  1. I bought Battle Stations and Zoot Sims And The Gershwin Brothers today. I've been wanting to explore "Jaws" and Zoot, and these sounded excellent from the samples I've heard. I'm expecting that these will help put my vacation into full swing!
  2. I've always enjoyed Karl Malden. Apart from the films already mentioned, I like his performances in I Confess, Birdman of Alcatraz, The Cincinnati Kid, Nevada Smith and Patton. R.I.P.
  3. Whitman Mayo always cracks me up. One of my favorite roles that he played other than Grady was Mr. Rhythm in D.C. Cab: "Mr Rhythm says don't let your *&^% run your life." Truer words . . . .
  4. I'm very sorry to hear about your loss, VB. Take care and hang in there.
  5. A couple of days ago I bought a new copy of Stitt's Givin' Away The Store from my local, independent music store and ordered more Stitt - Stitt Meets Brother Jack - and an Ammons - Funky.
  6. Yesterday morning during the drive to work, 91.1 (the jazz station here in the Toronto area) played "Blues For Pres, Sweets, Ben & All The Other Funky Ones" from Sonny Stitt's Sits In With The Oscar Peterson Trio. Let's just say it left such an impression on me that the first thing I listened to today was the whole album!
  7. Paul Chambers - Paul Chambers Quintet Horace Parlan - Up & Down
  8. Anything from Ronco or this huckster would fit the bill IMHO.
  9. I've had my copy for about three years. It plays O.K,. but the discs are mislabeled (disc one is really disc two). I know someone on another forum who bought a copy of it within the last year, and his was the same as mine. It seems they just can't get this one right.
  10. I like his early acoustic albums. Along with Salt, Sun And Time mentioned by Paps, three others in this vein are High Winds White Sky, Sunwheel Dance and Bruce Cockburn.
  11. I'm sorry to hear about your dog, Paps. I've only lost one, but it's tough. Hang in there, and give yourself a pat on the back for looking after him - and others like him.
  12. Moanin' is one of my favorites, and I play it often. The Art Blakey Jazz Icons DVD is also worth owing if you're a fan of this line-up.
  13. I think Open House/Plain Talk may be the only album where Jackie McLean plays with an organist.
  14. I bought RVG remasters of three albums I haven't heard before - Bluesy Burrell, Hank Mobley Quintet and Soul Junction.
  15. Thanks for putting this list together!
  16. I also like the version of "Mirrors" on Hutcherson's The Kicker.
