I've only searched for "Prestige" so far, but I can't seem to find a labelography. Odd that this kind of thing wouldn't be available online somewhere. Anyway, a decent record price guide (such as the Goldmine guide) should have most of the info you're looking for. I did find an outline on one site for Prestige and Riverside, so I'll get out my book and fill in some details: Prestige: Mono copies: Yellow Label w/Black writing 1) W. 50th Street NYC (up to 1956, #'s 7000-7140) 2) Bergenfeld, NJ. (1957-64, #'s 7141-7320's) Stereo copies : Silver Label w/Black writing (1960, Bergenfield era, PRST prefix) 3) Dark Blue label with Trident Logo on the right (1964-67) 4) Dark Blue label with Trident Logo in circle at the top (1967-69) 5) Purple Label with Trident Logo in circle at the top (1969-72) 6) Bright Green Label with Trident Logo (also white label promos) (post-Fantasy purchase) Subsidiaries (jazz) included New Jazz, Moodsville, Swingville, and Status, the latter reissuing earlier titles. Riverside: 1) White label with blue writing and Mic and Reels logo; "RLP-12" prefix (up to 1956, #'s 100-240's) 2) Blue Label (Mono) with silver writing and Mic and Reels logo (1956-63, #'s 240's-476) 3) Black Label (Stereo) with silver writing and Mic and Reels logo (late 1958-); initially, as "1100" series, later with "RS-9" prefix to three-digit catalog number. 4) Blue Label (Mono and Stereo) with no Mic and Reels logo;(1963-64) Above labels have "Bill Grauer Productions" at bottom. 5) Aqua Label with "Orpheum Productions" at bottom (1964-67, #'s 478-499) 6) Black on Brown Label (after ABC took over distribution in 1967)

a tempting opportunity just waiting
Jim R replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Where's the envy smiley? Man... I haven't been an LP collector for about 15 years, and this kind of talk still gets me all excited. Anyway, I hope it all turns out to be good (and clean). Give us a FULL report! -
Yeah, it just bothers me that the same old pattern is still there, both with regard to Fisher as well as the tendency for the W's to fail to hold onto big advantages because of stupid decision-making and poor execution down the stretch. Even JRich- as good as he is and as much as he has carried the scoring load- had a lot of bad 4th quarters last year (I hope he's been working hard on his FT's).
-
Only one game I know, but the Warriors loss in their final preseason game against Phoenix the other night troubles me. The W's came out smokin' behind Davis, JRich and Troy Murphy. They were up something like 17 in the first half, and then Derek "block my shot" Fischer went into his "get on my shoulders, boys" act. He turned the ball over, he made dumb passes, he forced up three's early in the clock, he tried his one-man fast break a few times, driving into the lane against (three) bigger defenders. All of this from a VETERAN guard. Just silly. Singlehandedly killed our momentum, and although we were able to stick around in the 2nd half, nobody (including Baron) could bring it back. So, we lost a close game to a very good team. This was exactly the pattern we followed last year. I was also disappointed by the play of Andris Biedrins, who looked good toward the end of last season. I'm also not sure what people (including Montgomery) see in Cabarkapa. Sure he has some skills, but he's so goddamn slow. He telegraphs everything. Probably has as many shots blocked as Fischer. In addition to Baron, JRich and Murph better stay healthy this year.

what makes an older pressing expensive?
Jim R replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Patricia, I wasn't trying to pick on you or being picky for picky's sake. I was just trying to help you clarify your post #5, where you said "12"" (apparently) every time when you meant "10"". I for one have seen very few Vogue or London LP's over the years, and I was curious as to what size they really were. -

Final word, Jim. TEN INCH. Sorry for the confusion. The picture is the record I have. Reading off the cover, "Clifford Brown Ensemble Featuring Zoot Sims A Vogue production LDE 158. " ← Ah, okay. Looks like post #5 needs more editing! -

Hmmm... why not just buy the "Jazz Immortal" CD? -

Jim R replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Patricia, your post #5 still includes this, which was one of the things that didn't make sense to me: "12" LPs were about three times the price of '78s and were a new idea and produced for a quite short time." Obviously, it was 10" LP's that only lasted a short time. Between that and the one you edited, I wasn't sure whether you meant to say 10" in any of the other places where you were tallking about 10 vs 12. -

I'm a little confused by the references to the 10's vs the 12's here. I see that Patricia edited in one correction, though. Anyway, the original (10") LP on Pacific Jazz was: "Clifford Brown Ensemble" Later reissued as "Jazz Immortal", as a 12" (and CD) with this cover: -

Mosaic Complete Master jazz piano series
Jim R replied to ASNL77's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
"During a five-year period (1969-74) the Master Jazz label recorded 11 swing-based pianists in solo settings. Although the label went under later in the decade, the recordings were treasured by collectors. Mosaic, on this four-CD set, brought back all of the music from the original five-volume Master Jazz Piano series, adding two unissued selections and a full album released separately of Ram Ramirez's playing. In addition to Ramirez (who is heard on 13 numbers), there are 13 performances by Earl Hines, four apiece from Claude Hopkins, Cliff Jackson, Keith Dunham, Sonny White, Teddy Wilson, Cliff Smalls and the obscure Gloria Hearn, eight by Jay McShann and two from Sir Charles Thompson. Most of these pianists (other than Hines and Wilson) rarely recorded during this period in their careers, making this box very important both musically and historically." This thread reminds me of Star Trek (of course), which reminds me of Leonard Nimoy, which reminds me of this: http://www.straightnochaser.org/Ballad%20o...o%20Baggins.mov So, this topic wasn't a total loss after all. -

This reminds me... I have two CD's from the early 90's that were released under the Sony umbrella- Carmen McRae's ALIVE, on the Legacy/Columbia Jazz Masterpieces label; and Art Farmer's GENTLE EYES, on Legacy/Mainstream. (McRae also recorded the following two LP's for the label- SECOND TO NONE; and HAVEN'T WE MET?- that were released in 1965). The Farmer was recorded in Vienna in 1971. I don't know the origins of this label, but it seems that the ownership rights have bounced around somewhat. I also have a couple of CD's put out by Mobile Fidelity which were originally Mainstream albums- Jimmy Raney's TWO JIMS AND ZOOT; and Sarah Vaughan's LIVE IN JAPAN. I totally agree. In some ways, what I do like about these stories -- is how they're really NON-stories. Like when Michael Stipe came out a few years ago. I think most people see the headline, and are like "Oh, OK, whatever". ← ... um... yeah... -
My sentiments exactly! They were FUN to watch last season (especially after Baron arrived). I'm looking forward to watching them again, whether they get close to the playoffs or not.
-
I'm sure you could do it pretty quickly, too. No real good excuses... sometimes I kind of hit a wall, and realize that I need to keep what I have under some kind of control. I do have a bootleg or two from later decades, btw.

Impressive, Mike... but mine were sorted chronologically.
