Consolaçao is a classic, written by Powell in collaberation with Vinicius de Moraes. It's been recorded probably hundreds of times, by a great variety of Brazilian artists. I don't have that particular compilation, but I have some others, and as I recently said to Lon, I think they're often a great way to get into Brazilian music. Powell was a prolific recording artist, especially after going to europe. Check out this fantastic Baden Powell site! Baden Powell discography
  3. The material on this "companion" CD was (first?) issued in Japan on Paddle Wheel, under the title "From Vanguard With Love"
  4. FWIW, here's a selected discog: Ernie Henry- Last Chorus (Riverside) Kenny Drew- This Is New (Riverside) Kenny Dorham- 2 Horns , 2 Rhythm (Riverside) Wilbur Harden- The King And I (Savoy) Ike Quebec- The Complete Blue Note 45 Sessions Of Ike Quebec Mosaic (Blue Note) Curtis Fuller- Soul Trombone/ The Jazz Clan (Impulse) For the Harden session alone, he's in my personal hall of fame. 5. I use online discographies pretty frequently, and I cross reference any information I find with other sources, if possible. You can also sometimes find what you're looking for online outside of formal online discographies. I think the more detail-oriented a person is, the less likely they are to be satisfied with getting all (or even most) of their information from one source (such as a Lord set, for example). Dare to question what is written in any source. Human beings have a way of making errors, and also perpetuating them, as Mike mentioned. As has been stated many times at the BNBB, the AMG is sometimes the most convenient way to get general information (the type that is difficult for even them to screw up), but I suspect that many folks have too much faith in their data. One thing about online artist discographies is that they aren't as permanent as a printed discography. In other words, when a person decides to shut down their website, the data disappears rather quickly. I've saved quite a few URL's over the last few years, and every once in awhile I will discover that a site I had saved has disappeared. I'm beginning to think I ought to be copying (and possibly printing out) the really good ones...

  7. That's sort of true and false. That is, if you want them as individual discs with original cover art, yes- they're only available as imports. However, all five albums were compiled onto 3 CD's by Fantasy a few years ago, and they're available (titles are "Lonely Star", "Stairway To The Stars" and "On A Misty Night").
  8. Boney Liver (??) Jefferson... no good. Can I switch list 1 with list 2? That would make me "Pretty Fingers Jefferson" B)

  10. Sorry I overlooked your post until this evening, Jim. Anyway, oddly enough- your attached image appears on my screen looking just like I normally see it- everything in pastels (light purple, that yellowish color, etc). I don't see the pink, but that's only because I can only see two posts (the pink would have appeared in the third and fourth). At any rate, thanks for checking into it. I'm currently taking advantage of the iCab browser's option for setting the toolbar color (which I have set on tangerine, to match your header), which helps to take my mind off of the goddamn pastels!
  11. One of these roboticons has a very unusual occupation...
  12. Jeff, I was away for awhile there, but (believe it or not) I got back just in time to see Gome... before he became...??? (Little Toot?) Anyway, I hope Mondrian stays in the rotation! B)
  13. Jeff, I was just being nutty. Africa Brass, thanks for your tips. I still couldn't get a "pict" to work, even after I saved it as a "png" (the only option I had that matched the board's choices). I did, however, get an Easy Photo jpeg to work, which is cool. I'll keep experimenting.
  14. Okay, here's what I just tried. I went to the avatar settings page, removed the Burrell URL, clicked on the upload box, and selected an Easy Photo file from my hard drive. Then, I noticed that in the box where I had clicked, it just showed the name I had given to the file when I created it (in no way related to the original URL from where I originally got it off the internet). I tried submitting it anyway (knowing it probably wouldn't work), and got: "You're not allowed to use that type of file as an avatar" So, how would I go about althering the file name when I try to complete the upload?
  15. Hey Mr. "I'm hipper than anybody here with my Mondrian", DON'T mess with Gomer. OR Barney Fife, for that matter. (deep breath)... My current avatar is a shot of Kenny Burrell, circa early 60's, with his customized (with a Charlie Christian pickup) L5. GOMER PYLE!?! Africa Brass, thanks... I'm not really sure if I can answer your question. I just noticed that some of my saved "photos" in "Easy Photo" (the icons) are labeled "pict" and some are labeled "jpeg". I don't know why or how that difference occurs. Maybe I should do some experimenting, and see if I can use your tip...
  16. Hey- just keep that up, and I warn you- I'll change mine to Grant Green. No- a HANDSHOT of Grant Green!
  17. Yeah, Impossible... me too. Can I (we) appeal to some of the truly gifted (kiss kiss ) computer minds around here? Good- I thought so. I was able to figure out how to get an image off the internet, but what I'm still not clear about is how to upload images from my hard drive. I tried it once (at AAJ, actually), and failed. Since it's a pain in the ass to find just the right image on the net and still come in at or under 100X100, how can larger images be reduced on my computer and then uploaded? The application that I've been using to edit graphics on my Mac is called "Easy Photo" (by Adobe). I think I'm going about the upload process correctly, but I don't really understand if it's technically feasible to do it using this application software...
  18. I know what you're saying, and we may not disagree, but I just want to add- even if we insert the word "technical" in front of "virtuosity" there, I think we'd be unfair to Chet. Like Miles, he had some amazing chops to call upon when the time was right (don't forget about the "audition" where Bird chose him...). All in all, it's not that important- Chet's style was what it was, and we needn't qualify his greatness in terms of technical ability (or our perception of his technical ability, since he wasn't a consistently "flashy" trumpeter)...
  19. Ed, why am I suddenly getting this urge to swap avatars?
  20. It's been too long since I've pulled this out myself. Thanks for reminding me, Brad. I also love the recordings Desmond did with Ed Bickert in the 70's...
  21. Jim, thanks. Yeah, these colors are weird (I'm still seeing the same colors using iCab, BTW). There are a couple shades of purple, a couple shades of pink, some yellowish-tan, some gray... it's bizarre! Oh well, it's not enough to drive me away.
  22. Mr. Dye, thank you! I'm running iCab right now, and although I may need to figure a few things out (it's running a bit slow), I can now read the board with no problems. Also, I haven't had to use the refresh function yet. Hopefully this is a permanent fix. Thanks to everybody for their sugestions!
  23. Thanks Big Wheel. I actually have IE 4.5 installed (only use it occasionally, as I generally prefer 4.0 and am very comfortable with it after all these years). I tried logging on using that, and there was no improvement. I suppose I may have to just live with it, unless I change my attitude about software upgrades. I just dislike upgrading unless it's absolutely necessary. Every time I've upgraded something (OS 8.5 to OS 9, AOL 4 to AOL 5, etc etc), I've run into problems, and seem to lose features that I liked. This is the only site that I'm currently visiting regularly where I have this problem, so I may just decide to tough it out. I can read posts pretty well, fortunately. It's trying to read the thread list on Today's Active Topics that's causing me the most trouble in terms of text size (there are other text size issues, but that's the one that is fundamentally most important). This constant refreshing of pages is getting old, too. I used to have this problem at Jazz Corner a few years ago when I was visiting there regularly...
  24. I registered here a couple of days ago, but I haven't spent much time here, due to technical difficulties. I already mentioned it to Jim, and he kindly said he'd see what he could do (which I appreciate). It seems like I'm the only one, which strikes me as odd, but I can barely read a lot of the text here- VERY small, despite the fact that I've got my browser settings on "largest". I'm on a PowerMac G3, hooked up on AOL (version 5), and using IE version 4.0. I know- I'm not up to date in terms of computer and software (upgrades usually cause me more headaches than it's worth), and this is only the second time I've ever encountered this on any website (the text on the True Blue site looked like this when it first went up, BTW). Not only that, but I have to hit "refresh" about 75% of the time when I want to go to a new page. I'm getting a lot of blank screens on the first try. Anybody else experiencing any of this? I'm also registered at AAJ, and while there's one jerk there who's making some waves about "BN people", all else is very good. I happen to like the software over there, for many of the same advantages that Organissimo has over the other boards I've used (and I've used several, going back to JCS). The ability to go directly to the latest post on a thread is like a dream come true. To be honest, though, I don't really dig the color scheme on this board (I'm actually wondering if everybody is seeing it the way I am...?)... I mean... purple, tan, and... PINK? I hate it... but life will go on...
  25. I just recently got hip to what Eddie Higgins has done over the last 20 years or so, and what he's doing right now. He's my current favorite, hands down. I've always like Hank Jones, Cedar Walton, Barry Harris. I dig Marian McPartland. I also like Bill Charlap a lot...
