Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!

If it is findable in the US, LMK. I preordered from Deep Discount, no news. Can some of our British friends get copies for us in the US? -
Shearing and the Adderley Bros. Newport 1957
bertrand replied to Larry Kart's topic in Recommendations
A review was found. It was Jordan at Newport. Wayne replaced Hank in May 1957, date unclear and was gone in late June. They did a week in Toronto in mid-June. Louis Hayes via Jeremy Pelt confirmed Toronto and said Wayne did a couple of other dates. A possible DC date is being investigated... -
One of my favorite Jazz records of all time. I befriended Mark and I worked with him on a Lee Morgan project in 2004.

Interesting theory about Feldman... -

Update: I found a flyer on the internet that lists Wayne with Horace at Newport in 1957. Two options: 1) Wayne did not make the gig and Clifford subbed. 2) Library of Congress is wrong. Wayne played a week in Toronto with Horace in 1957, it's in Mark Miller's Sonny Greenwich book. Louis Hayes was on the Newport gig. Who can ask him? -

When I buy from iTunes, I save it on my hard drive. Did they pull it from people's hard drives? Is it possible that they had reached a reasonable agreement with Sony, possibly including compensation, but that Sony changed their minds when they saw the buzz this was generating? -
Sun Ra in the NYRB

'Let me tell you a story about a boy' as an opener does not bode well for the rest of the article. -
Brown Sugar should be banned from the airwaves.

I am waiting for a very interesting article on Archie Shepp. Might be the next issue. -
Just the Monk in Palo Alto tunes.

I am open to any option, but what out there is of comparable quality? I am sure there is something, but it might not be cheap. Yes, I would want FM radio. We still have a jazz station in DC, and my wife listens to FM as well. We are old.

When I buy from iTunes, I save it on my hard drive. Did they pull it from people's hard drives? Was Feldman involved in this? They were looking for the janitor on Facebook but even if they found him or his estate, I doubt he could prevent the release. The Columbia theory makes more sense. But it could be TS Monk getting cold feet. Remember the Monk competition? -
The discography does not necessarily list usable out-takes. I am pretty sure most of the ones listed above were not in there. I will check this evening if someone does not beat me to it. In other words, the only way we could know is if someone decided to listen to Mother Ship again to specifically look for other material. Exactly how the bonus tracks above came to light is a mystery.

And then they will complain when people share files with friends. They are asking for it.

A capacitor failing in the left channel sounds totally plausible. I do have the name of one repair guy, but I will see if there are others. So here is where I am dumb: I have a receiver, but no separate amp. Is it just built into the receiver? Is an amp optional?

Update - my wife got it working. Something was greyed out but then she googled and found that it worked by hitting something else. No idea what the solution was because I was not allowed to be involved, of course. So what does this mean? It means that this statement that is all over the web is horseshit: The iPod Classic is no longer supported by the software, period. Backwards compatibility is not considered and old versions of iTunes are not provided by Apple. In fact, the support personnel are forbidden to provide an older version. They suggest buying a new iPod. She was able to load a classic with a new version of iTunes, or at least we think it is a classic because it is quite old. I am also screwed because I was ready to have an excuse to get a 256 gig I really mostly use the iPod when I go visit my family in France. That ain't happening anytime soon. For the same reason, I only drive short trips now so the music on my phone is enough (I could listen to On The Nile all day). I probably will not reload my iPod until the next trip, but if I do I will have to clear some music out which is pain and messes up my playlists. I have 128 gigs in my iTunes right now, about 15 too many. Totally a first world problem, I know, and I can afford a 256 gig, it just seems like a waste. Maybe between now and my next trip, they will have come to their senses and made a terabyte touch. The 256 is really a surprise, I thought they were phasing out iPods. Maybe popular demand? I did notice the 256 has a bunch of crap I will never use, Alexa and photos and shit. I can still put about 230-240 gigs on music and only music on it, right? There is no space reserved exclusively for the other crap? I know there are always 15-20 gigs reserved for system stuff, although one employee said it was not system stuff. What the hell else could it be?

That sounds plausible, but if that would be needed, then maybe it is time for a new amplifier. Oxydation = getting old, it's why I eat a lot of blueberries Is it true I cannot find anything as good as a pioneer SX-650 or is it just a question of putting in the money? PS: I forgot you used to be Duke Pearson fan. I am spending a lot of time thinking about him, I even made a Facebook group. There will be a livestream on 8/21 of a trio playing his music from a venue in the DC area, although I assume anyone in the world can watch. I may do a zoom lecture in conjunction, TBD.

1) Do you still use iTunes with it? 2) Will it recognize the special iTunes format (I think it is .mp4) that was created when I loaded all my CDs. Yes, Apple sucks, except the playlists in iTunes are very useful. I would like to keep using that.

I have had issues off and on for a while with the stereo in the living room. It comes and goes and I listen much more to the Denon mini-system in the rec room where I am 90% of the time (and where my collection is), so I have been lazy about getting this resolved but it is time, especially now that I am in my house 99% of the time. All the pieces of my stereo are old, so the thought of replacing makes sense, except that I have been given the 'they don't make 'em like they used to' warning from several people, so I want to be cautious. The issue is that the speaker on the left side will get a spitting scratching sound, basically it sounds like the music is having trouble coming through. I brought up the other speakers, which had issues which my brother-in-law fixed for me. The problem is still there on the left, so I guess it rules out the speakers. I switched the wires to see if it was that, but the problem is still on the left, not moved to the right. I could get new wires anyway to test, but I am wondering if I need a new receiver. So we have a Pioneer SX-650. It was given to us 20+ years ago but was great for a long time. It is probably from the 80s? So in terms of lifespan, it could be a goner, but I have been told there is nothing that good anymore. I had to get it fixed 10+ years ago, and it worked fine for a long time after that. I am wondering it is really the receiver so don't want to rush to replace it. Also, what would I replace it with? Is there anything of comparable quality? As you can tell, I am clueless about these things, or more precisely debugging them. I am not opposed to getting an entirely new system, but want to try to debug first. Any thoughts are appreciated. Bertrand.

256 gigs makes more sense then KB but now I am pissed for another reason - when I bought my new model 2 years ago, they said 128 gigs was the max and I am pretty sure I had looked it up. Is the 256 gig a new thing? What is Catolina? A new Mac? I have always been on PCs, no particular reason. I am used to Windows. Never had to deal with Vista though. Yes, something else than an iPod is an option but my wife has to buy into the idea. She is busy. But if I understand correctly, if she has iTunes 12.10.6.2 on a Windows 10 PC, she should be able to load onto any iPod, even a classic? So why is she having issues? Now I am tempted to get a 256 gig. It will definitely work with iTunes 12.10.7.3? I don't trust these guys.
