  2. Earlier this month, a deal between Internet radio providers and the record labels at long last provided some clarity around the long-term prospects for the medium. Big players like Pandora now pay a per-song fee or percent of revenue on each song streamed – whichever is higher – while smaller services need only pay a revenue share. Link
  3. I have always been fond of his Orefu recording but in all honesty I've not heard a peep out of him in a few years. I went to his website which shows that he's still very active but in semi-retirement. I see that Dan Ouellette penned his biography - is this a worthwhile read? What is the consensus on his 2006 recording Dear Miles? Has he stopped playing free? AllMusic.com rates his recordings all over the map but with very few 4 and 5 star ratings. Is it because of his compositions that he's not higher rated?
  4. It's a good recording. I'm not surprised that Dave has shaken up his sound once again. I love hearing the tuba in place of the bass, its refreshing.
  5. Give me that fillet-o-fish, just give me that fish Give me that fillet-o-fish, just give me that fish How would you like it if you were stuck on this wall If that was you in that sandwich you wouldn't be laughing at all Aarrgh. No matter how much jazz I listen to this is burned into my memory. I hear the sandwich is terrible too, way to much salt.
  6. I buy my music from eMusic and Amazon. I used to buy from CDBaby but haven't in a long time. Oh, I did buy the Stolas CD from Downtown Music Gallery.
  7. I've had a few times where I walk away from music for months. I find that curiousity gets the best of me and I end up reading about new music. I soon find myself clicking on the shopping cart. I'm curious about some of your responses about the 50-60s era. While I do love that music I am so taken by the modern 'new' releases that I think I'll never run out of recordings to choose from. What makes that era better to your ears? Is it that it was novel at the time and that there were far fewer players with jazz sensitibilities relative to today? To my ears the newer music has richer harmonies and rhythms. The musicians have assimilated more sounds and have a larger pallet to choose from.
  8. I've been listening to Charles Lloyd's Hyperion with Higgins and have really tried to focus on Billy's playing. He truely is a monster player. I'm especially impressed with how he plays around Brad Mehldau's piano solos and Grenadiers bass. I like his interaction with them better than Jorge Rossy and the trio series. I'll be checking out some of the Billy Higgins recommendations in this thread. Thanks!
  9. I live in a college town so using a % of gross income as a penalty for college students would be the equivalent of free parking for them. The rub is that most of these college kids come from wealthy families who could well afford to pay a greater than average penalty. I also see many out of state plates from these same college kids. They pay insurance based on where the car is registered and end up paying less than had they registered their car in this state. If this is abused there is no reason why parking tickets wouldn't also be abused. In MA we have a program where we give free cars, insurance, and gas to the unemployed. This type of program may be something for you to focus on as it has the net result you're looking for and may be easier to both find supports and get some legislation passed for your state.
  10. Same thing happend to me over this weekend. I got two voice calls and an email from BOA saying that their fraud unit found suspicious activity on my CC. I logged onto my online account and there it was clickandbuy.com There was no $ in the transaction, I believe BOA blocked it. After talking to customer service, they voided my card and are sending a new one. I have no idea how they got my info. I've never been to their site.

    Ran Blake

Up. I was thinking about the solo thread and started to think about where Ran Blake would fit, if at all. I do love his playing but its under represented in my collection to have an informed opinion. There are some great recommendations here which I hope are still available.
  12. Are you suggesting a tiered ticket structure - one for the poor and one for the rest? I'm not sure how that gets implemented. I was in this situation when I was a recent college grad. I drove a piece of crap car that had an expired registration sticker on it because I was to poor to pay the $50 fee. I got stopped by the same cop on two consecutive days. I found out that these were classified as moving violations that also carried premiums on my insurance policy. Double whammy x 2. I can see your point as it relates to these types of violations. I'm not in agreement with parking at a meter. I can see abuse of all kinds that impacts other people's rights.

  14. I can't either Hardbop. His technique is unique but he falls short in other very important musical areas. This recording however is the exception to his catalog in my opinion.
  15. Stanley Jordan's first recording: Touch Sensitive
  16. I'm still having problems starting threads. This one seems like a good fit for this. Happy Birthday Live Aid 1985. This has to be one of the all-time best concerts for pop fans. This is a nice set of photos from that concert from Life magazine photographers: http://www.life.com/image/first/in-gallery...85-on-the-scene Note the collectors copy for M.J. available as an ad to the right of the screen.
  17. Does Jarrett like to hear the applause on his own recordings? They seem to go on and on and on and on and on and on. I bet he could add another tune to most of his CDs if he just cut out the applause. Is this an ego thing?
  18. This clip of Cab Calloway has had to have had an influence on MJ. It's from The Big Broadcast (1932), in which Cab sings about the recreational pleasures of illicit drugs. At 2:20, he begins a dance break that is similar to Michael Jackson —a quarter century before MJ was born. In particular, note Cab's proto-moonwalk. Perhaps we jazz lovers can take solace that, even though Michael Jackson's music was not part of the jazz tradition, his showmanship was. Popular dance was not always foreign to jazz.
  19. Who is Guy? Happy Birthday!
  20. I wonder if this model is sustainable given that they need to survive based on downloads. I can see many folks listening to the CD once to see if they like it and then looking to less expensive sites like eMusic to download the copy. My emusic subscription price per song is $0.41 which is half of what lala charges. I would expect to hear commericals on the first listen as the initial sign that lala needs to increase its revenue stream.
  21. I just sent in some $. I'm willing to double it if you can figure out why I can't start topics or use the add reply button.
  22. In Massachusetts they have a 1 day or 1 trial rule and that you can only be called once every 3 years. I firmly believe that they use the registered voters list for the jury pool. If you don't register you're never called to duty. I've been called three times but only once did the trial get to the point where they decided to bring the jury into the courtroom. I had to appear before the judge and the two trial attorneys. It was a domestic violence case but fortunately I was not one of the jurors picked to sit on this trial. I have jury duty on Oct 8th of this year in the Roxbury court system. What fun. I'm bringing my iPod and am hoping to drown out the festivities that take place in the waiting room. The rooms I've been in have been terrible. Plastic fold up chairs to sit on all day. No table or desk to lay out stuff. One or two outlets for the room so be first to plug in or go without. Yeech. Don't get me started on the other jurors....
  23. Interesting article. I have Eden's 'Waves: The Bossa Nova Session'. It's been a number of years since I've listened to this recording, going to give it a spin again today. I recall it being a very nice session.
  24. I don't like any of them, sorry. I can't tell if it promotes music or landscaping or hypnotism. #4 looks like it came out of a James Bond movie but I actually like this one more than the others. Recommendations: organissimo.org will tell folks you have a website. WWW is rarely used in site addresses today. I think you should add .org to #2-4 and remove WWW from #1. Create some tie into music so that people unfamiliar with your group know what it's about. Suggest having the guys wear iPods. Perhaps a set of headphones wrapped around the logo. I hope you find this constructive rather than counterproductive.
  25. Consider using iGoogle.com This has become my home page. You are able to change themes (like wallpaper) and add stuff - similar to widgets - to your page. The level of customization is impressive. I have my favorite stocks listed, dopplar radar for my neighborhood, several news sites (WSJ, NYT, Bostonherald), cheep gas in my neighborhood, sports listings, gmail, a few games, what's hot on google search (excellent widget), calander, TV Guide listings. There are plenty more widgets to choose from. You can move them around your home page so that your favorites are easily accessible.
