Yes I do Ah, the Big Daddy! My dad used to race against him when he was a professional drag-racer in the 60's & 70's. I think I even met him once when I was a kid. Boy, those were the days, before corporate sponsorship drove out all the ones who raced simply for love of racing. I've got a lot of fond memories of traveling to places like Bowling Green, KY; Baton Rouge, LA (got the worlds WORST sunburn there. My dad used to tell me we we're going to Baton Rouge to watch the tornados go by, which scared me to death!); Ontario, CA; and of course, Green Valley Raceway here in Fort Worth! I've never been to Pomona, but I'll bet Dad knows it like the back of his hand! Dad's now got a dragster and he occasionally hits the Old-Timers circuit. I guarantee you he is never happier than when he's sitting behind the wheel of an alcohol-injected monster tearing up the quarter-mile at about 200 mph. Pro Comp all the way, baby!!!

Is the running order of tracks 1-7 on the McMaster version, which is the one I've got, the same as the original LP? MG I believe so.

WOW!!! I GUESSED ONE CORRECTLY!!! AFTER 39-1/2 BFT'S, I FINALLY NAILED ONE THAT I ONLY GUESSED AT!!! THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE!!! WOO HOO!!! That's it! I'm taking the rest of the day off!!! Congratulations, Al, but I also have to tell you that the "Wayne Shorter" connection was entirely in your head. There, that ought to deflate you a bit. Ha! I don't need your deflating! I'm a Rangers fan, remember? Glasgow? MG Texas!

I'm thinking of getting the remaster just to have the running-order of the LP; I'm always reprogramming my old Addey disc.

Track 1: GRRRRRRREAT way to fire off a BFT! No clue as to the sax players, but my first thought it was from the Very Saxy sessions with Cobb, Jaws, Hawk, Tate, & Ms. Scott. But it ain’t. Love that rhythm guitar, though. Is this from one of those Freddie Green-led Prestige sessions? Track 2: Another great groove!!! Trumpet player sounds a little like Nick Payton, maybe something from some very funky Christian McBride disc. Ah that tenor sound; I should know this! Eddie Harris? This sounds like his kinda groove! Track 3: This has Texas shuffle written all over it; somebody keep me from stompin’ all over the office!!! Maybe some Budd Johnson. Actually, this has the feel of another Argo date, just by the sound of the trumpet, which I can’t identify. Track 4: Sax sounds like Wayne Shorter. Maybe this is from his recent studio offering? But that also sounds like an electric bass, so maybe this is some Milestone Sonny Rollins track. Has that kind of a mid-60’s Miles-modal feel to it. Good swinger, nonetheless! Track 5: Heh! Speaking of Wayne and Miles-modal stuff, here’s “Footprints!” Like how I made that connection? Heh! Anyway, this band sounds completely unfamiliar to me, but they’ve apparently done their homework in trying to emulate that era of Miles. Track 6: Now here’s “Moanin’”, after I thought I’d heard it on disc one. Sounds almost like Rabbit and Duke playing this! How cool would THAT be? Ending dragged out a little longer than I would’ve liked, but I don’t remember the last time an alto solo that long held my attention for the entire solo! Track 7: Some kinda sweet slow blues here. Bet this would sound good at about 12:30 am out on a lonely road somewhere. No clue as to the players, though. Maybe one of JOS’s final recordings? No, wait; I bet that’s Mel Rhyne on the organ. Wish I knew who the guitar players were. Hey, where did that big band come from? Oh, I bet this is Wild Bill Davis! Hell, like I have a clue here! Track 8: Another lovely alto. Maybe this one really is Rabbit, only with Strayhorn at the piano. Nope; fidelity suggests something more recent. Maybe Wes Anderson? Track 9: Sounds like Philly Joe on the drums, but the ensemble suggests some kind of ODJB-type arrangement. Or, Wynton trying to convince us of his New Orleans heritage. No, I take that all back: for one thing, Wynton would never use any kind of guitar, even if it was just for rhythm, which we have here. Gotta say how much I like that there’s no gap between songs. It’s like listening to commercial-free radio. Track 10: Willie Cook? Or someone who does a damn good job impersonating him? Track 11: More Duke-influenced playing. Heck, for that matter, this track sounds like it could be the Maestro with his orchestra at some outdoor gig! Track 12: Vocals, DKDC HAFC™. Track 13: Sounds like “Keep That Groove Goin’!” Heck, that even sounds like Plas Johnson. Nice tenor battle to end the disc the way it started: GROOOOOVIN’!!! Gotta say, Dan, you outdid youself with this collection. I daresay this is your best BFT yet, which is saying something cuz yours are consistently enjoyable!

With the exception of Off to the Races, which I already have in the Mosaic, I’m gonna be getting every title in this batch. If I didn’t have the Mosaic, then I really would be getting every title. Man, this has been a helluva year for RVG’s!

I kid you not about this: last night, after watching the Rangers take a 4-0 lead on the A’s, I shut the TV off for the night. Didn’t watch or listen to any more of the game before hittin’ the hay. Proceeded to have a dream that the Rangers blew the lead and lost 7-6. Which is exactly what happened. I swear I am not making this up. Probably means nothing more other than perhaps I’m too used to this crap.

Eh, it was a slow day.....

Up for the evening crowd and other insomniacs. For the latter group, these two records will cure you of that.

Did they change to article up? I don't see a mention of Tommy John surgery.... No; it just sounds like that's where this guy is headed.

The usual cluelessness: Track 1: Sounds like “The Beat Goes On.” LOVE that bass line! The very definition of groooooooooovy! Track 2: This sounds like it’s some late 60’s Prestige side. Ammons on alto? Or maybe Sonny Criss? Just as groovy as track 1, that’s fer sure! Can I get an “Amen” around here? Track 3: Red Rhodes? This reminds me of the Big Three Trio. Man, I never should’ve traded THAT one away! Track 4: For some strange reason, I keep waiting for Nat Cole to start singing “Straighten Up and Fly Right.” More pedal steel! I love pedal steel! Buddy Eammons perhaps? Track 5: Is this from Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross sing Ellington? Track 6: Definitely Milt Jackson, maybe MJQ. Completely swingin’! Track 7: Couple o’ trombones preachin’. Another groovy cut! Kai & JJ, maybe? Track 8: Vibes & ‘bone. Sounds like Al Grey & Bobby Hutcherson on some Argo disc I wish I had. Sounds like the same kinda groove established on Snap your Fingers. Track 9: Piano sounds like Gene Harris, so I guess this is the 3 Sounds. They gotta be on this collection somewhere, so I’m throwing my chips this way. Track 10: “In a Mellow Tone” to be sure. Now to narrow it down out of the 2,000 or so tenor saxists who ever recorded this tune. Oh heck, I’ll just guess Dexter Gordon. It just has that long tall tone that I often associate with Dex. Maybe a Savoy date? Sounds like Max Roach at the drums. Don’t recognize the piano player. Maybe early Horace Silver? Which means that maybe this is Hank Mobley instead of Dex. I dunno. Track 11: Now that sounds like Freddie Hubbard. Pretty recent, if the fidelity is any indication. Sounds like the chord sequence for “Moanin’” as well. No clue on the tenor player or the piano player. Track 12: No clue whatsoever. Not much interest, either. Sorry. Track 13: Man, this one drags even slower than the last one, sorry to say. I guess I’m just having trouble adjusting after an abundance of swingers! Track 14: “Fly Me to the Moon,” Alice. Although this could qualify more as floating. Is this Ben Webster? Ah, I like the way they swing it into double-time after that little vamp. Track 15: “Blue and Sentimental.” Even sounds like Ike Quebec, even though it’s not the original Blue Note version. Still nice, though. Like the horn backgrounds. Track 16: Alright, this is the Three Sounds as well. Hey, I’m not taking any chances! Did they ever do “One O’Clock Jump?” Track 17: “Almost Like Falling in Love.” Early Stan Getz maybe? Track 18: Vince Guaraldi with Bola Sete? Or VG with Eddie Duran? If this is from Latin Side of VG and I’m not recognizing it, I may kick myself. Y’know, you’d think after 39 of these, I’d be doing a little better with the guesses.

Ouch! Nothing like Tommy John surgery to kill a promising career. Poor guy!

AFRO-CLASSIC - Hubert Laws BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS - Paul Desmond Got 'em cheap, didn't like 'em, selling 'em cheap. $7.50 each covers postage, $10.00 for both also covers postage. They're in decent condition. LPs themselves have the usual surface noise, but look clean. Covers are pretty worn, especially on the Laws. PayPal gladly accepted, as well as useful tips on shipping LPs, since I've never done this before.

Did you hear that the Sox kicked the tires on Wells but when they saw his medical records, they put the kaibosh on it. They were afraid he'd have circulation issues in cold weather. Guess those circulation issues cropped up a little earlier. Typical Texas attitude - grab a pitcher and pray. Hadn’t heard about that, but I believe it. You’re right, though, about the Rangers trading attitude: grab someone so it looks like we’re actually doing something and MAYBE have a clue about it. I guess the spirit of John Hart lives on.

Thanks. I appreciate that.

The Rangers annual second-half free-fall has resumed. Kip Wells is injured again, the depleted bullpen can't keep a lead (assuming we even get a lead). Same shit, new year.

That picture makes me wanna hurl, for SO many reasons.... Like others here have said, she used to be so pretty. Such a shame that's in the past.

Granted the thread is only two years old, it's been over four years since I've been able to listen to vinyl, so......

I've waited four years and 307 pages to finally post in this thread! Mr. Wilson and Mr. Gershwin - Teddy Wilson (CL 1318) Ahhhhh, it's good to have a rekkid-player again!!!
