  1. Heaney's the main reason I don't post over there. I'll never forget back when he still posted at JC, there was a poster named Randy Oliver, who was a seminary student. In one of the usual Wynton threads, Randy said something negative about Wynton. Now, to put things in perspective, Randy Oliver was as kind a soul as you'll ever hope to meet; anything negative from him was always on an analytical level (hence, the main reason why Heaney couldn't comprehend it), and in my conversations with him, he was everything one thinks of when they think of the term "good Christian." In what must be considered the epitome of Heaney's classlessness, his response to Randy in that thread was, "Say a prayer for me, asshole." Randy Oliver passed away shortly after that. Since then, and this was about four years ago, not once has Heaney offered anything in the way of remorse or sorrow for what he said. The most I ever heard was that someone once said that "Heaney felt bad about it;" but not once in the thread that announced Randy's passing did Heaney ever offer anything in the way of an apology for what he said. He carries this low standard of sub-humanity to this day.
  2. I've learned that there will always be more jazz than I could ever hear or afford to hear or have the time to hear.
  3. HEY! Don't forget the trademark!
  4. Without having read anything before, as usual: 1. At first, I thought I put in the wrong BFT! Then realized it was the source track that made up that BFT track. In any event, I still don’t know who it is. My first thought was Afro-era Diz, but then the organ kicked in. So now I’m torn between Diz or mid-to-late-60’s Duke, with Wild Bill Davis on the organ. Is that Cat Anderson on trumpet? 2. “Have You Met Miss Jones,” sounds like Erroll Garner. 3. Sounds like the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet. It also sounds like Art Taylor on the drums. Did they ever play together? 4. “Poinciana,” but I don’t know who. A little too show-offy for my tastes (my original scribbles that I jotted while driving around says “flourishy,” whatever the heck that means) 5. The piano player plays some lovely “toans” on this track. And even if I didn’t already own this album (or rather, the Mosaic), this man’s “blue” sound is unmistakable! I like the way Orrin Keepnews described his playing on one of his Riverside records (which sounds a lot like the album from which this track comes): gloriously lyrical. Yeah, baby! 6. “I Know Why (and So Do You),” but actually I don’t. Hampton Hawes maybe? 7. Sounds like late-60’s Horace Silver. VERY funky! Can’t WAIT to find out the source of this track! 8. “Maiden Voyage,” but MAN, this guy sounds bored. At first, I thought it might be that Hancock/Carter/Williams album on Fantasy from the 70s, but Herbie never sounded THIS bored! 9. Impulse-era Trane w/Hubbard on board? Or maybe a Freddie Hubbard date with Trane’s rhythm section? Pretty sure about Hub and the rhythm section, not so sure about the sax player. Then again, I could be wrong about the whole thing, but how can you not recognize Elvin, fercryinoutloud? 10. Alright, this is hands-down, for me, the single-best track of every BFT I’ve heard so far! I don’t know the song or the album, but I’d bet money that the lineup is Hubert Laws, (flute), Bob James (el piano), Ron Carter (CTI electrified bass that I love SO MUCH!), Steve Gadd (drums), and Don Sebesky (arr) for some early 70’s CTI disc. I loved this track so much, I pestered Daniel to tell me the answer NOW, cuz I wanna find this one PRONTO!!! And I hope hope hope HOPE it’s in print somewhere. This track reminds me of everything good about Hubert’s In the Beginning, which is not only in the top five Desert Islad discs for, but I was also gonna use that disc on MY BFT! And I still just might, seeing as how it’ll probably be 2007 before my turn comes around!  11. Hey, it took eleven tracks to finally break out the dreaded HAFC™! I sure like this track, though! 12. Vocals, yuck! DKDC™, HAFC™, BFD!!! 13. Again, HAFC™, and again, I like this one! 14. VERY lovely!!! Sounds like some long-lost early Jobim track. Another one I can’t wait to learn the source! 15. What was that? Hilarious!!! All in all, track for track, this is by far my favorite BFT of all the ones I’ve heard! This one’s gonna kill me, financially! A GREAT job, Daniel A! :
  5. Jeff, you will be missed, my brother. I'll be in touch with you. Please take care, and I hope you come back sooner or later.
  6. I'm in! PM sent!
  7. Let's wait for a day or two more... I thought maybe we could kick it off when more than half of the participants have received the disc; what do you say? Oh yeah! That's alright with me. I'm just eager to get this one going; this is one of the more enjoyable BFTs, IMHO!
  8. Thanks for the recs guys. It looks like there's a vast cornucopia of his music out there, so it looks like just about any place will be a good starting point. I'm looking forward to the WKCR broadcast tomorrow; hopefully, that'll give me a good idea of just how broad his musical spectrum was/is. (Edited because I can't tell my "tab" button from my "caps lock" button)
  9. Happy Birthday RDK!!! And quit lookin' at us like that!!! B)
  10. As saddened as I am about the loss of Steve Lacy, I can't help but feel an absolute hypocrite, never having a compulsion to actually own anything by him; and yes, I do find it morbid that it's taken his death to spark that interest (actually, it was Elvin's death, and WKCR's playing of tracks from Reflections that piqued my interest. I just filed it away in the back of my mind. I mean, didn't anyone else think he was gonna live forever?) So anyway, what should be the FIRST purchase? I'm thinking that the aforementioned Reflections oughta do it, and just go from there. But maybe there's something else better out there that would do the trick. I figure you guys possess a wealth of information about Lacy, more so than if I were to search the 'net myself. And yes, feel free to give me immense amounts of grief for waiting so long to learn about Lacy. (Edited for speeling)
  11. Everything Dan said! So, who starts the discussion thread? Can anyone? Or is it the responsibility of the maker of the current BFT disc?
  12. Very sad news indeed. RIP Mr. Lacy; your voice, like Elvin's, will never be silenced.
  13. You KNOW it!
  14. Except that your average Creed "fan" usually only responds in this way: U SUCK U JUST WISH U WR AS COOL AS SCOTT STAPP OMYGOD HE IS SO HOT U JUST WISH U WR AS HOT AS HE IS AND THERE MUSIC IS DEEP U JUST WISH U WR AS DEEP R U GAY? U MUST BE YEAH I BET U Or something along those lines. Anyhow, the bit that worries me is this guy doing a song for an album "inspired by" The Passion movie. (Aside: when is this asinine concept of albums "inspired by" a movie gonig to stop? I guess at the same time people stop spending their money on such crap). I can only imagine his song: I don't want your sympathy as I hang here dying for you I only wanted to touch you and now I'm hanging here for you I saw a movie that looked like my life, that guy also had long hair He was like me, they turned on him too, and now I'm all alone like that guy there (Cue insanely loud high-mixed bombastic alt-metal-thud) Because the chains of love they whip my back, I'm bleeding all for you I only wanted for you to see me as the deep tortured Jim Morrison wannabe that I am...... (Back to Pearl-Jam-ripoff-riff, followed by more bellowing, guitar solo, mix, edit, press, sell, make a million bucks)
  15. When are they gonna add some half-decent jazz titles?!?!?!?
  16. After listening to this a few times, Mraz’s bass sounds like it was recorded a la the way Ron Carter used to be recorded for CTI back in the early 70’s. Me personally, I love that sound, but I can understand how/why a lot of people do not.
  17. Finally picked it up this weekend, and it's worth every penny. So far, only got through "Destruction," "Oil," and "Boring." Love it! Absolutely love it! Rik: Are these lentils South African? YOU BASTARD!!! Vyvyan: Alright then: hello there, Cliff Richard! Rik: BASTARD!!! Love the part in the documentary where the producer says this was just an excuse to say BASTARD on the telly. Nobody said/yelled it better than Rik, IMHO!
  18. Congratulations, Jim! Once again, you speak the truth: my son just finished second grade today. His sister graduates next year; she was my son’s age when her mother and I got married. It has gone by way too fast (has it really been ten years since we said "I do" and eight since our son was born?), but I’m happy to say I’ve enjoyed every minute, and I’ve got the pictures to prove it!
  19. I’d guess that it’s just gonna be a straight reissue of the LP, as none of the previous LPRs have bonus tracks on them. I would hope that Verve, in its infinite wisdom, doesn’t spread this over two CDs.
  20. Just about any version of JUMPIN' AT THE WOODSIDE!!!
  21. Some things are much better left in the past..........
  22. Always figured Ice-T could play Art Blakey.
  23. Ding ding ding! Eloe Omoe, come on down! You've just won a lifetime's supply of Rice-a-Roni! DRAT! I was hoping it was me who had the wild guess! And I used to have this disc, too! Shows you how much I actually listened to it!
  24. Jackie Mac's "Right Now"
