Mobley just might be more popular than we think, if activity within this thread is any indication.

The "round-midnight" thread
Big Al replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That's usually my FaceBook time. -
Is there any jury in the world who would convict Kevin Millwood for a double-homicide if Grilli & Fransisco had blown that lead? I'd be the first to vote NOT GUILTY. I'm glad I didn't watch, I would've gone completely apeshit. Thank God for Elvis Andrus, though; I was completely wrong about this guy. Putting him at SS and moving Young to third is turning out to be a much better move than a lot of people (myself included) thought at the beginning of the season. Could be worse I suppose: at least Brad Lidge isn't on the Rangers. Yet.

Yeah, I know.... just dreaming out loud.... if nothing else, it'd be nice to see Concord do it. I mean, if they can make a Stitt's Bits box, anything's possible!

REVISITED is all kindsa sweet! Especially the tracks with Kenny Burrell. Does it seem like Red got a little more adventurous on the Jazzland label? In addition to two trio albums, he also recorded an album with Les Spann on guitar and flute (SOLAR), and a quintet album with Blue Mitchell & Pepper Adams in the front line, and the Jones men (Sam & Philly Joe) completing the rhythm. The latter album has a very definite Blue Note Byrd/Adams vibe to it. I wish Mosaic would do a Select of Red's Galaxy recordings, as there seems to have been a final burst of recording over four days in 1979 with lineups that varied between trios and a sextet, which were released on four or five LPs. Seems to be the perfect candidate for the 3-CD treatment.

"Minor Vamp" from Blue Mitchell's BLUE SOUL. Beautifully arranged by Benny Golson, and a fantastic way to kick off a fantastic album!

I would not be a bit surprised to see Tampa Bay take the WC this year. Reality has finally caught up with the Rangers, and while it was fun while it lasted, I don't hold out much hope for them: their next series is three in NY. Yikes!

My opinion is that I would like to see Concord do for the Red Garland sessions that produced half of this album and all of ALL MORNIN' LONG, HIGH PRESSURE, and SOUL JUNCTION what they're doing for the upcoming Miles/Sonny Prestige recordings. Those two sessions that produced those 3-1/2 records fit nicely on two CDs. Unless, of course, Concord is finally going to get around to releasing the third and final Trane box. I won't hold my breath for either, though.... As for the album itself, it certainly lives up to its title, even if it does skimp on the quantity of music (certainly not the quality!)

Quintet session w/Dorham on the frontline & the Elmo Hope Trio (Hope/Percy Heath/Art Blakey) for four tracks, and then a leftover Thelonious Monk/Sonny Rollins track with Paul Chambers & Art Taylor added to the original 10"-LP to make it a 12"-LP. It's good and although I wouldn't call it a classic, it's still worth having. Imagine if Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers had employed Sonny & Elmo and you oughta have a pretty good idea. Or if the Elmo Hope Trio replaced Max Roach and backed Sonny & Kenny in the new Brown-Roach Inc. after Clifford passed away.

Agree completely. Nothing would be sweeter than to see the Packers' entire defensive line put a big fat red target on Favre's ass on October 1 and and make sure he doesn't make it past the 1st drive of the 1st quarter.

You're tied with about 42 games left, so now every game matters. I looked at the Rangers schedule the other day and they have a pretty favorable one. The last three games against the Angels may be gimmes if the Angels have clinched and they want to rest players. Much better than last year for you, right? No doubt about it: no one expected the Rangers to be this good this deep into the season (much less at all!). Still, aside from the inconsistent bats, the Rangers' biggest problem has been their inability to beat the so-called "easy" teams: they can take care of the Angels and the Red Sox with the greatest of ease, but the Twins? How in the name of the baseball gods can a team be this good, yet blow five-run leads for two consecutive games and lose to a team that is where the Rangers usually are this time of year? That's baseball, I guess... Big Al, Didn't you hear on ESPN that the Twins are part of the most exciting division race in the major leagues? There only 5 games back, they could go all the way. A-freakin-MEN!!!!

$5 for Blue Mitchell's A SURE THING??? That's a HELLUVA deal for that wonderful (and OOP) disc. Somebody grab it! I would, but I already have it. Probably my favorite of Blue's Riversides, and that's saying a lot cuz there isn't a bad one in the bunch, IMO.

I'm actually surprised Jerry Jones didn't snatch him up - he's usually infatuated with players like Vick - mainly because they're notorious and (in Jones' mind) create more curiousity for his team.... not that they may actually be beneficial on the field. IMO of course. You don't think..... no, it couldn't be.... it's just too unreal to consider..... maybe Jerry's learned something after all these years?

Bringing up this five-year-old thread because it still remains one of my favorite BFTs after all this time (spinning it right now, again for the umpteenth millionth time!). Now, thanks the Concord blowout, I believe my collection now has more CDs from this BFT than any others (including my own, I'm pretty sure): Track 3: Sir Charles Thompson: Mr. Big Horn (Charles Thompson) Delmark CD DD-450 Takin' Off. Track 12: Cal Tjader Trio - Vibra-Tharpe (Cal Tjader) Fantasy FCD-24764-2 Extremes. Track 13: The Ron Crotty Trio - Ginza (Vince Guaraldi) Fantasy FCD-24760-2 The Jazz Scene: San Francisco Track 15: Cal Tjader Quartet - Triplet Blues, 6th movement of the San Francisco Suite (Cal Tjader) Fantasy FDC-24742-2 Sentimental Moods. Track 21: Cal Tjader - Mambo at the "M" (Luis Kant) Fantasy FCD-24730-2 Black Orchid. So, once again Mike, thanks for an absolutely fantastic and unbelievably swinging BFT!!!

Pudge is back! YAAAAAAY!!!! Always figured he'd be back eventually to wrap up his career with the Rangers. Last night hurt, though. Seems like everyone else in the race won but the Rangers. OUCH!!!

U.S. Blue Note RVGs good music cheap...new additions

Package arrived yesterday, everything nicely packed, padded, & packaged! -
There were a number of items I purchased, that would have cost me some big bucks say through Amazon Marketplace. To me a small price to pay in order to get some hard to find releases. Yes! There's something very cool about seeing your purchase confirmation with the words "You saved $[hundreds] by ordering from us!"

Shit like this makes me wish there was a way to ignore posters within certain threads, because frankly Dan, as much as I enjoy discussing jazz with you and doing the BFT thing with you, I'm sick to death of opening this thread and reading your latest fair-weather profanity-laced diatribe against your alleged "favorite" team. I'm also tired of you trashing my team all the time, as if they're not worthy to play in the same major league as your team. Did you notice that the Rangers DIDN'T roll over and play dead after Friday night? Last year's team would've done just that (and, in fact, they did after that one game where they were down by ten, came back to take the lead, only to blow it again and again); I'm damn proud of the Rangers that they bounced right back and took the remaining two games. I'm sorry you feel that the Rangers don't play to your standards, but I sure as hell am not sorry that the Rangers owned the Sox this year, taking 7 of 9. What really pisses me off is you don't give credit to anyone: in your world, this happened because the Red Sox are "contemptible pieces of shit," not because the Rangers actually played good baseball this year! As for your October comment, yeah, I hope the Rangers win as well, but I'm not holding my breath. However, if it irritates Red Sox fans like you if the Yankees beat the Rangers in the first round (which is still anybody's grab as of today, the season isn't over last time I checked), I'm quite alright with that, too. (EDITED. Last paragraph re-written.)

Aw man, RED ALERT is a terrific album! Don't understand why anyone wouldn't enjoy it!

Don't know. They get shipped to me, I remove the jewel cases and just ship the contents. Makes for smaller packages and less postage. I get reimbursed, of course. But do they pay extra for hot metallic pink envelopes? I'm not sure I want that representing me in another country.....

Any board members were at the orignal Woodstock?

Well, you can be forgiven, comrade: you were only two at the time and I was still a few months away from making my debut, otherwise I mighta helped out! -

LF: sly/family stone complete box
Big Al replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Yeah, and they weren't even that good. They're videos of Small Talk-era SFS playing "Everybody is a Star" and another classic-era track.
