Thanks guys (et merci beaucoup). I was feeling down in the last few weeks, and this sure cheers me up! I took the day off today (and tomorrow, since the Gipper gave me Friday off), but I haven't listened to anything yet. In fact, I may just go back to bed! Bertrand.

Mal Waldron DVDs
bertrand replied to bertrand's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Thanks guys. Impossible, Does your DVD have the same four tracks: The Git-Go; All ALone; Fire Waltz; Left Alone? Is Left Alone a solo track? The Woody Shaw discography points out how it is not clear if this concert is from the same date as the two CDs that came out, since the tunes are for the most part different. So, I'm wondering if the two DVDs might have different tunes, or if the more expensive one has more tracks etc. etc. Thanks, Bertrand. -
Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper"

At the Iridium, during 'Dance Little Mandissa', Jackie Mac picked up a cowbell during Rene's solo. It was hard, but I was able to resist calling out 'Jackie, I want more cowbell'! Bertrand. -
There seem to be two versions of the Mal Waldron DVD Live at the Vanguard available. One is twice the price of the other. What's the difference? - Different track listings? - Regions (I want to get one that plays on U.S. players, obviously)? - Availability (the cheaper one is on back-order at CD Universe)? - Quality (the cheaper one has a yucky cover, so maybe the picture is less good too)? Thanks! Bertrand.

Antiquity is a great record - it's definitely different, so it might not be to everyone's tast, but it is not a dud. Steve Slagle told me it's one of his top ten records of all time. Bertrand.

I heard Snoop is getting divorced. His marriage fizzled. He's in a tizzle.

Happy birthday Stefan! Bertrand.

Bitches' Brew is just a rip-off of Larry Young's Mother Ship anyway. Bertrand.

Hans, Thanks for the heads up! I think I will pre-order these. I was very happy with the three I got in April (I passed on Takes Off, which is not a very good record - maybe later in life). I'm surprised they left out the studio single from that period from Volunteers 'Mexico/Have You Seen The Saucers'. On the plus side, there is a live 'Won't You Try' - my son will be happy; it's his favorite song! I wonder if it's the Woodstock version. Bertrand.

'Stranded In A Limousine' was already issued as a bonus cut on a best of album along with another piece whose title escapes me and which is not listed above. Why do press releases always screw up these things? Bertrand.

I'll second the Jackie McLean and Co. - I love the first three tracks with the tuba, they have a mysterious, eerie sound that reminds me of a spy movie soundtrack. Larry Young also liked this record - he covered 'Flickers' (mistitled as 'Minor Dream') on Young Blues, and 'Help!' on Jimmy Forrest's Forrest Fire. I also like Strange Blues a lot. All of his 9 albums as a leader on Prestige are, at the minimum, very good. Bertrand.

Guess who I sat next to at the Jackie McLean show
bertrand replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Too tired to give a lengthy report - I'll check in on Monday. The two sets Thursday were absolutely awesome - it was a magical night. Grachan did not play on all tunes (as I suspected), and was late for the first set (which seemed to bug Jackie a bit). He readily admits that he's still working on his chops, but what I really dug was I could still recognize his tone - had I closed my eys, I would have still known it was GM3 and no one else. 'Love And Hate' was beautiful. Hutcherson, as stated above, was astounding. The second night was somewhat more subdued (Jackie looked a bit tired), but it was still excellent. They played one of my favorite pieces by Rene, 'Naima's Tone Poem'. Hardbop and Guy, sorry I missed you guys - I was right at the front. Indeed, the following music industry bigwigs were in attandance: Michael Cuscuna Bruce Lundvall (second set only) Tom Evered Don Sickler Richard Seidel Steve Davis (trombone) GM3 was even telling Lundvall about his new trio (organ and drums)! Hardbopjazz, They announced at the beginning of each set that pictures should not be taken without the permission of Jackie and the club. I think it might be a legal issue. So, as much as I enjoy seeing these memetos of a great two days, it probably would be a good idea to remove the photos - we don't want to get b3-er in trouble. Bertrand. -
I remember reading that Khan was deceased and had been for a while. I don't remember where, and it's irrevelant anyway, based on what happened to Henry Grimes. Nasar Abadey, a drummer in DC, is related to Frank Dunlop (nephew?), and a year or two ago, told me that Frank was still iving but quite ill and unable to play. I will ask Nasar again next time I see him. Bertrand.

On my way to see Jackie McLean and the guys.
bertrand replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I'll be at both shows on Thursday (who knows when I'll get to see Jackie again - he only plays in NYC and Hartford). I'm 6'2 with a reddish beard and glasses. I'm also going on Friday. What can I say, I'm a Jackie nut. I have a unique opportunity to crash for free in my father's hotel (he's up there for a week for a physics conference), so I decided to go for it. As for the chops issue: I saw Jackie in 2000 at the all-star gig with Hutcherson, Hill and Higgins (the 3 h's). Jackie's playing was superb. I know he's been ill in the last couple of years, but my gut feeling is that if he knew he wasn't up to it, he would not show. Moncur is another story - I only expect he will play on one or two pieces, not the whole set. I know to be prepared. Through another site than that of the Iridium, I found out who the rest of the band was: Rene McLean (multi-reed), Alan Palmer (p), Nat Reeves (B) and Eric McPherson (d). Bertrand. -

Thanks. I actually was especially interested in Charles Davis' contribution. I saw him a few weeks ago and realized that I only have a couple of things he's on: 2 Kenny Dorham records, the Walton/Mobley Cobblestone date from 1972, Hubbard's The Body And The Soul (3 tracks) and Art Blakey's ultra-rare Golden Boy. I guess I was mostly wondering if the CD was fairly routine hard-bop, or more exciting than that. My guess is that Freddie alone makes it worth it. I always like Ronnie's playing - don't know much about Roland Alexander, though. Bertrand.

Happy birthday! Bertrand.

How is the Ronnie Mathews/Freddie Hubbard/Roland Alexander reissue on Fantasy? Are both LPs complete? Thanks, Bertrand.

According to a blurb in today's Washington Post Express, Snoop Doggy Dogg is trying to put together a Miles biopic in which he would play the title role. He plans to learn to play the trumpet for this role. Bertrand.
