  2. Thanks. I guess Freddie Green was not on "The Rhythm Section" session. Not sure where I saw that...

  6. I guess I tend not to trust information like that until I see some kind of evidence. Kind of hard to hide a whole series (2000) from the history books... but then I've only checked a few sources.
  7. I had just posted about this CD in a Barry Galbraith topic, and it occured to me that I don't know the origins (original releases, if any) of this music, which was apparently recorded in NYC in 1956. The Fresh Sound notes give no details on that. I had thought this was from the Epic LP "The Rhythm Section" (Epic 3271), but apparently not. I had that LP years ago, but didn't keep it. FWIW, that session included Freddie Green, and this CD includes some tracks with Jimmy Cleveland. The data I have: Hank Jones, Barry Galbraith, Milt Hinton, Osie Johnson, Jimmy Cleveland (on "Jimmy's tune", "wolf talk", "sahara" and "blues") blues for sal, polka dots and moonbeams, jimmy's tune, minor's club, they look alike, he was too good to me,ain't we got fun, wolf talk, milt's on stilts, mambosies, out of braith, the legal nod,do nothin' till you hear from me,hallelujah, sahara, mona's feeling lonely, kookin' in the kitchen, walk chicken walk with your head picked bald to the bone, ruby my dear, koolin' on the settee, blues
  8. Mike, I just noticed this thread. I'm curious, have you learned anything more about this? I was not aware of a 2000 series either. He showed no close-up of the label, so I wonder if he made an error with regard to the LP # That thing sold for only $5.50?
  9. "Luiza" actually dates back to 1981. I think it first appeared on an album with Edu Lobo, "Edu & Tom", recorded in November of '81. For a chronological list of Jobim's compositions, you can go here and select "All of Tom's music": http://www.jobim.com.br/cgi-bin/clubedotom...s3.cgi?ling=eng

  11. He sat out last night's matchup with the Jazz, and the W's struggled the entire game- especially on offense. They looked lost, and had a hard time getting good looks. Even JRich couldn't find many shots. I wonder if Montgomery has forgotten he's supposed to coach when Baron isn't suited up. Fisher and Aaron Miles played okay (not many turnovers, but not many assists, either), but it's times like this when I wish we'd taken Luke Ridnour. Pietrus shows flashes of brilliance, but he still looks green in a lot of ways. Hopefully Baron's back in action when they come to The Garden.

  14. I believe this reissue is made up from the two Hank Jones albums Here's Love (Argo, 1963) and Swings Gigi (was it on Golden Crest?). 'Here's Love' with Kenny Burrell is splendid, but I've heard some less enthusiastic opinions regarding the other half. Do you think it measures up with the session with Burrell, Jim? ← Daniel, this material didn't come from the LP's you mention. I had "Here's Love" on LP some years ago, and was never very impressed by it despite the great lineup. This CD is very nice, though. Some great playing by Hank as well as Galbraith. The songs are: blues for sal, polka dots and moonbeams, jimmy's tune, minor's club, they look alike, he (she?) was too good to me,ain't we got fun, wolf talk, milt's on stilts, mambosies, out of braith, the legal nod,do nothin' till you hear from me,hallelujah, sahara, mona's feeling lonely, kookin' in the kitchen, walk chicken walk with your head picked bald to the bone, ruby my dear, koolin' on the settee, blues I actually don't know where this material came from. The liners don't say (not a good sign, although I go back many years with Fresh Sound and thought they were mostly legit). If anybody knows the history on this material, I'd like to hear about it. I had originally assumed this was from the Epic LP that Larry mentioned above, but apparently not.
  15. I'm wondering whether any Organissimites (Organissimoans?) have the Tommy Flanagan "Solo Piano" CD which Chris commented on in the AAJ thread, and whether anybody has any ideas related to this. I find it very interesting and curious. Maybe even worthy of its own thread...
  16. Guitar And The Wind never did much for me, but I haven't heard it in about 20 years. Here are two CD's where Galbraith gets some solo space: and
  17. I never connected this with X-mas either (don't recall it being on the jazz x-mas collections I have). Anyway, I can see why it happened (sort of). It's less easy for me to see why something like "My favorite things" has been included on x-mas albums. I guess some producers want something "fresh" on their holiday releases.
  18. "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" Ah, that takes me back... to a time when I had no idea what the hell that song was about! I still don't. ← As 50 plussers, we're obviously dating ourselves Jim. ← Whoa now... I'm still 49 for a few months yet!
  19. Good point. I'm really not either, it's just fun to act like it sometimes. People should be comfortable with what they like, and not be afraid to admit it... unless of course it's the Monkees.

  22. I'm that old. And I agree. Okay... here goes... the last time PBS ran the documentary on The Carpenters, I watched it... the whole thing... and... I... enjoyed it. I'll go for the hat trick: I also dig a lot of Andy Williams' old Columbia stuff. BTW, this thread is right along the lines of these: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...uilty+pleasures
  23. Strange game last night between the Warriors and the Hawks. The W's looked terrible in the first half (17 turnovers, missed most of their FT's, got outrebounded by 10), and were down 10 at the break. First two possesions of the 3rd were turnovers. Troy Murphy picks up his 4th foul and goes to the bench, and the W's go small. They proceed to go on a 29-2 run and go up by 17. Then, on a fast break, Baron pulls up with a hamstring strain and goes to the bench for the rest of the night. Instead of collapsing, we go up by 25 and coast to W #1 behind JRich's 28. Oh, and Derek Fisher had a good game.
  24. Jim R

    Kirk Lightsey

I agree he doesn't get mentioned very often, but I happened to hear his name just the other day with regard to this: http://www.corkjazzfestival.com/Kirk.html Anybody go?
  25. What looks like an "ear" is actually a "P" stamped in the dead wax by one of the pressing plants ("Plastilite", or "Plastilyte") that produced some BN LP's.
