Doc's Records was a favorite when they were in the Hurst/Euless/Bedford area; haven't been to their new store in Ft. Worth to check out the new digs. Not a huge selection, but a good one at decent prices.
-
What about Good Records? I know exactly which store you're referring to which you excluded, and I completely, totally, 100% agree with you. It's amazing that guy's still in business. I stopped at Good Records once and wondered, where are the records? Is this a joke? Really? I've never been there and have been curious for the longest time. Not any more. Thanks for saving me the gas!

Is that the store with the poor, over-priced selection run by the creepy guy whose leering at you with bad intent? Yes, except there are no prices on anything (if you show any interest in something you have to negotiate with the creepy guy and he tries to cheat you)--and everything smells like it has been dipped in a vat of cigarettes and ashes for the last couple of decades. That's the one.

Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Etc. Jazz & Other Concerts

Greg Waits (aka Slide Advantage Redoux) is playing at Sandaga's tomorrow night (Wednesday the 15th). I think they go on around 8 or so. It's Greg on trombone, backed by piano, guitar, bass, and drums. I saw them last month and they swung something sweet, despite that I made up 50% of the audience (my next-door neighbor was the other half). Y'all come see him. I hope to be there (if I can't find anyone to go see Sonic Youth with me ). -
Throw in Andruw Jones coming off a 3 home run game, and Felix pitching tonight! Great to have winning baseball back in Seattle. And Texas, too! This promises to be an exciting series. Last night's win (and series win) was HUGE. Sure am glad to see good things happening to/for the Rangers right now.

I'm pretty darned certain it's complete. Sound is great for this material too. Go for it, brainless. I can confirm what Lon said! Also, J&R is still having their $6.99 blowout on just about anything you can't find at Oldies or Concord, and the selection also includes Blue Notes & Verves as well.

OCD? Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder OK, got it! Funny... when I clicked on the link, it took me to the Target CD Explanation link. (just kidding, link works just fine) -
I see these around here from time-to-time. I'll keep a look out for ya!

What Valerie said! I vote for changing the color to ORANGE, and I'm sure my good friend Erik (a.k.a. Aggie87) would wholeheartedly agree!

It's heaven for OCD folks such as myself! -
As is usually the case whenever I post something like this, later that day, Nathan came in and told me it was working just fine. I didn't even do anything to it! Oh well, if it craps out at some point, I can come back to this thread. Thanks, guys!

Agreed! Believe it or not, the first time I listened to this, my initial reaction was "This sounds like Pat Martino a la We'll Be Together Again, only with a B-3 instead of a Rhodes." Nice to know I was within spittin' distance of at least one! Now to go back and connect titles to grooves and see how much this one's gonna drain outta the wallet! A fantastic BFT, Mike! :tup

I moved my DVD-drive out of my computer and into my son's computer, which didn't originally have a DVD-drive. MediaPlayer and RealPlayer tell me I need some kind of decoder. I've downloaded so many codecs and decoders by now, and none of them have worked, but maybe I just haven't hit the right one yet. Any advice out there?

I heard on the radio today that nobody is sure if he had a will. Can you imagine someone that wealthy whose financial advisors did not insist that he have a will? I can imagine someone that wealthy not listening to those advisors had they suggested he make a will.

That's exactly my wife's feeling. I'm in agreement with you. All I know is this is a tragic ending to what was becoming an increasingly sad existence. Just wondering: in ten years, what will people remember about MJ: his music or his celebrity? Think about it: the most recent work anyone's referenced is BAD and that came out.... over 20 years ago? I agree that THRILLER set a boatload of trends, and that millions of people were touched by his music in those halcyon days of the early 80's. But, since then? These days, if you were to hear MJ on the radio, it was more likely to be "news" (so-called entertainment news) instead of anything music-related.

Well, that'll teach me to give up on a BFT before listening to the whole thing: those last three tracks MADE the whole disc for me, and track 7 was a very nice added bonus! I'll be listening to those again. A LOT! Thanks again, Bill!

Sascha Baron Cohen (Ali G.)
Big Al replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Cohen does the Kaufman shtick well, but I never found Kaufman to be all that funny either..... However, I do enjoy the voice-overs that Cohen has done, particularly the voice for the king on Madagascar. -
Can't believe I forgot the most obvious one: GREEEEEEEAZY!!!! I was listening to this while driving to Dallas last night to catch Greg Waits (aka Slide Advantage Redoux) group. What a pleasure it was to be cruising down I-30, windows down, greeeazin' up the highway. Same thing coming home, too! (As an aside: where Greg's group was playing sat a beautiful Hammond B-3! After listening to this BFT on the way there, I so wanted to unlock that puppy and wail! Not that it would've sounded any good, but oh how cool it would've been! If they ever have an open mike night..... )

I haven't looked at any of the responses yet, and really don't have any guesses (although I'll try later). Basically, they all pretty much sound the same to me. That said, this is EASILY the most consistently enjoyable BFT I've heard since MartyJazz's BFT 28. This is one I'm gonna be coming back to on a regular basis and may even purchase some of the discs that make up this BFT (assuming I don't have them already, always a possibility these days). I listened to this on my return flight from Virginia on Saturday, after having had one of THE most stressful days driving from Newport News to DC. This music is so good, so relaxing, so.... hell, I'm running out of adjectives! It's just... GOOD. Consistently good! I can put this on and not want to turn it off, just let it play to the end. Guesses later, Mike, but just wanted to let you know how much I'm enjoying this music!

I'm just now finding this out!!! I just e-mailed the following to my dad: "Apparently he died on Sunday, but I just found out about this on an online jazz bulletin board. I don't know about you, but this feels like the loss of a family member, since I've been listening to those records since I was in diapers. If I'd never heard those Ventures records of yours, I might not have pursued the bass, the guitar, maybe even rock & roll!!!!" I love this quote by Don Wilson from the Rolling Stone obit: “Boy, I tell you, he’s the brother I never had,” Don Wilson told the News Tribune. “And he is much more than any brother could be. He and I were partners for, like, 52 years. And to tell you the honest truth, we had never, ever had an argument in all that time — never.” RIP Bob. And thanks for the music. Every last note of it. I'll be spinning a whole buncha Ventures tonight.

Not connecting with me on first listen, but then it took me forever to appreciate KOA as well. Besides, I'm still reeling from the abandoned frenzied ferocity of MOMOFUKU to be ready for Costello unplugged anytime soon.

Lighten up, Dan. It's one series. In JUNE! Out of how many series in "twelve years or something?" The Rangers play the Sox two more series this year. IF by some miracle the Rangers manage to go over .500 on your club this year, THEN you may have a legitimate gripe. And even then it won't matter if your boys are on top and mine are finding their usual way to mid-season mediocrity. But until that happens (and I'm not holding my breath, just enjoying it for as long as it lasts), spare me your charity and stop acting like the Red Sox deserved to win these games more than the Rangers.
