YIKES! I better get that wishlist down to my sister PRONTO!
-
I know others have answered this. For me, the flute intro gives it away. I used to have the album in Daniel A's avatar, and I seem to remember that version being a bit faster. Of course, it's been years since I've heard that version, so my assessment of it could be completely off-the-mark!
-
It does sound like audio valium, doesn't it?
-
Y'know, having listened to this a few times, it's actually kinda grown on me. Truth be told, my first thought was Astrud Gilberto! Really!
-
Not to be nitpicky, but is the 13th the last day of the sale, or the last day of business?
-
The combination of your question and your avatar is absolutely priceless. Would you believe me if I say it was completely unplanned? Yeah, I don't believe it either! Me, too. I remember when we moved my sister down there in the summer of '90, seeing that it was going to be opening soon. I also remember taking my then-girlfriend (now-wife) there so I could buy Trane's Soultrane and Traneing In, and then slow-dancing with her back at my sister's apartment to "You Say You Care." I also remember being excited to find XTC CDs down there, cuz you sure couldn't get imports anywhere in Arlington! Lots of fond memories. Sure hate to see it go. First Sound Exchange, now this; Waterloo is pretty much all that's left now, I guess. You, sir, are too kind. I don't even have anything priceless to come back with, except to say that I wish I could move my avatar down to this line!

What kind of idiot would confuse the Jazztet with these guys???? Poor Trane's gotta be spinnin' in his grave right now. Again, what kind of idiot.... I concur with what the idiot said!

Yeah, I've never particularly cared for this album (probably why I didn't recognize it). Oddly enough, it was this man's playing that helped me when I was still new to jazz. Somewhere along the way, my interest in him fell off, and I'm pretty sure it was because of this album, or rather the fact that it was coupled with another trio album on one CD. Too much sameness for me. Just my opinion, of course.

Never cared for "Mind Gardens," but after Bev put it in that context, it makes sense now. As I said before, I'm glad the reissue has (as a hidden track) the instrumental track of "Mind Gardens." Now THAT'S some nice pickin'!

Anyone know when the final day is?

Well, GET AFTER IT, MY MAN!!!! 'Smatta witcha??!?

I loved Murray Street and have been listening to clips for Nurse all day. I'm gonna go get it tonight! Been lookin' forward to this; sure do enjoy their sound now that they're a quintet!

If I win that one, the neighbors better hope their homes are insulated properly! ss1 and scottb, always glad to help out a coupla fellow greeeeaze-heads!

Heaney's the main reason I don't post over there. I'll never forget back when he still posted at JC, there was a poster named Randy Oliver, who was a seminary student. In one of the usual Wynton threads, Randy said something negative about Wynton. Now, to put things in perspective, Randy Oliver was as kind a soul as you'll ever hope to meet; anything negative from him was always on an analytical level (hence, the main reason why Heaney couldn't comprehend it), and in my conversations with him, he was everything one thinks of when they think of the term "good Christian." In what must be considered the epitome of Heaney's classlessness, his response to Randy in that thread was, "Say a prayer for me, asshole." Randy Oliver passed away shortly after that. Since then, and this was about four years ago, not once has Heaney offered anything in the way of remorse or sorrow for what he said. The most I ever heard was that someone once said that "Heaney felt bad about it;" but not once in the thread that announced Randy's passing did Heaney ever offer anything in the way of an apology for what he said. He carries this low standard of sub-humanity to this day.

What have you learned from being on this forum?
Big Al replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Forums Discussion
I've learned that there will always be more jazz than I could ever hear or afford to hear or have the time to hear. -
HEY! Don't forget the trademark!

Without having read anything before, as usual: 1. At first, I thought I put in the wrong BFT! Then realized it was the source track that made up that BFT track. In any event, I still don’t know who it is. My first thought was Afro-era Diz, but then the organ kicked in. So now I’m torn between Diz or mid-to-late-60’s Duke, with Wild Bill Davis on the organ. Is that Cat Anderson on trumpet? 2. “Have You Met Miss Jones,” sounds like Erroll Garner. 3. Sounds like the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet. It also sounds like Art Taylor on the drums. Did they ever play together? 4. “Poinciana,” but I don’t know who. A little too show-offy for my tastes (my original scribbles that I jotted while driving around says “flourishy,” whatever the heck that means) 5. The piano player plays some lovely “toans” on this track. And even if I didn’t already own this album (or rather, the Mosaic), this man’s “blue” sound is unmistakable! I like the way Orrin Keepnews described his playing on one of his Riverside records (which sounds a lot like the album from which this track comes): gloriously lyrical. Yeah, baby! 6. “I Know Why (and So Do You),” but actually I don’t. Hampton Hawes maybe? 7. Sounds like late-60’s Horace Silver. VERY funky! Can’t WAIT to find out the source of this track! 8. “Maiden Voyage,” but MAN, this guy sounds bored. At first, I thought it might be that Hancock/Carter/Williams album on Fantasy from the 70s, but Herbie never sounded THIS bored! 9. Impulse-era Trane w/Hubbard on board? Or maybe a Freddie Hubbard date with Trane’s rhythm section? Pretty sure about Hub and the rhythm section, not so sure about the sax player. Then again, I could be wrong about the whole thing, but how can you not recognize Elvin, fercryinoutloud? 10. Alright, this is hands-down, for me, the single-best track of every BFT I’ve heard so far! I don’t know the song or the album, but I’d bet money that the lineup is Hubert Laws, (flute), Bob James (el piano), Ron Carter (CTI electrified bass that I love SO MUCH!), Steve Gadd (drums), and Don Sebesky (arr) for some early 70’s CTI disc. I loved this track so much, I pestered Daniel to tell me the answer NOW, cuz I wanna find this one PRONTO!!! And I hope hope hope HOPE it’s in print somewhere. This track reminds me of everything good about Hubert’s In the Beginning, which is not only in the top five Desert Islad discs for, but I was also gonna use that disc on MY BFT! And I still just might, seeing as how it’ll probably be 2007 before my turn comes around! 11. Hey, it took eleven tracks to finally break out the dreaded HAFC™! I sure like this track, though! 12. Vocals, yuck! DKDC™, HAFC™, BFD!!! 13. Again, HAFC™, and again, I like this one! 14. VERY lovely!!! Sounds like some long-lost early Jobim track. Another one I can’t wait to learn the source! 15. What was that? Hilarious!!! All in all, track for track, this is by far my favorite BFT of all the ones I’ve heard! This one’s gonna kill me, financially! A GREAT job, Daniel A! :

Jeff, you will be missed, my brother. I'll be in touch with you. Please take care, and I hope you come back sooner or later.

Rarely seen jazz-oriented photos, ads, etc.

Who's Peter Nero? -
Let's wait for a day or two more... I thought maybe we could kick it off when more than half of the participants have received the disc; what do you say? Oh yeah! That's alright with me. I'm just eager to get this one going; this is one of the more enjoyable BFTs, IMHO!

Thanks for the recs guys. It looks like there's a vast cornucopia of his music out there, so it looks like just about any place will be a good starting point. I'm looking forward to the WKCR broadcast tomorrow; hopefully, that'll give me a good idea of just how broad his musical spectrum was/is. (Edited because I can't tell my "tab" button from my "caps lock" button)
