On the one hand, it's nice that albums like "Blue Soul" and "Adderley in NY" are finally getting some kind of sonic upgrade. On the other hand...... what, isn't this the 2nd or 3rd sonic upgrade for the other three? I know for a fact that the Evans and the Bags/Wes discs have been released as K2's and Hybrid SACD's. But I guess it's like John L said, it's worth it to have OK's "insightful comments" about the sessions.

Drat! I'll bet that first half of disc two triggered it all!

Is that his first Muse date? I didn't know that! If so, you nailed it, description and everything! Oddly enough, I just received Montara from BMG this week. If it's anything like the Barron date, as you say, then I can't wait to dig into it! Are you gonna comment on the rest of the tracks? I hope so!
-
Why, yes it was recorded at RVG; I just checked this CD for that info for the very first time! Guess I don't know that VG sound as well as I thought I did. I fully agree with you about Earl Klugh making a record like this, as well as the way the beauty of this song grabs you right from the start. It had the same effect on me first time I heard it. The rest of this album is as much a treat as this track, but this one REALLY stands out! The irony here is that on your BFT #4, on the Horace Silver track, I correctly guessed Ron Carter as the bassist. Now it's come full circle: you correctly guessing Ron Carter as the bassist on my BFT! I don't know about you, but during the climax of the piece, Carter plays that little octave drop that is instantly recognizable as something he'd play. And no one else can play it like him, AFAIC! Yup, that's the one! Abso-freakin-lutely! The rest of this album is the same way. This album had all the potential to be something schmaltzy, and it's not like the leader's other A&M dates were all the substantial (pardon me for not liking anyone covering Simon & Garfunkel. Too much nothing there to be any of something). Something about this album sets it apart from the others, and just because I can't identify it or describe it doesn't mean it don't exist. Kinda like my argument for God. Arlington Public Library's having their spring sale in a couple months! Y'never know! I'm honored by the compliment!

Nice to know I'm not the only one who feels this tune more than what's on the surface. I got this album (CD) as a birthday present some years back, and instantly fell in love with this song. IMO, there are few albums in any genre that start off as nice as this! Ever imagined what that opening scene might look like if someone had scored it with this? I have, many times! Me three!!! I fully agree that this ain't Chet at his strongest, but that frailty serves this song well, IMO. Isn't anyone gonna comment about the lovely piano playing, especially the solo? Drat! Not that I really thought I could fool you, but..... drat!!! Gotta split it up again, too many quote blocks, not enough posts!
-
Nope! Nope, not a Vanguard date! Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for those. I'm going thru a pretty serious JH jones right now!
-
Hell yeah! HELL FREAKIN' YEAH!!!!! I dig the way Roy comes shoutin' in for his brief chorus and Papa Jo doesn't just accentuate that entrance, he slaps the shit outta it!!! Anyone else diggin' the guitar player here? One moment soundin' like Freddie Green, then slipping into a Wes bag for hizzown solo? Too young to be that Auld. (couldn't resist) Are YOU in for a surprise! You got THAT right! Much as I love this album, it took a loooooooong time for the sound of the bass on this album to grow on me. NOW I understand! Y'know, I never really looked at it from that angle, but then after reading this and thinking about the various Evans songs I really enjoy (and there's a good many of them), I start to remember the use of those left-hand chords and realize I love his playing as much for his left hand as his right hand! I'm pretty sure Larry Kart couldn't've said it better! Thank YOU! Your commentary was extraordinary, as usual. Nice to know you nailed the Silver tune! I was kinda hoping you would!

Nope, it's not a clarinet. In fact, it's the only appearance of a reed on this album, all the more shameful because as you can tell, there's no solo. Never understood why..... That's cool. I put this track on here just to gauge reactions; my first reaction when I heard this album was one of comfort, and it sounded like the musicians fed off that feeling of comfort. But given how many times I've seen this in the used bins, I guess I'm in the minority on this one. OH well..... Somebody say AMEN and HALLELUJAH!!!! Actually, I found this at an Arlington Public Library book sale, walked outta there with an armload of records for about six bucks! This was one of them (and another record from that sale makes an appearance on disc two). When I first saw it, I thought it was the record you sampled for YOUR BFT #4 waybackwhen! Obviously it wasn't, but oh whatta find it was! I totally agree with you that Mosaic needs to get on the ball with this project! You're freakin' welcome!!! Yup, that's the one! I'm only allowed so many quote blocks, so I gotta split this up. Oh well, more padding of the post count!

I got mine on Saturday, which was two days after the deal was done! Yet another endorsement for the Aggie fan! :tup

Agggghhhh - Of course it is ! And it was staring at me from the shelf ! I hate it when that happens!

Well, you've always been a good improviser on the tenor sax, and your guesses follow suit! Yup! Right tenor, wrong album. 'taint Drakes on the trumpet, neither. Man, the way you were describing it, I thought you were about to hit the nail on the head! This whole album is "in another class altogether." Right about everything except the studio. Depends on who the boss is, probably! Especially when you find out who the arranger is and who the leader is. Correctamundo on Woods & Cleveland, not tellin' who the tenor is, but I've never seen him talked about. RIGHT on, brother! Testify!!! All right all 'round! This is the track I use whenever someone says that Miller couldn't swing. Bullshit he couldn't, despite the fact that 99 times out of 100 he chose not to. Actually, I thought your biggest objection would've been on the choice of drummer for this date. Like I said in my last BFT (400 years ago), this drummer is my favorite small-band drummer, and doesn't look I'm gonna change anyone's mind about that! Yup! All around yup! Yup all around a-GIN!!! May have to find that Dorham Showboat. What label? This post about made my day until I read your commentary on the rest of the disc! All of y'all are making good guesses, and I'm having a blast reading them!

trying to find out i stumbled across this odd article (peculiarly self-centered but then it is 11 pages on KD) http://ecommons.txstate.edu/cgi/viewconten...mp;context=jtmh Dave Oliphant. Kenny Dorham & Leo Wright: Texas Bebop Messengers to the World, Journal of Texas Music History 2001 footnote 21: someone with a credit card should get the book for 55 cent: http://www.amazon.com/Born-Under-Sign-Jazz...1449&sr=8-1 (don't think all editions have the cd but this one apparently has) YES!!! I've been looking for the answer to this question for years! Pity this song never got the recognition it deserved. I wonder why he didn't record it for his own vocal album. Did KD compose other songs with lyrics?

Smith yes, Getz no. Gotcha again! Yes, it's definitely from that! Yes, it definitely is not the familiar take. Oh, you KNOW it! The way the pianist and drummer spar off during the piano solo is fiery, then the alto & trumpet come in to finish it off with unbelievable fireworks. I agree, I wish these two had recorded together more often. Crud! Thought I could slip the Fat man by y'all! DAMN!!! Right on both counts! Wow! That was beautiful. Really! I couldn't have said it any better. The rest of this album isn't as melancholy, and in fact took me awhile to get used to. But I've always loved this track. Listening to it makes me feel very wistful, and listening to the fade-out feels like leaving a wonderful dream about a past happiness and fading back into reality. I'll go into even more detail about this song come answer-time, but for now, I'll PM the answer to ya.

I got everything I ordered in my shipment, which arrived yesterday! -
Heh heh! It's neither the tenor nor the arranger (hey, whattya makin' fun of my favorite arranger? Why you brassafrackarackshlacka@^#@^%#%^#!!^!!!!! ). I can't answer the second question for fear of giving it away. Someone oughta figure out soon enough, though! Be more specfic! You know it! The first time I heard this song, I was working on a Saturday and got so hooked on it, I hit the 'repeat' button and listened nonstop for at least an hour! He is? (goes over to jazzdisco.org to check it out) Well, whattya know, so he is! I overlooked that little tidbit! You'd think I would've noticed that in putting this together. Any idea when KD wrote this? I've never found where he recorded this tune. But yeah, Chet makes this his own. Right song, wrong performers. This may have been pretty evil of me! It ain't Harrell, but if you think Harrell sounds like the trumpeter here, please give me some recs on some good Harrell albums! It's not film music, but I could see where it could be mistaken for it. DING! DING! DING!!! Correctamundo again! So far so good! Can't wait to read the rest of your guesses!
-
Nope, not a needle-drop, although speaking of that, what did you think (sonically) of the actual needle-drops, tracks 9 & 11?
-
It ain't Harper, but if you know of any recordings of his that sound like this track, please let me know!
-
As the great Kay Kyser would say, "That's right, you're WRONG!" I was SO hoping someone would guess Terry Gibbs on this track; it's the whole reason this track is on here!
-
You got THAT right! It is a gem!
-
Thanks! Glad you like it! Nice to know someone else would've guessed KD/Afro Cuban. As I said before, it is Blakey on the skins. Dude, you are so close it's not funny! Your description of the tenor player is pretty apt. You're wrong about everything else, though. This album cannot be praised enough! I'd be interested to hear what you & Spoontooneous think of the recording (i.e. engineering, stereo-spread, miking, etc) of this tune. Not even close. EDIT: My bad, it is Cleveland. Everything else is wrong though. Fletcher Henderson? Wow! You guys are gonna be in for a helluva surprise when this one's revealed! DING! DING! DING! (with a swing!) We have a winner on all counts! Great guess! Y'know, I never knew Golson was so recognizable. I always confuse him with Johnny Griffin. Great guess! Wrong about the trumpet, though. Yes, yes, yes, and hell yes, before you can't find it anymore! Great guesses all around! I'm having as much fun reading y'alls guesses as I hope y'all are listening to the music!
-
And a damn good one, too! This album doesn't get near the credit I think it should. I'm glad you liked it! You're right about Silver, but wrong about which track he's on. Everything else is wrong, though. As a bass player, however, I have to admit that playing along with track 11 is all kinds of fun! Easily my favorite album of his! I didn't think I'd fool anyone with this one, but it swings and that's all that matters to me! Nope, not Ammons! I was listening to that this morning and thought the same thing about the tenor solo. I mean, he sounds like he's bending over to play his solo from the chart that some careless klutz knocked to the floor. Interesting you would, er, "pick up" on the bass and then guess OP. It's not OP, but it's got someone closely associated with him. Great guesses! Sounds like you had a good time with this one! I hope you enjoy disc two just as much!
-
Yes, it is Blakey on the skins. FWIW, if I didn't already know the answer, I would've also guessed KD from Afro-Cuban. Nope, none of those. Yes, it's Hodges, but I'm not saying the piano player. Yet! Nope, none of those either. I will say that the rest of this album is just as good as this one track, and trying to narrow it down was not an easy task! Boy, are you in for a surprise, as will a lot people (I hope!). I was hoping this argument could start again! Same argument we had on my last BFT. Totally agree about this being an old favorite, and even though this album had recently been sampled on a previous BFT (which I didn't realize until AFTER I'd sent mine out), I still wanted to include it. Correctamundo on Golson & Blakey. Yes on Watkins! The ensemble sound is what sold me on getting it onto the BFT. I'm glad you're enjoying this, so far. It was just what I was hoping for!

Don't mind me, I'm just trying to pad my post count!
