  1. Let's see: Rolling Stones Beggars Banquet, The Who Tommy, a couple of Takoma John Fahey records, Art Blakey's Mosaic and Ugetsu, Wayne Shorter's Schizophrenia, and the realization that Chuck Berry is the real king of rock & roll. All courtesy of my father!
  2. {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} Can't believe I was so far off on the piano player!!! I know an embrocation that's efficacious in every case. Don't overdo it!
  3. Important stuff, Dan? I hope last night's offensive explosion by the Rangers is a sign of things to come, and not the usual occasional outburst before lapsing into another weeklong run-drought.
  4. ooooooooohhhhhhhh........... easy, stomach.............
  5. Sure you were, Big Al, Sure you were! Ever notice that Al makes these claims only AFTER a set has been sold?
  6. That parody is so on the mark, for a while there I really thought I was reading another Crouch piece.
  7. Huh? I just got caught up on that thread and didn't see anything posted by Crouch that would indicate that.
  8. I like a slice of lime in my bier!
  9. Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Just once I'd like to be around when a thread like this pops up! I was gonna jump on that so fast!!! DAMMIT!!!!
  10. I looked, I looked again, I thought about it, I thought about it some more, and... I bought nothing. I know, that's crazy talk, but I just didn't see anything I had to have, and there's no way I could come up with 30 titles that I thought I'd ever get around to listening to- not even at $2.98. I think the compulsive years (which were SERIOUS while they lasted, believe me) are in the past for me. I think I may even be content. But I envy a lot of you guys who are grabbing stacks of good stuff for peanuts. Great sale. Glad I'm not the only one who didn't feel the need to take a plunge. I may still get the K2's of "Monk's Music" and "Monk/Coltrane" so I can get them in mono, since the current issue is in stereo. Outside of that, though, nothing that I absolutely have to have!
  11. How is it that everybody loves Raymond but everybody hates Chris? Now THAT seems backwards! Chris is a hip young dude, Raymond is a whiny punk.
  12. Here's to the greeeeeeaziest of them all! Spinning some Holy Trinity of Greeeeaze right now! Sure miss ya, man!
  13. WHY did you have to start this thread, montg? WHY did Jack and Harold and Chuck have to give this such glowing reviews? WHY don't I ever resist temptation to read threads like this? WHY do I go over to the Verve web page, and WHY do I listen to clips from this set? Check back in a few weeks or so to hear me whine about WHY do I resist the temptation to buy this box?
  14. True. When it works, which is quite often, it's a wonder to behold. When it doesn't, and ESPECIALLY when it's within the same song, the effect is rather off-putting. Listening to it right now, and really, it doesn't happen too often--at least, not enough to keep you from upgrading.
  15. {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} {{{kick}}} Can't believe I was so far off on the piano player!!!
  16. Track 1: Ah, a nice Blue Note groove! Sounds like a Jackie Mac quartet date with Walter Davis Jr. at the piano. Sounds like Louis Hayes at the drums, which means this could very well be a Cannonball date. If so, maybe that’s Bobby Timmons at the piano? Can’t wait to find out, though! Track 2: Arrrgggh!!!! This is some Horace Silver group, and I’m gonna kick myself for not identifying this! I thought I had this CD, but I checked every one of my CDs with Horace on it, and I can’t find this song. NO wait, that’s Hank! Very definitely Hank! But when did the two of them record after the 50’s? Cuz this is definitely from the 60’s. GRRRRRR!!!!! I HATE when this happens!!!! SOMEBODY please post the answer to this one. HURRY!!! Track 3: Drat, I hate not being able to identify Monk tunes by name. Sounds like recent vintage, which means it isn’t Monk himself. Hey, is this from that Walter Davis album that also has “Green Chimneys” on it? Eh, I don’t know. Maybe it’s Charlie Rouse doing a tribute to his old boss. I s’pose this could be anyone. Track 4: Ack! Another tune I should know! I love the interplay between the clarinet & the piano. “Street of Dreams?” Gad, this is embarrassing! Track 5: Is that an electric piano I hear? Wish I could get some quiet around here so I could hear this stuff better! By gum, it sure is! If CTI were still in business, I’d say it was of that caliber. No clue as to any of the players, but the drummer sure sounds like DeJohnette. Track 6: Well, this sounds like it could be the exact same group as that on track 5. Heck, it almost sounds like the exact same song! Track 7: WTF????? NEXT!!!! Track 8: VERRRY cool groove! Almost reminds me of Eddie Harris’s original recording of “Freedom Jazz Dance!” Even sounds like Billy Higgins on the drums, too! Can’t wait to find out this one! I like how the piano lays out briefly during the sax solo. Sounds like Joe Henderson, or someone who idolizes the man! Track 9: I like the sound of the piano. Dig that buildup in the intro! Sounds like a private recording from a gig Matt went to. Dig those descending chords over the rubato note. Very cool. Takes a while to get going, but I like the ominous feel to it. Would’ve like to have been there to see this one performed! Track 10: Same band? Same gig? Either way, they’re kickin’ ass and takin’ names!!! Really enjoyed this collection! Now to post this, hopefully someone’s posted the answer to #2, and I can commence the self-kicking!
  17. YES!!! That's the one! I think I know what I did wrong: I left out the "AND" in my searches. Thanks!!!
  18. Hey, what happend to the 'Life of Brian' still? That was priceless!
  19. A couple of weeks ago, my local paper reviewed a book about a couple who was going thru a nasty divorce, which had, as a highlight, the husband wishing his wife had been on the outbound from Newark, and the wife wishing her husband had gone to work that day (he worked in one of the twin towers). Anyway, I can't find the review, have no idea the title or author, and tried to find it on Amazon with no luck. If you've heard of this book, can you please post the title/author? Thanks!
  20. I'm not opposed to this, not because I want to necessarily pick up JC posters (although of course they are welcome here... that goes without saying I hope) but because I like the idea of bringing a wider range of music discussion to the board. What should we call it? Noise pollution.
  21. I can't believe Lois is backing this pile of shit at the expense of her regulars. That's just plain sad and downright pathetic. She may as well change the name of the place to "JazzCroucher."
  22. Part of that is my fault for not returning Matt's Saturday phone call until last night (sorry everyone). I'm the first poster here! WOO HOO! The first person to make a phool of himself! And away we go! Track 1: Well, if I didn’t already own the Herbie Blue Note box, I would guess it was from that era. Sounds like it could’ve been a Maiden Voyage outtake. Very nice. Lovely soprano solo, too. Maybe a Dave Holland or other ECM recording? Track 2: Very nice. Love the guitar and the muted trumpet. Just wish it was mixed a little louder. May need to investigate this one thru the headphones or something. Track 3: Oooooh, I like the sound of the piano over the held-note by the trumpet & sax! An oboe!!! Wow! Or is that a clarinet? Or both! Sounds like a successfully swingin’ hybrid of classical & jazz, whatever that means. Quite adventurous to these ears. Track 4: More adventure, but less interest. Drones like this only hold my attention for so long. Track 5: Groovy beat! Sounds recent. Nice enough, but it doesn’t really reach out and grab me. Still a refreshing little swinger after the previous two adventures! Track 6: Sounds like a modern take on the old tenor battles. No clue as to who it is, though. Track 7: HA! More jazz accordion!!! And whatta beat! Oooooh, I love that ‘bone solo!! Soooo groovy! And dare I say it: greeeeeeeeeeeeeeazy!!! Track 8: Nice piano solo. No clue, though. Track 9: A much nicer piano solo! There was a chord change at about 1:18 that was real sweet! Ah, now some groovy boogie-woogie! Boy, do I love that vamp! Hey, wait a sec… how long has this been going on? Lordhavemercy, this goes on for ten minutes? Man, this is starting to sound kinda like a chamber solo. Not bad, mind you; but I sure am having trouble staying awake. Think I’ll move along to the next one. Track 10: Nice enough, I guess. This might be good for relaxing or drifting off to dreamland. Here at the office, unfortunately, it’s making my eyes heavy. Sorry. Track 11: Sounds like Mark Whitfield. Wonder whatever happened to him? He had such a beautiful tone. All in all, not a bad disc, and I’d probably enjoy it more if the environment were different (I’ll probably listen to this again at home, or maybe next week when I’m traveling; a little difficult to enjoy the nuances here at the office). But a fine job nonetheless! Now, on to disc two!!!
