Aug. & Sep. 2007 - US Blue Note RVG CD Reissues

How did I miss this in the original post? Add another to my shopping list! -
Yes, thanks. Did you catch the rookie Ellsbury on the dash from second base on the wild pitch? Rangers had a wild pitch? I simply DON'T believe it! Yeah, but how often do you see someone score from second? Oops, missed that part. I didn't see the game last night, only the result. Wow, scoring from second like that; kid must be Road-Runner or something!

Don't know, but for the first time in a long time, I'm looking forward to September 11! Al,specifics of this box will be made known the end of this month. Cool! Thanks!

Feel a little better now, Dan?

With all the brouhaha about the tapes being locked away at Iron Mountain, does anyone know how this affects the planned boxes of the rest of Coltrane's Prestige material?
-
Thanks for all the hard work, Jim. Especially since you've got a full enough plate to begin with!

Sidewinder nailed it on the head; I love this Select. However, if you're on the fence about this, check out this episode of Night Lights, which spotlights this Select. It convinced me to buy the set!

Thankfully, we don't play the Yankees again for a long time!

PLEASE tell me that's a typo! -
Totally agree, even if I don't personally enjoy EVERYTHING he's put out during this streak. How he's able to keep up with each muse is beyond my comprehension (which isn't saying much, but still......)

My thoughts in parentheses: Walter Davis, Jr. – Davis Cup (FINALLY! I'll be able to ditch my CDR) Lee Morgan – Vol. 2 (now my Mogie pseudo-Mosaic will be complete! Hooray!) Kenny Dorham – Afro Cuban (FINALLY! Been waiting a looooong time for this one!) Thad Jones - The Magnificent Thad Jones (YES! Another Thad Jones!) Grant Green – The Latin Bit (why? I see this one so much at used-CD stores! Who's gonna buy this?) Lee Morgan – Candy (probably ditch my JRVG so I can get the bonus track) Jimmy Smith – Midnight Special (IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME!!!!) Jimmy Smith – Back At The Chicken Shack (IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME!!!!) If I'm looking at this correctly, every Lee Morgan album from the 50's will now be available in the RVG format. Good for us who missed that one, bad for those who paid a pretty penny to get an OOP box. -
I'm bumping this thread because I have been in full-on EC obsessive-compulsion. Last weekend, I acquired (*or re-acquired in a couple of cases) the following Rhino 2-fers: Imperial Bedroom* (should never have gotten rid of this one) Trust* (ditto) Armed Forces (what took me so freakin' long to get this? This is INCREDIBLE! The second disc is on a par with the first!) King of America (took me a little longer. Still haven't warmed up to much of the 2nd disc, and for a long time I didn't really like KoA. Every time one of the songs starts, I expect to hear someone say "Funding for this and other NPR programs provided by.....") This past week, I checked out the following Rhinos from a couple of local libraries: My Aim is True (the sound on this blows away the Ryko, which already sounded good to begin with! The 2nd disc is nice as well!) This Year's Model (the 2nd disc on this is probably my least favorite; just seems like it could've had a lot more) Needless to say, I will be acquiring these for my own pronto! Then yesterday, from the Fort Worth library, I checked out the following: My Flame Burns Blue (probably need to listen to this again; made no impact on me whatsoever) The Delivery Man (wow, what a furious record! EC at his most visceral! I love it!) When I Was Cruel (another howling EC record, but it sure could've used some editing) The River in Reverse (what the hell was I thinking ignoring this record last year? On a par with the magnificent Painted from Memory) Finally, today, this mega-music/games/video store opened, was having its grand opening sale, and I picked up the following at ridiculously low prices: The River in Reverse (with bonus DVD! Can't wait to watch this one) Brutal Youth (Rhino, never heard this one, but at $7.00, what is there to lose) Mighty Like a Rose (Rhino, never heard this one, but always liked "The Other Side of Summer." I stayed away from this because a lot of people said it was worse than Spike, and I hated Spike. Still do, in fact: I passed up the Rhino 2-fer for $7.00! Been listening to this one, and so far it lives up to EC's claim of "If you're looking for an angry record, you've come to the right place." And, I like it a lot more than Spike, but then I like root canal surgery more than I like Spike.) All of this is showing me that EC's post-Columbia work is a lot more interesting than I originally imagined. And so the journey begins yet again!

Ah, pipe down; you still got one game left to salvage. Now, if we win that one, I may have a coronary. But, you know, it's always been like this: no matter how bad the Rangers are, they somehow miraculously beat the teams they're supposed to lose to! Not consistently, mind you; but enough to make it maddening that they can't do this more often!

I like this set a lot. The bits where Monk lays out and lets Rouse solo over just bass-n-drums are flat-out amazing; how he keeps coming up with fresh ideas with each chorus in EACH SONG still makes me shake my head in wonder. I just wish there was a way to see Monk dancing while Charlie is playing. Having said that, I could do without a bass solo and a drum solo in EVERY SONG! More often than not, they kill the momentum, making this something of a tiring listening experience. I'm assuming not all of these bass & drum solos were on the vinyl?

You've never been a Rangers fan, have you?

I am the oldest of two, and my younger sister and I can very easily prove THAT guy wrong!

That was the first Trane record I ever heard. It alternately seduced me and scared the hell outta me. Took me years to recover and finally appreciate its majesty!
-
It's almost disco, but in a good way. Nice simple greasy grooves, and a version of "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" that is damn-near definitive. Plus it's got Joe Farrell on flute. The only reason I'm not getting it is because my vinyl sounds good enough, and the clip of Benson "singing" "Hold On I'm Comin'" is scary.

It's 1987, and I'm going thru my dad's record collection looking for some classic rock and found his copy of Blakey's MOSAIC. Put the record on, and that first thunderous explosion of drums on the title track hooked me for life.

Hey, that's great!!!! Thanks! Now that I've had time to take it all in, I can tell you that amidst all the anticipation, all of the past (behavior problems, steroid accusations, etc) seem to disappear in the electric atmosphere that surrounded every one of Sosa's at-bats. My son and I, our seats were down the first base line, but we had wandered over to the Kids Park out in the CF bleachers; when Sosa came to bat, he and I parked ourselves in a spot where we could see the field. Every pitch that went to Sosa was accompanied by a sea of flickering camera flashes, which looked VERY cool to this little-kid-in-an-old-man's-body. Naturally, we all went bananas when the HR was actually hit and the two curtain calls were very cool. (My 20-year-old daughter had gone with a friend, and they were sitting 27 rows behind home-plate for the game. I will envy her for the rest of my life!) (I should add here that we had tickets to this game long before we found out this might be the game that Sammy notched #600. We're also Cubs fans, so to see our two favorite teams on the same field guaranteed that the team we like would win!) And yes, Sammy's quest for Reggie's K record also notched another last night as well. We were driving home listening to the press conference, and I wish I hadn't. Sammy was grateful, but it sounded forced, and every now and then he would talk about "his legacy" and how "people will remember me" and stuff like that. What a turnoff. Still, being able to share that baseball moment with my family (my wife and my folks were with us as well) is something I'll treasure for the rest of my life.

I may pick up FIRST LIGHT and SKY DIVE since the current CD incarnations of them sound dreadful to these ears. Maybe. I mean, it's not like you can't track down decent vinyl copies of these albums for a couple bucks....
