Rollins, right ? Who is the sidemen ?

I think I only have his name on Miles´ Dark Magus, but it seems I listened more to Dave Liebman on that record.

It´s a nice record, I think there is a little ballad dedicated to his baby daughter on it, which is very very nice. But I have not listened to it for decades. My only more touch to Johnny Coles seems to be on the Mingus recordings with Dolphy and Cliff Jordan.

Dear Jim ! You are right, this is missing. Well me myself I can´t put anything on my website, because my photograf/webdesigner is doing that job. She told me if we put soundcloud I wouldn´t get a cent for my compositions from the Austrian Asociation of Composers (AKM) but on Spotify I will. My bass player who has his website from the same designer has his tunes on spotify direct on his homepage and that´s what I intend to do as soon as the boss of the label get´s the okay from spotify Austria. Only he has the authority to do it, and usually we have to wait 14 days until Spotify Austria gives the ok . So very very soon it will be. I want people to hear the whole stuff , I couldn´t decide what to edit or how many seconds a short "taste" of the music might can need..... Finally , I´m just the "music maker", I play , I compose (write down with the help of others since my writing is only rudimentary), with very very little knowledge about anything else . As soon as I get news from Mr Guschelbauer from Alessa -Records (ALR) and from my webmaster/photograph/designer, I will let it know you ! Sincerly Gh.

Last year we had "Fire Waltz" in our repertory, it was Allan Praskin´s wish to play it and it sounded great !

I knew Leo Wright well but didn´t talk to him about Dolphy. So maybe I would have had more infos. The only thing I can say is that Dolphy was the FIRST alto I heard and my first love for that instrument. I heard Dolphy without even knowing who was Bird..... A lot of progressive guys around here they loved Dolphy.

I have listened closely to that special period and have seen Miles in Vienna with that Band. I was just 14 so this was maybe the first concert I went out to see. Though I had heard some acoustic Miles before that on record (Walkin´ done in the 60´s with his so called "2-nd Quintet", the transition to electric and funk rhythms was the most natural thing for people who lived then. So it´s natural I have a special interest in the music they played then. Anyway, we shouldn´t complain, this period is well documentated with 3 live double LPs. But from what I had heard on youtube the Sao Paolo Gig really was something special, it´s a wonderful intro into that tune in Bb-minor, which I think was called "Funk". Miles usually started with "Turnaround Phrase" (like on Panghea), but sometimes with "Funk" (like on Agharta). About sound quality I´m not the smartest guy, since my hearing is not so well after 50 years of playing music. I want it if it captures the sound of the live event, I don´t care for let´s say some distortions, because the live situation is so hip.....

Looks interesting, but the sale of that CD on Discog is blocked, and one other source didn´t seem to be serios because when I wanted to play the order, I got a mail from my card company tellin me that my card will be changed due to attempts of fraud...

As much as I know the tunes will be on Spotify, but this can be done only by the disc label, not by me since in Austria the rules for publishing on Spotify are strict and only the Boss of the record label has the right to publish it on Spotify. I was told that by my webmaster. So....... as soon as it will be digital also I let know you all on a separate topic......

I remember I have purchased "Descent into the Maelstrom" decades ago, it must have been in the 70´s and it was quite expensive. A very strange record: The title tune seems completely free like Cecil Taylor, but harder to understand than Cecil Taylor. Some tunes are with an obscure trio, where one is based on "You Stepped Out of a Dream" but what I often found annoying about Lennie whom I otherwise appreciate, is that he doesn´t find the time to play a theme properly, it also happens on the Paris 1965 tunes, beautiful ballads, but I would have liked to here the plain theme before the improvisations. And some pieces sound like of 3 Hands are playing. This kind of overdubbing I can´t stand. I think I liked the trio tunes when I was young, but know the drummer and bassist sound very weak..... it doesn´t seem to be together.....

Two of my favourite vintage bop recordings The Wardell Gray stuff is really all star. I never had heard before Shelly Manne on drums, or.......maybe on an early Ornette Coleman record. It´s a pleasure to hear his strong bop drumming here. And the Afro-Cubop is one of my favourite latin records. Howard McGhee and Brew Moore in top form......

Well, but there is also music, I was told that at least 6 tunes will be played. My everyday´s english is also weak because I don´t know all the words, I learnd it for the music. And if we spoke German together and it´s about the music you and me love, I am sure you would understand some of it . It´s not that way. I´m sure we won´t speak dialect/slang on that show. By the way, there are so many different dialects in Austria. Can you imagine that if I might go to the west-austrian districts I couldn´t understand what they say ? Mostly dialects spoken in Tirol, Vorarlberg, Stiria and Carintia I wouldn´t even understand what they say if the speak among themselfes.

Hello Friends ! I don´t know where to post this. Once there was a topic "Miles Davis Bootleg Series" with a lot of previously unissued material like the "Lost Quintet" etc. Few Days ago I heard on youtube the great Miles from 1974 at Sao Paolo and I think it is some of the best things Miles did in that very dense and exiting period, together with Liebman, M´tume, Foster, and so on. How much would I like to hear this on CD. I wonder why it was not issued yet, since I think it´s some of the greatest Miles of the ´70´s . Until I finally will have this, my favourite remains "Dark Magus". I heard that band live it was my first jazz concert, it all started there, and with Mingus of course......

Some of the hottest guys of the NY scene, that´s sure !

Lucky Thompson ? I think he had a quite interrupted career, in the 40´s he was very much in demand with Billy Eckstine and all the bop groups, from the 50´s I only know his solos on Miles Davis "Walkin" and it seems that in the early 60´s he was "everywhere" in Paris, playing among others with Bud Powell.... Gilmore was one of the best of the saxophonists somewhat lesser known than Trane and Newks and so on. I saw him only with Sun Ra where he was fantastic, and heard records with sessions with him like "A Blowing Session". CHUCK MANGIONE AND KEITH JARRETT with Blakey ? I might listen how this sounds. I know Mangione only from his "Children of Sanchéz" which I really liked, and I liked Keith Jarrett from the earlier things with Lloyd and above all the tenure with Miles Davis, his playing Fender Rhodes and Yamaha Organ at the same time was magic. How might it have sounded, them together with the Messengers. How did they change the messengers sound? I have heard there were also sessions where the Messengers played with electric piano ? It seems that the period after Hubbard and Morgan is not well known or well documentated, the only better known activity of Blakey until his contract with Timeless Records was "Giant´s of Jazz".

It´s a great record ! Too bad that Leo Parker didn´t live longer, I think this was his last album.

Reminds me of the great Austrian caricature artist Manfred Deix: When there was a point wether the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra would admit women as musicians, since it was mens only orchestra, he made a caricature and wrote "Der Mann spielt gern Bratsche, für´s Weib gibt´s die Watsche" 😲

Very interesting. Yes I know about the Hannibal books, but never bought any, since I did have the original versions. About jazztalk in German language, when went to school and was the youngest of a gang of jazz lovers and musicians, the unsual kind of German being talked here in Vienna was Viennese slang. I think there was two kinds of Viennese slang, one more the workman´s type, and one more the "hipsters" kind of slang. If someone played a good solo, you might say: Des woa UR-LEIWAND des solo was´d do gspüüt host. Try to translate the word "Leiwand" . If something was good it was "leiwand", and if it was weak, it was "oasch" . And one of the first things an older, longhaired jazzfreak said to me when I was still almost a kid was "Heast Burle, hoost ´leicht aa scho die Fil-les de Killi-Mann-Tscharo ? " You have to pronounce the litera "L" in the Viennese way..... das Wiener "L"..... Really sounds funny, it sounds more like commenting sport. I remember if there is a smaller town and the one who writes for the local press about a concert a jazz group does there "wie viele Solos haben Sie gemacht, können Sie uns eine Zahl nennen", or they translate be bop as "Zweierbob" .... I did read that in Jazz Podium....

I must say the Dave Liebman later records are quite hard to find. I have one which is only a trio, Dave with Hamid Drake and Frank Gambale and it is one of the greatests, it´s like a smaller instrumentation of music similar to "Drum Ode", which is one of my favourite 1970 albums of all kinds of jazz. I don´t remember having heard Liebman play often standards, I heard him play once "Milestones" and once "Well You Needn´t but what I like most from him is his typical post Coltrane sound without copying Trane. And the stuff he did with Miles. I have heard there is an album which is a newer one and has "Ife" on it, but it is only digital, and I´d need CD,

You are right. That´s why I prefer to make announcements on gigs in English and it´s also easier for me to write about music in english, you can see it on my website.

I always like live records. I´m not really an audiophile and couldn´t be with a lot of hearing lost after decades of playing, but on live records you hear it like if it´s played live, and you hear the drums better than on many studio records.

Yes, for me as a teenager then it was good reading, to learn a bit english, those books and linernotes, that´s why I couldn´t survive in everyday´s live english, only in music talk , I can make stage announcements and even here in Austria I make them in english because in german it sound´s somehow corny 😄

Liebman is one of my very favourites ! I don´t have this one. Is this more traditional stuff, Ellington and so ? I heard Shelly Manne´s drumming very very well last night when I spinned a Wardell Gray live album where he is the drummer. I had not heard more than his name before or seen his picture, but what he is doin on that Wardell Gray album is great, loud like I love it, loud, quick and everything, just the way I like to hear the drums. I must admit that I almost dare to say I listened more to the drums than to the horns.....

Oh yeah, I have this and think I had bought it in the mid 70´s . It was great reading, though I like books with more written stuff about the music better. And the one chapter with a drug night in Brussel could have missed. This is pure fiction I think. The fiction of the talk between Bird and Dean Benedetti could have happened that way, that´s true......
