I already tried this recommendation in a separate thread (which promptly plummeted off the board), but it's just too good not to try it again. The quality is reason enough to check it out, but the quantity is mind-blowing (wish I could put it on a DVD!):
M2/S videos
I also got a kick out of this guy... not the greatest player in the world, but he's got a nice touch and fine sound, and it's just plain cool to have the opportunity to check out a talented cat like this from a distant (to me) land:
Dick Onstenk- jazz guitarist
I would limit this to the live recordings. The studio stuff has totally different stylistics and is from a different time span.
The Tjader Fantasy sessions would benefit from chronological presentation, anyway - I sorted out some of the early recordings myself on CDRs, and it makes much more sense.
We've got to figure out a way to get Mike into those vaults.
Say it again. SHOUT it. Maybe even cheat a bit and squeeze in the 5/19/53 session from Blue Haze.
... not sure I'd buy it (again), but it would be nice to see that stuff get some props for a change.
I don't think it's ever been issued on CD, but I do believe it was reissued on vinyl in the UK back in the late '70's/early 80's, on Jasmine. Probably not much easier to find now than an original.
"The FCC's indecency rulings are required to be based on contemporary community standards. KCSM was not the only PBS station in the San Francisco Bay Area market to run this program, but it is the only station to be punished by the FCC."
Can somebody explain something to me... the "F" in "FCC" stands for "Federal", yes? The Scorcese series on the blues was aired on dozens (?) of PBS affilliates across the United States, yes? So... how is it that one station (a relatively small and financially unstable one at that, the way I understand it) is being singled out here? Is it simply because a complaint (or a petition?) was filed only against KCSM by some local viewer(s)? I suppose that's it, but it's absolutely mind-boggling to think that the only "indecency" complaint filed in the U.S. in reaction to this film originated in... the San Francisco Bay Area?!
It's also kind of odd in that we have a number of other PBS affiliates in the Bay Area, and the vast majority of people would have seen this program on some other station- most of them on KQED (SF).
Oh well, the more I try to rationalize this, I suppose the less sense it's going to make.
In the same vein, "VERVE ORIGINALS" prominently displayed in the same place would have been easier to understand... but... Decca?
Chuck, I'll admit that I have some idiot in me too, but at least I'd do some research if I were responsible for decisions like this.
"Did Jimmy Raney ever make a bad recording?"... I can't think of one I'd call "bad", although "Strings & Swings" was never a big personal favorite.
