Dewey Redman told me once when I saw him play at One Step Down that he thought Anita Baker would make a great jazz singer. I had to admit I didn't know that much of her music, but this is the kind of thing I would take Dewey's word on. Bertrand.

Now I know where Dubya got his degree. Bertrand.

His brother John Jr. died in a car accident many years ago. Bertrand.

I will definitely see this band as well if the opportunity arises; it's just that Dewey made Ballad Of The Fallen really special for me. As he once said himself in an interview, he was at his peak in the early 80s. I saw the LMO twice. Once was 1985 in Vitrolles, France. The concert was delayed quite a bit because apparently Haden was ill, but the show did take place. The Carla Bley Orchestra half of Ballad Of The Fallen was not there, but Pepper, Redman and McIntyre were. They really played only a few ensemble passages, but most of the night was one long solo after another. Dewey took an absolutely amazing 20-minute solo that was the highlight of the show. I saw them again at the Duke Ellington school in D.C. in the early 90s. This was a better show - the arrangements were much tighter. Dewey was not there, however. Bertrand.

Definitely not Batman 5. I saw the first just for Jack Nicholson, but then I took my niece to see the one with Jim Carrey and it was awful! Bertrand.

Please let us know if Dewey Redman is in the band. Thanks, Bertrand.

She is adorable indeed. You and your wife are blessed. Bertrand.

Further research seemed to indicate that 'It's Too Bad' was not with Larry Young - it says somewhere on the Hendrix site who it is. Don't know about 'World Traveler'. The presence of Larry on the third track seems to be uncontested - it sure sounds like him. Bertrand.

'We Shall Overcome' is not actually 30+ minutes long on the Montreal CD - it's a typo on the back of the CD. They still stretch it out too long, though. Bertrand.

Ducats? Did you used to live in NYC and go by the internet moniker 'hardbop' The price of a movie ticket is a round 9-10 bucks, which is about how much a Blue Note reissue costs when Borders or Tower have a sale. Guess which one I will choose to spend the money on... Bertrand.

For what its' worth (not all that much), the entry on Wayne at jazzdisco.org shows the following: V.S.O.P. Freddie Hubbard (tp) Wayne Shorter (ss, ts) Herbie Hancock (p) Ron Carter (b) Tony Williams (d) 'Live Under the Sky', Tokyo, Japan, July 26, 1979 One of Another Kind CBS/Sony [J] 40AP 1037/38 Teardrop - Pee Wee - Para Oriente - Fragile - Domo - Stella by Starlight / On Green Dolphin Street - * Live Under the Sky / V.S.O.P. (CBS/Sony [J] 40AP 1037/38) V.S.O.P. same personnel 'Live Under the Sky', Tokyo, Japan, July 29, 1979 Skagly CBS/Sony [J] 40AP 1036 Finger Painting - Mutants on the Beach - Circe - * Five Stars / V.S.O.P. (CBS/Sony [J] 40AP 1036) I was really hoping that the US CD would include the four tracks from 7/29 - I'm really pissed off; this is one of the few Wayne sessions I'm missing. 'Circe' is supposed to be 'Atlantis'. I'm not sure about the alternate titles that C.J. gives for 'Para Oriente' - I knew this tune first as 'Angel Street'. Bertrand.

Sidewinder, I don't think the two vocal tracks are essential, but I still want to have them when these two titles finally appear on CD. If Blue Note were to, say, combine the two LPs on one CD and leave the vocals out for space limitations, I would be royally pissed! Bertrand.
-
Disagree - everything on Contrasts and Heaven And Earth is essential stuff, except the two vocal tracks. Bertrand.

You know I was kidding, right? Bertrand.

Especially because it is rumored he will playing the b-3 exclusively tonight! Bertrand.

I tend to avoid the 'Wingy Corner' and the 'What Jazz Album is Aric Listening to Whilst Pleasuring Himself Today Korner'. Bertrand. -
The tune 'No Smokin' from this session is rumored to be by Bud Powell. It does appear on a Powell bootleg. Does anyone know anything more about this? Bertrand.

Claude, Street Of Dreams is missing from your list. Bertrand.

What's the recording date on this session? Thanks, Bertrand.

RDK, There are a couple of improvised pieces on the Black Lion sessions which are labelled as compositions: 'Chordially' and one or two others (titles escape me at the moment). Whether or not these can be called Monk's last compositions touches on the whole debate of composition vs. improvisation. Bertrand.

Brownie, Actually, 'Goldie' was originally recorded on Wynton Kelly's Kelly Great LP (August 1959) under the title 'What Know'. Bertrand.

Peter Watrous - there's a name I haven't heard in a while, and I'm none the worse for it. Bertrand. -
A friend of mine is doing a recital in November of Horace Silver compositions. I am in the process of digging up all the copyright deposits (tons of 'em, all in Horace's hand-writing), but these are lead sheets. We were also hoping to find arrangements. There are two books out there available for purchase, one from Hal Leonard and one from Jamey Aebersold. Does any one know which pieces are contained therein? Thanks, Bertrand.
-
Thanks, Dan. So, this is essentially the Horace Silver quintet with Hugh Lawson and Bohannon in addition (what does he play?). The two 'Soulin' tunes must be the same since Joe is credited in both cases (I don't have Prairie Dog either). The only remaining mystery is why Roy copyrighted it as his own tune, even though Joe was given credit on the LP. Bertrand.

Man, I bought this two years ago with the Border's 50% coupon (< $5) and have yet to listen to it! How pathetic of me - looks like a nice set. Bertrand.
