New ECM Book
bertrand replied to andybleaden's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Maybe they'll shed light on why the fuck Dewey Redman's The Struggle Continues is not on CD yet. Bertrand. -
With or without Fang?

I believe he's doing a concert with Mark Masters tonight. Bertrand.

I guess Bob Thiele must be the trumpeter. Bertrand.

Unlike iTunes, where a song is $.99 whether it's a minute long or an hour long, Sonny is charging based on duration! Bertrand.

Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud is being re-released
bertrand replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The Marine biologist is a classic. Bertrand.

Hank Mobley bio
bertrand replied to umum_cypher's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Could be interesting. Ian McDonald (not the King Crimson guy) has a book out on Mobley, though I have never seen it (he has one on Dameron as well). Sam Miller did his Rutgers thesis on Hank - I'm still trying to get a hold of it. Bertrand. -
Do they have the Dewey Redman tuff city date (jazz horns for DJs or something like that)? Bertrand.

From jazzdiscography.com: Date: July 5, 1968 Location: Plaza Sound Studios, New York City Label: Blue Note Jackie McLean (ldr), Jackie McLean (as), Tyrone Washington (ts), Woody Shaw (t), Bobby Hutcherson (vib), Scotty Holt (b), Norman Connors (d) a. 3054 In Case You Haven't Heard (Woody Shaw) b. 3055 Hymn To Rap (Jackie McLean) c. 3056 One For Jeru (Norman Connors) d. 3057 Kupenda e. 3058 Abrasion (Jackie McLean) All performances were rejected. We haven't been able to find a composer for 'Kupenda' yet. I'm betting it's Tyrone W. Chuck, have you actually heared this, or are you basing you reply on the interview in Cadence or Coda (can't remember which) where Jackie rags on Connors for ruining this date? Bertrand.

Charles Tolliver Big Band - "With Love" (due Jan. 16th)
bertrand replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in New Releases
I think a lot of contemporary recordings just sound dull and lifeless in general, regardless of how vibrant the performers may sound live. Are they just using too much compression? For the Tolliver CD (haven't heard it yet), I have a really stupid question: is this 'bleeding ears' effect less pronounced if you turn down the volume, or does it require the listener to turn down the volume so much that the music can't really be heard properly? Bertrand. -
Dexter Gordon & Woody Shaw Invitation, Vol. 1 and Vol 2. (Live)
bertrand replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Discography
The price is excellent and makes sense: you can buy each tune for $.99, or all seven for 7 x $.99. It should always be this way on iTunes. I do have to quibble with the sloppy song title listings, however. How is the sound (taking into account that they are downloads, of course)? Bertrand. -
'and why does the governement have the art blakey 59 tape anyway, was it for some government sponsored broadcast. i had thought it was just a private tape recorded at the fest and traded among elitist bearded jazz fans---until this is released it is my #1 beef with the US gov't.' The Library of Congress received the VOA Newport tapes a few years back which is why they have this particular set. I believe the collection has mostly been catalogued (and you can probably find it somewhere on their site). The next step is for some record label to look into putting this stuff out, which includes permissions and payment to the artists or estates. I guess they need to do some sort of market study to find out if it's worth it or not. I *think* some of the tracks from the Happy Birthday Newport 3-CD set are from this collection, but I could be wrong. Note that the Monk/Trane is from another collection - I forget which right now. The private tape of the 1959 Blakey set is no doubt from another source. You can't copy things at LoC unless you have a massive collection of permission letters and are willing to pay their copying fees (it's not DIY). Bertrand.

I'll send you a PM sometime this week. Bertrand.

If you're referring to the short-staffing at LC, the answer is obvious, but we would have to move this thread to the political forum Bertrand.

Yes, apparently there were no reservations about putting out the Monk/Trane because of the name recognition. Also, the fact that the two primary estates involved were more than happy to get this out helped a lot. There's tons of other tapes of interest in their archives, much of them still uncatalogued (more due to short-staffing than anything else). There are two Newport Blakey tapes: 1959 with Mobley and Morgan, and 1961 with Wayne and KD. I floated the idea around of making a CD of these two sets (total time about 50 minutes) but no one seems to have followed through yet. This is the only known recording of Wayne and KD. And I believe the intro to 'Night In Tunisia' from 1959 is by Mobley - not too many examples of his voice on record that I know of (the person refers to 'our fearless leader', and I don't think it's Lee's voice). Bertrand.

Don't get me started on the Culpeper thing... Bertrand.

Ron, I saw Wayne in October 2005 at the Kewsick, but a week earlier he also did a free gig in D.C. I actually got lucky in 2006 - I was flying out to LA because I was involved in the Lee Morgan tribute that Mark Masters was doing on 1/30. Through some fluke, it turned out that Wayne was playing with the L.A. Phil. on 1/28, so I flew in a day early and saw him. I'll try to make the Philly show (organissimo reunion?), but I hope I can catch Wayne before that - I can't wait a year! Bertrand.

The guys were kinda hoping you'd put some pot in the pot. Bertrand.

'I think I have told this story before. When "At the Five Spot" was issued I spoke with Ben Young (producer) and he said the choice was between it and "In Kansas City". He said "FS" won over "KC" 'cause they thought that name would sell more cds. He said it was a shame 'cause "KC" had lots of extra material to add. He gave no indication if the extras were alternates or new tunes.' Thank you for this rare insight into the complex decision making process regarding reissues at the major labels. To paraphrase John Cleese in a Python sketch about the BBC: 'I'd like to work for Verve on their jazz reissue program, but, unfortunately, I have a degree'. Bertrand.

I just called IMN world and they will change it on their website. I haven't seen Wayne in over a year (except for a brief thing at the Monk competition). I need to see him again soon. I will definitely plan on going to Philly, although buying tickets now would be premature Bertrand.

Wayne's page at imnworld.com claims he will be at the Kimmel Center on 3/28/07. But I clicked on the link, and it says Peter Nero. A google search yielded a press release for their 2007-2008 season that has Wayne playing there on 3/28/08. What's the scoop? Bertrand.

His latest droppings earn him a whopping one star in the latest downbeat. Apparently the lyrics are wretched. Bertrand.
