OK - this is getting thornier by the minute. CD Universe claims it's 64 minutes, so I don't think all the tracks on the Amazon listing are there. The tunes are available as digital downloads on iTunes. It's all the tracks Claude listed (plus two percussion solos and an interview), and the total time is about 2 hours. So, I think the DVD does not have all the performances (why not, there would be room enough!). I can get all the music from iTunes. CD Universe also shows a UK import of the CD (which I would prefer to iTunes), but it's backordered. So now I have to: 1) Hold off on the DVD, in case I can get hold of a reasonably-priced import with the whole concert. 2) Hold off on the iTunes, in case the UK CD becomes available. Bertrand. Edit: Amazon lists a 2-CD set coming 3/27/07. Again, it's all the iTunes tracks (minus the percussion solos and the interview?). So problem 2 is resolved, I just have to wait a month. Problem 1 remains - the US DVD will probably be incomplete, and I know the complete DVD has been available in Japan, but I don't want to spend a fortune. Other issue: I had been told about the DVD, but not the CD, when I prepared the appendix with Michelle Mercer for her Wayne bio (it's out now, BTW). So the appendix only lists 'Ballroom In The Sky' as being part of a DVD, not a CD - and I'm not sure if this track is one of the ones included on the DVD or not.

Upcoming Andrew Hill live album for BN
bertrand replied to Guy Berger's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Frank, Thank you very much for the update. Please give Andrew my best wishes, and I hope he knows we are all thinking about him. I agree, his courage in the face of this illness is truly inspiring. Bertrand. -
Charles Mingus Sextet, Live at Cornell U 1964
bertrand replied to Guy Berger's topic in New Releases
You have multiple versions of this band playing 'Irish Eyes' and "Jitterbug Waltz'? The 'deliberate' error is either the statement that this was recorded 20 years ago, or that the tape was just recently found. The two together don't jibe. Either they wanted to mask the fact that this concert is 40+ years old (like that would keep me from buying it) or mask the fact that Sue sat on this for 20+ years (a more likely scenario). The error in the instrumentation looks like a non-deliberate typo. What's the Mingus list? I used to be on the Miles list but got in a fight with some douche about Alan Shorter of all people. Is it more civil? Bertrand. -

If you don't like Gitler's liner notes, you should see his lyrics to Gigi Gryce's 'Boxer's Blues'. Bertrand.

Cat Stevens: A fan seeking his old haunts and any Jazz
bertrand replied to dr.33's topic in Recommendations
Since you are both into jazz and Cat Stevens, perhaps you might be able to enlighten me on the following mystery: Why does the All Music Guide web site claim that 'Lady D'Arbanville' was written by Wayne Shorter? Do they know something I don't? Thanks, Bertrand. -
Was anyone able to go to this? Bertrand.

Do you use and trust Popsike record prices?

Off-topic: are you a foot surgeon Bertrand. -
I thought Copeland's father worked for the CIA, hence the name of the band. Of course, he could have been finger-wiggling on the side... As for his comments about jazz, just a reminder: before the Police reunion, he was drumming with the Doors reunion. A gig John Densmore did not want to have a part of! Bertrand.

It semi-cool, because chewy brought up a good point: he may be due some royalties from BN. It so happens I have to give Blue Note a new contact for Butch Warren, so I could throw this in as well. 2 questions: 1) Is this the right guy? 2) Who at Blue Note should I contact? Tom Evered is no longer in charge of jazz, and I never heard of the new guy. If no one else has any ideas, I'll contact Michael Cuscuna. Bertrand.

I believe there's a tune on there called 'Chuck N.'s in love'. Bertrand.

I noticed that in the section in your book in which Mabern is talking about The Gigolo, he confirms (in a sort of back-handed way) that Wayne Shorter contributed a composition to this record. He obviously is not aware (nor should he be) that 'Trapped' was incorrectly attributed to Lee. Bertrand.

Another thought: musicians nowadays sometimes do their own recordings, and pitch them to a label later. Was this common practice in the sixties? Wasn't this how Woody Shaw's Cassandranite got recorded? Bertrand.
