  1. That sounds plausible, but if that would be needed, then maybe it is time for a new amplifier. Oxydation = getting old, it's why I eat a lot of blueberries Is it true I cannot find anything as good as a pioneer SX-650 or is it just a question of putting in the money? PS: I forgot you used to be Duke Pearson fan. I am spending a lot of time thinking about him, I even made a Facebook group. There will be a livestream on 8/21 of a trio playing his music from a venue in the DC area, although I assume anyone in the world can watch. I may do a zoom lecture in conjunction, TBD.
  2. 1) Do you still use iTunes with it? 2) Will it recognize the special iTunes format (I think it is .mp4) that was created when I loaded all my CDs. Yes, Apple sucks, except the playlists in iTunes are very useful. I would like to keep using that.
  3. I have had issues off and on for a while with the stereo in the living room. It comes and goes and I listen much more to the Denon mini-system in the rec room where I am 90% of the time (and where my collection is), so I have been lazy about getting this resolved but it is time, especially now that I am in my house 99% of the time. All the pieces of my stereo are old, so the thought of replacing makes sense, except that I have been given the 'they don't make 'em like they used to' warning from several people, so I want to be cautious. The issue is that the speaker on the left side will get a spitting scratching sound, basically it sounds like the music is having trouble coming through. I brought up the other speakers, which had issues which my brother-in-law fixed for me. The problem is still there on the left, so I guess it rules out the speakers. I switched the wires to see if it was that, but the problem is still on the left, not moved to the right. I could get new wires anyway to test, but I am wondering if I need a new receiver. So we have a Pioneer SX-650. It was given to us 20+ years ago but was great for a long time. It is probably from the 80s? So in terms of lifespan, it could be a goner, but I have been told there is nothing that good anymore. I had to get it fixed 10+ years ago, and it worked fine for a long time after that. I am wondering it is really the receiver so don't want to rush to replace it. Also, what would I replace it with? Is there anything of comparable quality? As you can tell, I am clueless about these things, or more precisely debugging them. I am not opposed to getting an entirely new system, but want to try to debug first. Any thoughts are appreciated. Bertrand.
  4. 256 gigs makes more sense then KB but now I am pissed for another reason - when I bought my new model 2 years ago, they said 128 gigs was the max and I am pretty sure I had looked it up. Is the 256 gig a new thing? What is Catolina? A new Mac? I have always been on PCs, no particular reason. I am used to Windows. Never had to deal with Vista though. Yes, something else than an iPod is an option but my wife has to buy into the idea. She is busy. But if I understand correctly, if she has iTunes 12.10.6.2 on a Windows 10 PC, she should be able to load onto any iPod, even a classic? So why is she having issues? Now I am tempted to get a 256 gig. It will definitely work with iTunes 12.10.7.3? I don't trust these guys.
  5. There's a new Blue Train with yet another new alternate??? Too bad they didn't do Heavy Dipper at the session as planned, that would be worth buying it again. So there is probably more than enough for 2 CDs. Again, if Blue Note puts this together, I'm buying.
  6. Was the Mobley track in the Mosaic box?
  7. This is an apple product that stores 256KB?
  8. I know people have had compatibility problems with iPods and iTunes, including some on this board. My wife has with her new computer, and I have not with a computer that's 2.5 years old. I am trying to figure out the options. You will see this statement on the web: The iPod Classic is no longer supported by the software, period. Backwards compatibility is not considered and old versions of iTunes are not provided by Apple. In fact, the support personnel are forbidden to provide an older version. They suggest buying a new iPod. My computer has iTunes version 12.10.7.3. I have 3 iPods: 1) One that I believe is compatible with my PC. I think I actually bought it a few months after I bought my computer. I believe it is the latest one can buy, 120 gigs. I have not tried to load it as a test since I started hearing about this issue because I would have to take music off my iTunes, I have almost 130 gigs right now. I have not had time to delete anything. 2) A nano which I have not loaded in a long time. 3) A 160-gig (is that the classic?). I have not loaded it in a long time because it was having issues charging and I think it is now dead, although there is one last thing I want to try when I can go back to a store. My guess is 2) and 3) will not work with 12.10.7.3. I am not sure this is the version I first got with the new computer or if it quietly upgraded itself while I was sleeping. My wife has iTunes 12.10.6.2. Not sure why it is older than mine. This is a new computer. I believe her iPod is a classic hence the issue. So for her, if she bought the most current iPod on the market, she should be OK, right? What is the model she should get? This would solve my immediate issue. Not a fan of playing into Apple's BS but she is busy, she just needs something that works. No time for games. Plus she loses 40 gigs. For the future: 1) Some guys out there have rigged old iPods to hold a terabyte. Probably too expensive for me, but would these even be compatible with 12.10.7.3 or 12.10.6.2? 2) What else than iPods are out there that will still work with iTunes? I don't want to give up the option of making playlists. 3) Is downloading an earlier iTunes version an option? What version works with classics? I will google around. Or does that option not work with Windows 10? 4) I have an older PC that still works with an older iTunes. Maybe that could work for my wife if we can get her music on there. A cumbersome approach.
  9. Thanks Lon, I updated the list. Is that it, there were no others. Do you know the timings? Those are the three I don't have.
  10. It is possible that Benny forgot about the one time Hank subbed for him. The 1973 interview is so odd in many ways. Hank brings up very specific facts such as this one and the whole Algerian war film, but there is no way to substantiate any of it. He specifically says he played with Tadd in Atlantic City. It's possible he got mixed up with another gig he was called to sub on, but would he have even known about the residency in Atlantic City without having been there, at least in the audience. Very mysterious?
  11. Yes. They have never been issued in the US. Over the years, the Japanese put out LPs and CDs with alternates from various sessions, before it became the custom to tack them onto the session where they belonged. This special Unity was part of a batch that came out for the 75th anniversary. There are also precious out-takes of Speak No Evil, Out To Lunch, Free For All, Blue John etc. The US needs to put out a 2-CD set with all of these since they dropped the ball in 2014. I would get this since I missed a few (Mode For Joe, Cannonball, Lou Donaldson maybe). Can we make a list of all the alternates that popped up for this series? I will start. Let's include timings to see how many CDs are needed. Unity If 1 6:28 If 2 5:43 The Moontane 6:40 Beyond All Limits 6:04 Speak No Evil Witch Hunt 6:55 Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum 6:00 (an alternate of Dance Cadaverous was released in the US) Out To Lunch Hat And Beard 8:37 Something Sweet, Something Tender 5:44 Free For All Free For All 8:27 Blue John Jean de Fleur 9:07 Chunky Cheeks 5:45 I Need You So 4:49 KInda Slick 5:05 Untitled Patton Tune 8:33 Mode For Joe Mode For Joe 9:29 Somethin' Else Autumn Leaves timing? Here 'tis Blues #4 timing?
  12. Is there a recording of Zappa/Shepp/Moncur?
  13. Not sure that would work either. Even if It's not a jewelcase, there should be some little spindle thingy to hold the CD so it can be plucked off without having to put your fingers on it.
  14. If also do that for a lot of new releases packaged in this flimsy way. I bought a bunch of mini paper sleeves at Micro Center, kinda look like LP sleeves from the days of yore.
  15. Hmmm. So Alfred went as far as picking master takes, apparently. Why would he have done that if he hated the session? Foolin' is a typo. The copyright deposit says Coolin', and that's what Hank called it when he recorded it as a leader.
  16. I guess I am still confused. The takes that were chosen were from the Blue Note vaults, it is only the alternates that were considered but not used that were from Alfred's tapes, or even the issued takes were from Alfred's tapes? Alfred had never gotten as far as deciding which ones he considered to be Master Takes, correct? He just shoved the session aside as fast as he could?
  17. Regarding the composer of Jimerick: in addition to the fact that it kinda sounds like a Lee tune, albeit one that was just put together in the studio at the 11th hour (were they low on material?), I thought of another possible clue: the title may be a nod to Lee's siblings JIMmy, ERnestine and (Otto) RICardo. Not implausible, but maybe not enough to start sending royalties to the proper parties, which as of this writing, is his wife Kiko (they never formally divorced). Bertrand.
  18. I am thinking of getting them, I passed on them before but Gale's passing has made me rethink that.

    Archie Shepp

Montreux Two has a Moncur piece that was never recorded elsewhere that I have always been curious about.
  20. So it is not theoretically impossible that Larry Young took a copy of Mother Ship home?
  21. Thank you both!
  22. Did the two Eddie Gale Blue Note records have extra tracks when they came out on CD (licensed to Water, IIRC) or were they equivalent to the LPs?
  23. I knew that was going to happen. Which Grant Green date? And is the Ike Quebec the one with Butch Warren?
  24. This is incorrect. Ortega was the leader. No Lucky on this. Lord needs to correct it.
