of forward-thinking jazz and improvisation. Yes - one group. Bill Stewart is an added treat, and Penman is no slouch. I hate that North Bethesda crap. Bertrand.

I am going to see Lovano/Scofield on 1/28 at Strathmore. I doubt they will do the Bird material. I wonder who else is in this particular group. Bertrand.
-
Yet they are putting out a 'BB live' set later. Wonder why this one was shelved? I have one set on Jazz Door. It indeed is great. Bertrand.

It looks like Columbia College in Chicago rather than Columbia U. But great that his papers are gathered in a school in any case. Studied with Ornette and Hall Overton! Bertrand.

I would like to know more about Steve Chambers, the classical composer who died in 1987 and was the brother of Joe Chambers. Joe is one of my favorite jazz composers, so I'm curious about what his brother's music is like. Is any of it easily available? Thanks, Bertrand.

I think it's Hobart Dodson on the Ammons session. Bertrand.

Well, I have both Soul Stirrin' and the 45 Session, so I just need these two. Right now, I'm hoping they will come out in one of these TOCJ reissue series and that I can get them from dabastards for $15 a pop, but we really have no idea what Toshiba will put out - after Golden Boy and Heaven On Earth, anything is possible. Thanks for the tip, though, definitely an option to consider. Bertrand.

I know we're all supposed to have gotten over Blue Note by now, but I still miss the excitement of waiting for the twice-a-year batches of reissues (usually 6 a batch). We griped about how often some titles were recyled, but there were usually a couple in each batch that I didn't have yet (and in most cases had never heard). Now I have to rely on TOCJ reissues and hope Da Bastards have them at a reasonable price. Some titles I still don't have (all are in Mosaic boxes that I missed): Donald Byrd: Chant Donald Byrd: The Creeper Bennie Green: Back On The Scene Bennie Green: Talkin’ And Walkin’ Blue Mitchell: Bring It On Home Blue Mitchell: Heads Up! Blue Mitchell: Step Lightly Horace Parlan: Headin’ South Dizzy Reece: Soundin’ Off Larry Young: Contrasts There's probably a couple of Turrentine and Hutchersons as well, but I'd have to check the discography later. Bertrand.

Saxophonist Ted Brown on the radio ... and link

Glad to see that my friend Brad Linde gets a mention. They should have mentioned Sarah Hughes as well. All talk of race stuff is pointless, however. When will this country learn? Bertrand. -
The 5 tracks below are on the Shirley Scott CD Workin'. The tune with Lockjaw is edited, BTW. There was a slightly longer version on some compilation (see Doug Payne's Scott discography). Now the 5 tracks are too short to be a full LP. So what else was on this LP? It looks like it was probably a Don Patterson/Eddie Lockjaw Davis track, so that's why it was not on the Scott CD. But why is this track not mentioned in the listing from jazzdisco.org below for PR 7456 (I know jazzdisco is not very good). Is this extra track on a different CD? Thanks, Bertrand. PR 7456 Shirley Scott/Don Patterson/Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - Stompin' Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (ts) Shirley Scott (org) Wendell Marshall (b) Arthur Edgehill (d) Ray Barretto (cga) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, April 12, 1960 2162 From This Moment On Ronnell Bright (p) Shirley Scott (org) Wally Richardson (g) Peck Morrison (b) Roy Haynes (d) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, March 24, 1961 2943 Travelin' Light 2944 You're My Everything 2945 Savoy 2947 Down By The Riverside

THE IASW Box is by far the most revelatory of the boxes for me.

Robin Kelly's bio has quite a bit of info in her which I saw by looking in google books. I'll check my copy of the book another day. She was real and was Rouse's manager for a while. She was indeed a dancer. Bertrand. A photo: Kelly pages 251 and 346.

That's a shame, especially about For Sure. Bertrand.
-
If these reissues were done correctly, For Sure should include 'Teotihuacan' which was not on the original LP. If they went above and beyond the call of duty, Woody III should include the tune 'It All Comes Back To You' which was on the Stepping Stones LP but dropped from the CD in favor of some unissued tracks. Bertrand.

I have those tapes with Tristano on Fender Rhodes. Bertrand.

Leo Parker had some DC connections, so you could try to contact the Felix Grant Jazz Archives to see if they might have some leads. Also, I know a musician who I think knew him a bit; I can try to see if he would be willing to talk about it. I'm guessing Buck Hill must have known him as well. Butch Warren probably knew him also; I will ask him. Bertrand.

Will this be on Sony? Amazon lists the following tracks: 1. Miles Runs The Voodoo Down 2. Sanctuary 3. It s About That Time/The Theme 4. Directions 5. Bitches Brew 6. It s About That Time 7. Sanctuary 8. Spanish Key 9. The Theme Since the first three are from that Newport gig without Wayne, this means tracks 4-9 are what you used to be called 'Call It Anythin''. Pete Losin gives the same track listing, so it must be correct. I'll try to watch the DVD again to make sure. Bertrand.
