Charles Tolliver Big Band - "With Love" (due Jan. 16th)
bertrand replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in New Releases
I have it from a very good source that the music is KILLER. I agree that the cover is awful - it looks like a smooth jazz album. Once again, Blue Note hits a low note. Bertrand. -
Will the new record include 'The Yodel'? Bertrand.

Is it too late to suggest to Michael Cuscuna that he could fit most of the material from Landslide onto the Clubhouse reissue? I think one track is already out there elsewhere, and the rest would fit. Then, all of DG would be in RVG status. I wish this has come to me before. If anyone can post the tracks and timings from Landslide and Clubhouse, that would be great. Bertrand.

Here's one that meets John's Ed Blackwell requirement: Dewey Redman: The Struggle Continues Why this masterpiece has yet to see the light of day on CD is a mystery. Actually, Dewey and Charles Eubanks told me Eicher was unhappy with it, partially because the piano kept going in and out of tune. Whose fault is that? Bertrand.

'Bookerishly'? I wonder if I can use that in Scrabble without being challenged. Bertrand.

Is there any reason to think the DVD will be issued separately? If not, I'll spring for this. Bertrand.

I've just been listening to a 'private recording' of a show from the Phantom Navigator tour. There is a stunning version of 'Plaza Real' that is totally different from Weather Report's. I love the way Wayne transforms his pieces until they are nearly unrecognizable (e.g. 'Orbits'). No sticking safely to the record for him. His quote about a composition never being finished makes total sense in this context. Bertrand.

Ironically, the paperback edition (due in February) of the aforementioned biography will contain an inventory of Wayne's compositions that Michelle and I put together. I make no claims that it is complete (even Wayne himself could not make a complete list) but there are many surprises. Bertrand.

I hope this book will finally solve the mystery of whether Art Blakey killed Bird or not. Bertrand.

I wish Concord would reissue the Bobby Timmons album Holiday Soul (w/ Butch Warren and Walter Perkins). I've heard very good things about it. Bertrand.
-
Work kept me from coming up, dammit. Anyone go to this? Bertrand.
-
My deepest condolences to his family. Bertrand.

I usually don't give a hoot about these lists, but someone forwarded this list to me and I thought it was different. I'll post it without comment, except to say that I own NONE of these - #1 is in my yourmusic queue, and #2 is one of those records that are so famous that I haven't bought it yet. Bertrand. 1. Ornette Coleman, The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959) 2. John Coltrane, Giant Steps (1960) 3. Albert Ayler, Spriitual Unity (1964) 4. Sun Ra, Space is the Place (1972) 5. Django Reinhart, In Solitaire (2002, recorded 1937-1950) 6. Mulatu Astatke, Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale 1969-74 (1998) 7. Masada, Live in Jerusalem (1999) 8. Chicago Underground Trio, Possible Cube (1999) 9. Marc Ribot, Saints (2001) 10. Eddie Palmieri, Salsa Legende (2003, recorded 1964-2003)

'Silent Night (or anything else for that matter)-Aaron Neville Anything by him is root canal, fingernails on the chalkboard excruciating. I can't stand that yodeling, gargling warble of his. This is Christmas music for those who deserve to be punished.' Glad to see it's not just me. He drives me nuts. I hate Mel Torme's 'Christmas Song' with a homicidal passion. Bertrand.

I'm sorry I haven't replied to your PM, things are crazy these days (I'm at work until 11 most nights). Bertrand. -

I was told it was because he had big ears (see photo above). Bertrand. -
Only got a minute. I'm 98% sure I'm going up to NYC on 12/13 to catch Grachan Moncur III at the Stone. He's got James Spaulding and Michael Blake. If it 's like the gig I saw at the Iridium in April (see post elsewhere - no time to search), it should be killer. Anyone else thinking of going? We could hook up before for dinner. Bertrand.

Anything good in NYC the week-end of 12/15?
bertrand replied to bertrand's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I've changed my plans - I'm coming up instead to see Grachan at the Stone on 12/13. I'll start another thread to see if other organissimites are going. Bertrand. -
Last I heard, still alive but not well. I'll try to find out more from a local drummer who is his nephew. Bertrand.

Live Jazz - Washington DC / Northern Virginia
bertrand replied to BeBop's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Yes, Twins is missing from your list: www.twinsjazz.com They have two locations. This week-end, it's Mulgrew Miller at the Uptown location, and Allison Miller (no relation) on U street. I'll definitely go to Mulgrew, perhaps the other as well. Buck Hill is at the Smithsonian on 12/15. I haven't been to Bohemain in ages. The old owners were jerks, but they are under new ownership. Bertrand. -
Actually, I'm really trying to solve a discographical conundrum. Hearing the actual thing can wait I think a Dewey discography is needed at jazzdiscography.com Bertrand.
-
Yeah, the oboe thing sounded just plain wrong. Do you mean he played musette on this date, or in general? Bertrand.
-
BTW, you can't trust Columbia's personnel listings. The recent reissue of Monk. does not mention that the tune 'Teo' is from a different session with Butch Warren on bass. You have to search the web to find this out. So Dewey could appear uncredited on Skies Of America. Bertrand.

I had thought until two days ago that Ornette was the only soloist on this but then the following occurred: 1) I was listening to an interview Phil Schapp did with Dewey back in 1990 and PS mentions Dewey's 'lenghty' tenor solo on this record (which he first calls American Skies until Dewey corrects him). I was puzzled about this, so I checked at jazzdisco.org 2) They have Dewey playing tenor and oboe on this (along with Haden and Blackwell). So, keeping in mind the two following facts: 1) Schapp often is clueless about what he claims to be an expert on 2) Jazzdisco.org is often totally wrong I thought the only way to pin this down is to talk to someone who has this. They have it at yourmusic, but I was only thinking of getting it if someone could confirm that Dewey is audible on this. It looks like Brownie is saying he isn't - perhaps Dewey is present but buried in the mix (like Wayne on 'Falling Water'), or perhaps Dewey is not there at all. Otherwise, I was leaning towards not getting this. Now if Rooster has an extra copy, that's a whole 'nother story! Thanks, Bertrand.

How prominent is Dewey on this record? Does he get any solo space? Bertrand.
