  1. Some of you might like to read Afropop’s interview with Heidi Feldman about black Peruvian culture and her book, “Black Rhythms of Peru.” The Spanish translation of Feldman’s book is available in bookstores in Peru. http://www.afropop.org/multi/interview/ID/134
  2. I am not sure why it would be “practically unheard outside the borders of Peru.” Other CDs with the music of Afro Peruvians have appeared in the USA, including the “Rough Guide to Afro Peru” http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/3420057/a/Rough+Guide+To+Afro+Peru.htm and the David Byrne compilation “Afro-Peruvian Classics: Soul of Black Peru” http://www.amazon.com/Afro-Peruvian-Classics-Soul-Black-Peru/dp/B0007XT84Y If you want to read about the music of Afro Peruvians, check out “Black Rhythms of Peru: Reviving African Musical Heritage in the Black Pacific” by Heidi Carolyn Feldman in http://books.google.com/bkshp?hl=en&tab=wp You can watch a bit of the music in the PBS documentary Black in Latin America - tomorrow’s (or check local listings) episode is called “Mexico & Peru: The Black Grandma in the Closet” http://video.pbs.org/video/1896948350/ I hope the above is not too much info.

    ASIA

Hearing Carl Palmer in Asia was probably not much of a surprise to those who heard his band PM. PM released its only album “1:PM” in 1980 and, believe me, Asia was an improvement over PM. At the time I thought PM was Palmer’s attempt to jump on the most commercial “new wave” bandwagon. I believe the album appeared as an LP only in Europe and when it appeared much later as a CD it was called Carl Palmer’s PM.
  4. FWIW, I bought the Coltrane Reference. I read this heavy, hardcover book cover-to-cover (not in one sitting). Since then, I go back to the book to look up details about once a month. My belated thanks to all the people who helped put the book together.
  5. A CD appeared last year called "Boston Diary" and it includes the piece "Trio for Piano, Violin & Cello" by Gunther Schuller. Has anyone heard this work or the CD? The CD also includes works by Malcolm Peyton and Pozzi Escot: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=8158093
  6. It would be great if this time Coleman also tapes an episode of Austin City Limits
  7. This clip from YouTube shows Lena Horne performing with a guitar player. The guitar player appears to be Kenny Burrell. Can anyone confirm? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-Ua0hGC1iw
  8. Recently I watched Bill Bruford's 1982 instructional DVD "Bruford & The Beat" and the credits listed Max Roach as executive producer. Does anyone know of other projects that involved Bruford and Roach? By the way, the DVD is a must-see for every Bruford fan.
  9. The CD of Queenie Pie is about to be available. Amazon is one place that has it: http://www.amazon.com/Ellington-D-Queenie-Pie/dp/B0038KYSRK Last night I saw a great performance of Duke Ellington’s “Queenie Pie” on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. The opera includes an excellent live performance of Creole Love Call (sung by Morgan Gale Beckford – she is a student at Texas). The performance is part of a conference on Ellington (“Echoes of Ellington”). A definite must-see for fans of Duke Ellington. “Queenie Pie, with music by Duke Ellington and text and lyrics by Betty McGettigan and Ellington, is Ellington's last large-scale work and only opera and has rarely been performed. The work holds considerable interest for its merging of musical styles: jazz, opera, and musical theater. The University of Texas Butler Opera Center, the Butler School of Music’s jazz program, and world-renowned jazz vocalist Carmen Bradford join forces to create a unique production of the work.” Queenie Pie continues through April 26: Friday, 8pm; Sunday, 7pm. More information is here: http://www.music.utexas.edu/echoesofelling...queeniepie.html and here: http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Is...id=oid%3A767428
  10. Has anyone watched the DVD "Stravinsky and the Ballets Russes: The Firebird/Le Sacre Du Printemps"? This DVD appears to be a new film of the recreation of the original ballet for the Rite of Spring - its not the Joffrey ballet peformance that PBS broadcasted about 20 years ago. Here's one place that has the DVD: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...amp;style=movie
  11. look, i found a fourth review from 1944: in the new and exellent book: "the music and life of theodore fats navarro-infatuation-" by peterson and rehak (scarecrow press 2009) is mentioned at page 68 a review from the billy eckstine band´s december 1944 engagement at the apollo in new york. a variety review surprisingly reveals that parker on this occasion had rejoined the band, and that he and gillespie were heavily featured soloists. "house reviews: apollo," variety, 27 december 1944: page 35. keep boppin´ marcel
  12. It might be easier to find a library that has the entire Down Beat in microfilm.
  13. Looks like the year is correct. Levin's article "Monk and Taylor" appeared in the 16 August 1962 issue of Village Voice (p. 8). On p. 1, there is a banner that says "The Monk & The Taylor - see Jazz, p 8." According to the article, Taylor opened at Take 3 on 6 August. You can find the article at Google News Archive: http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advan...ed=us&hl=en
  14. Backspin is almost entirely used records, but still a good store, no attitude whatsoever.
  15. Most of you probably know that Dizzy Gillespie stabbed Cab Calloway back in 1941. Here is how the Baltimore Afro-American (27 September 1941, p. 15) reported the incident: Cab Calloway Stabbed in Arm HARTFORD, Conn. - Cab Calloway, scat-singing orchestra leader, was stabbed in the arm and hip at a local radio station Sunday night, allegedly by John (Dizzy) Gillespie, a member of the orchestra. Reports are that Calloway suspected Gillespie of having hit him in the face with a spitball just before Cab's Quizzicale program was to go on the air. The altercation took place after the broadcast.
  16. Back in 2004 I got the 2-CD Sony Legacy Edition of Santana I - which I thought had Santana's complete performance at Woodstock. The booklet includes these notes written by Hal Miller: "For the first time we get to listen to the entire Santana program at Woodstock...Interestingly, the band opted not to perform "Evil Ways".... Well, sure enough, a few weeks ago, Sony Legacy released Santana - The Woodstock Experience, another 2-CD set that once again includes Santana's complete performance at Woodstock. But this time, the performance includes "Evil Ways." Anyone know what will be on next release (presumably in the year 2014 or 2019) of Santana's complete Woodstock performance?
  17. For those who don't already know, KLRU will broadcast an interview with Sonny Rollins on May 21, 2009. http://klru.org/texasmonthlytalks/archive/rollins.php The following is from the Sonny Rollins website: "If you live in Texas, check out Sonny's interview on PBS outlet KLRU's Texas Monthly Talks on May 21st. After the program is broadcast, the interview will be streamed here on Sonny's website." http://www.sonnyrollins.com/index.php
  18. If I remember correctly, Sonny Rollins performed in Austin in November 1992, at the same place he was at last night. I missed the 1992 show, but I did see last night's concert - great show!.
  19. If you still are interested in hearing Duke Ellington's Queenie Pie - Longhorn Records is supposed to release a CD recording of the performance sometime this fall.
