  1. I keep thinking of ways to increase my income to maintain the same % of music expense. I've gone through similar periods where I buy more than I can consume but I've been good about spreading the artists around. That said, I have way to much: Wynton Marsalis
  2. I never get tired of this Trombone CD.
  3. I just heard a Ray Charles recording 'Roll with my Baby' and damn if he didn't sound exactly the same as Nat. I did a double take on my iPod when I realized it was Ray singing.
  4. What? I'm interested in your perspective. I was referencing the original article, not Ramsey's which I admit I haven't read.
  5. I"m not nearly as pessimistic about the future of jazz as stated in the original article. There are signs that the youth market is moving away from the pop music found on most FM radio stations into a much broader spectrum of music. They enjoy finding new bands that are unknown. They are much more willing to experiment and purchase a single by an unknown after hearing a clip on itunes. I do think that the article makes a valid point about needing to market to the young. There are plenty of studies that show that children are able to pick up a 2nd language much more quickly than an adult. I feel that the same applies to jazz. One only needs to look around to the current jazz musicians as futher evidence. Many many of them had parents that were either performing musicians or at least had a wide varity of music to listen to when growing up. This early exposure leads to better understanding, deeper listening, and a wider acceptance of music in general. I never understood why musicians do not perform free concerts in schools as a way of marketing themselves. Heck, it's a daytime gig so it's not likely lost income from another paying job. I remember hearing bands when I was in High School. I distinctly recall having the Air Force Jazz Band perform at my school which had a lasting impression on me. I see little downside in marketing jazz this way and would expect that most schools would embrace these types of programs. They want to offer programs that exposure students to the Arts but have great difficulty due to dismal budgets.
  6. I was browsing Amazon today in the George Russell section. I came across this MP3 download for $1.78. I'm not at my home computer but the minute I get home I'll be downloading this puppy. Link
  7. I've never heard of Manfred before this thread. I checked out his bio and discography at AllMusic which didn't seem to enthusiastic over his music. He has only a handful of recordings and the 'pick' is 10 years after these recordings were released with no other recordings during those 10 years. There has to be a story behind this. I'm curious why there is so much interest in this re-release. I must be missing something.
  8. I'm one of the people who may make the large prize lottery tickets appealing. I realize that the odds of winning are zero which is why I don't play these games.....unless the jackpot hits $100 million or more. Then I play. It's worth the $1 investment to me just to dream of having all that money. I find it to be a pleasurable distraction from the day to day drudge, thinking about the moment where I give notice to work. I then think of all the 'things' I want to buy. New House, vacation house, cars, new computer, etc. I then realize that I really only need a couple mil to make me happy. I dream about how to share the wealth - open a jazz club, help the sick and poor, help my neighborhood. When I think about rubbing elbows with the rich and famous (I'm sure they'll invite me to parties once my net worth is above a certain level) and have already decided that if I win I'll never allow myself to stoop this low. I'm now allowed into their club now so if they want me they better send me an invite before the winning numbers are announced. I just noticed your last comment Dan. I think the line is 'I spend my money on booze, whores, and weed. The rest I waste.'
  9. I just saw the Star thingy on my profile. I have only 2 and its depressing the hell out of me. Can we have some transparancy here? I'd like to see who's rating me.
  10. This thread is interesting to me. I've never really gotten into Chets sound but I think that is because I'm only familiar with the music that received airplay on the radio. I don't own any of this recordings and never had the desire to dig into his career. I have a friend who is learning to play the trumpet at the age of 50. His goal is to be able to play Chets solos note for note. He can do this on the harmonica but has picked up the trumpet with just this one goal in mind. He holds Chet in high regard - easily on par with Miles Davis. That's a stretch for me. Could his commercial success be one of the reasons why he is controversial? Have I been exposed only to his mediocre output?
  11. Damn, I missed the video before it was removed. I'm looking forward to hearing your music and thought this was my chance.
  12. Wow Lon, this is one impressive thread. It speaks volumes about you as a person. Happy Birthday to you!
  13. 14. I own a Kirby that is at least 30 years old, if not 40 years old. It was my parents vacuum which they gave to me after Mom needed an automatic pushing machine because of surgery. I've replaced countless belts, the scrub brush that is attached to the brush, bags, cords, etc. It still works as good as a new machine so I can't justify buying a replacement. The video shows a newer model but its basically the same as my old one.
  15. I hear you moose, the price took me a while to accept. I justified it because I never have time to brew a cup on workday mornings. I can swing this because it takes 30 seconds from when I push the button. I also factored in the amount of bean waste I had with the grinder pot - be it burnt or just not finished (usually because its burnt). I had problems brewing single cup amounts and getting good flavor. I think it passed through the beans to fast. I was happy as long as I brewed a half pot or more.
  16. Downloads will become uploads as soon as Cloud computing catches on. It can't happen fast enough for me. It will add a new legal issue around sharing of copywrite material.
  17. I've had it with my coffee machine. I own a Braun that has a grinder on the top that takes whole beans and grinds enough based on my settings. The grinder is so loud that it wakes the wife up every morning. The other issue I have is that the coffee goes stale after an hour. I'm the only one in the house that drinks coffee so I find that I end up throwing away unused or burnt coffee. I've just pulled the trigger on a new Flavia machine. This creates a single cup of coffee, tea, cappuccino, hot chocolate, and other specialty drinks. I use one at work and while its not 'as good' as fresh ground beans, its close. Once I factor in the burn and waste issues it beats out the fresh ground method.
  18. I use a cut up extension cord for my speaker wire. Is that bad?
  19. I saw the other thread on the iTunes initiative and my heart sank a bit. I'm going to explore this a bit more before throwing in the towel as it does seem that there would be value in this type of service. It seems that everything is moving to cloud computing at a fast pace. With the new iPod Touches having WiFi access it opens up many ways in which a business model could be created, and it would not need to interact with iTunes other than being able to recognize the song that is playing. I could envision it also attached to streaming services like spotify. In addition to the royalties other major costs would include database programming, website hosting/gear, data entry (a lot of data entry), legal, marketing. I suspect to make it 'really' good it would have to analyze your current collection and automatically download (or make available in the cloud with push technologies) the appropriate metadata files.
  20. I have a stupid/genius business idea. I want more metadata included with CDs and downloads. Metadata is information about data, in this case it is the individual song or recording. I want the liner notes added to each tune. I want to know who is playing, who engineered, who shot the photo on the cover, etc. I'd like to have the images from the CD covers and inserts included, and I'd like to be able to view and scroll through all this information on my iPod as I listen. Give me as much information as possible, added to each song in metadata format. Then, when that tune is added to my collection, I want it to appear in a relational database that I can search and use to generate reports. It should also create playlists for mp3 player downloads of the files using multiple filter criteria. *** My observations lead me to believe that there is a market for such a product. Are many of you are also frustrated with the limitations and errors with the metadata that is currently available? Would you pay extra to have it provided, along with the tools I mentioned above?
  21. This thread has me adding Bobby's CD (and Bernsteins and Rogers) to my 'to buy' list. Jazz needs more marketing like this. I see Bobby is viewing this thread! Best of luck on this recording, I'm looking forward to hearing you for the first time.
