  1. Or, alternatively, could I just buy a tape deck with input/output jacks, and run my turntable thru that, which would then serve as the "receiver?"
  2. Addendum to the original post: Any of y'all who've met Slide (aka Greg) will know what I mean when I say, what a great cat Greg is! And what a beautiful player, too! Actually, the whole band was nice (Shelly Carroll was there! SHELLY CARROLL!!!), and I told Greg how much I liked their version of David Zoller's "Harvey." What a sweet-sounding piece, the way the muted trumpets and the two flutes colored the alto sax solo made me feel like I'd met my wife for the first time again, that first flowering of love! So they played their first set, and I was reminded of Jack Tracy's liner noted to Terry Gibbs' Dream Band Volume 5, wherein he said something like "you haven't lived until you've put your head in the mouth of a lion of a big band roar" (reeeeeeeally paraphrasing here!). Well, I got my first taste of it that night! Then they took a quick break and I introduced myself to Greg, who in turn introduced me to his lovely (and funny!) wife. If Paul Desmond were a woman, she'd be Greg's wife! But he wasn't, and she isn't, and there you are. But she is still lovely, and I get the feeling she keeps Greg on his toes on cloud nine! Then the second set started and they brought out a singer whose name escapes me, but he was introduced as a combination of Billy Eckstine and Joe Williams, and that wasn't far off. Clearly, this man enjoys singing, and that feeling was extremely contagious! And then during one song, Greg got to take a solo. I wish they could've moved the mike back to where he was, acoustics being somewhat challenged at this venue, but what I could hear was very lovely indeed! A wonderful night indeed, but I'd like to see Greg in a small-group venue sometime! I bet it'd be as much fun as a Quartet Out gig (another thing I need to get my lazy cheap ass to sometime this summer).
  3. Up, because I just bought a beee-yoo-tiful turntable from Slide_Advantage_Redoux (aka Greg), but I got no receiver or pre-amp to hook it to my computer. Yet! So, if I'm reading this thread (and a PM from Skid I got earlier), I need to get some kind of receiver to run the turntable through, and then get the Inport program that Chuck was talking about. If so, since I want to get that Inport program, any suggestions for a cheap preamp/receiver that I can run through Inport? Thanks!

    Les Spann

Thanks for sharing those stories, fasstrack! : Thanks for the recs, guys! Wonder what the following are like: Curtis Fuller The Magnificent Trombone Epic Red Garland Solar Jazzland Nat Adderley That's Right! Riverside I think the Garland and the Adderley are still in print (as is Gemini, clips of which I listened to today, and it was very nice!), but is that Fuller still in print?
  5. I'm just waiting for Cuban to come back with: Your star shouldn't keep resorting to jumpers that never fall!
  6. At least someone said it. Needs to be said more often.

    Les Spann

In the Julius Watkins thread, fasstrack mentioned he knew Les Spann. Spann is one of my favorite guitarists, and I wish he'd recorded more often! Here's a list of what I have that Spann is on: BEN WEBSTER AND ASSOCIATES BACK TO BACK - Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges JOHNNY HODGES MOSAIC (the sessions for SIDE BY SIDE and A SMOOTH ONE) Any other recommendations? Any stories, fasstrack?
  8. Just stumbled over a CD I bought the same summer as the other three in my first post: Artie Shaw - BEGIN THE BEGUINE (Bluebird) Liner notes by Chris Albertson, which I guess this also means that of the few jazz writings in my collection, I've had Albertson's the longest!
  9. My sentiments exactly.
  10. Wow, thanks Lon! Did you have that saved somewhere on your computer, or is there someplace I could've looked myself? In either case, I'm grateful you took the time to do that!
  11. Jim, I hope you print that out and frame it for Brenda! Heck, I may just use that for my next anniversary, that was freakin' BEAUTIFUL!
  12. Anyone have the discography on the Jacquet?
  13. Saw it over the weekend. It's pretty good, maybe not worth shelling out $8 to see on the big screen, but definitely worth renting on DVD. Spacey as Luthor was inspired. Made me forget all about Gene Hackman, not an easy thing to do! Trivia time: The kid that played Lois/Superman's son is a distant relative, found out from my mother-in-law. It's almost a Spaceballs moment: "I am your father's father's half-sister's daughter's husband!*" "So, what does that make us?" "Nothing!" (*what does that make us, anyhow? Third cousins? Twice removed??????)
  14. Nah, you weren't a blowhard, I know. Just a couple guys talkin' trash is all!
  15. Mine's 10, and I still do that at night!
  16. Eh, that's cool. I was just reacting to you saying that Dallas was a crybaby team and a dirty team. I don't think they are any more or any less of a dirty team than anyone else in the league. And again, I believe that in the end, the only real crying and whining came more from the media, the fans (me included), and ESPECIALLY Cuban. Not nearly so much the players. That said, there was this interesting item in today's paper:
  17. Man, that had to hurt: being up 7-0 going into the bottom of the 8th and then losing that way..... OUCH!
  18. Congratulations, Chuck and Ann! Wow, 43 years.... you two have been married longer for than I've been alive!!! SWEEEEEET!!!!
  19. If she can't, there are plenty of ready-made "pumps" walking the floor available.....
  20. Egad! Rangers swept by the Giants, and currently in the middle of a five-game losing streak! Looks like the June swoon has begun its annual descent! And just when I was getting over the Mavs losing!
  21. Aw man..... :( My prayers are with him & his family.
  22. Whatta show it was, too! And what a treat it was to meet Greg! I'm gonna post more tomorrow cuz I'm pretty beat, but suffice to say it was a very nice show and I'm looking forward to attending more DJO concerts!
  23. Ouch. I kinda hope the K2 also has the mono master, at least if the Riverside Records Story box is any indication. This compilation has both versions of "Ruby My Dear:" the Trane version is mono and sounds warm and inviting; the Hawk version is stereo and is harsh and brittle (and like Chuck says, can't hardly hear the bass). I think I may just seek out the K2's after all.
  24. Hellloooo........ anyone?
  25. Is the K2 of Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane also from the mono masters, like Monk's Music?
