  1. Consider offering a coupon for a discount at a future show. Or a discount for a package of tickets good for a year. Depending on how far in advance you book shows, consider creating a compilation CD with a tune from each of the bands that would perform in the next 6-12 months, give it away for free at each show. Have someone write down email addresses instead of relying on good penmanship. Everyone wants a bargain today so create a pricing methodology that makes them feel this way. Our local jazz club gives away free tickets to a repeat customer with the understanding that they are to bring in new listeners with them to the next show. It seems that you may need to book more smooth jazz. Fact is that most people do not understand jazz so what sounds like inside to you is just to much for them. Try to target promotion to a like group of people. You have the church crowd but how about a focus on children or the elderly? A bit of interaction - sing alongs for the elderly, group percussion for the children, that sort of thing. Get the emphasis off 'great music' and on to a 'great experience'. Suggestion forms - feedback from those who attend - can help ensure that your future shows meet their expectations.
  2. Ricardo Dias / Peter Epstein / Joao Paulo: Nascer It took me several years to warm up to this recording. I find it amazing that my tastes change over time. I have to chalk it up to better/more intense listening and a more developed sense of harmony and rhythm. Edit: Wrong thread...I didn't see that this was for Vinyl. I have it on CD.
  3. I admit not being a big fan of OP, but I also admit to know owning a single recording of his music. My exposure to him is very limited and this thread is making me question why I didn't care for him. I'm not ready to purchase his Mosiac but I would be willing to get one of his recordings from eMusic. Can someone recommend a CD or two?
  4. I find a lot of similarities on this recording to Lou Donaldson's The Natural Soul. I admit not knowing much about Big John Patton but he does help lay down the funky soul sound. Grant Green really grooves on his solos. My eMusic copy has a bonus track - People Will Say We're in Love - I have no idea why this was left off the original recording (LP playing time is my educated guess).
  5. I'm not putting Mr. Jarrett down at all. He's one of my favorite jazz artists. Do you not see the difference between improvisation and composition? Is there a jazz musician that can not improvise?
  6. This is the most depressing thread I've read on this site. My heart goes out for all of you. My impression of folks that post on this site is that your education level is well above the average citizen. My guess was that most all of you are employed. Boy am I wrong on that assumption. I've been able to avoid the RIF at my company but I'm not sure how much longer it will last. I work for an IT company in finance. We were told earlier this year that most of our jobs will be moved to LCOs (Low Cost operations...i.e. India). I just had my annual review and scored near the top so I have to assume that I'm safe for another year. Beyond that I feel that I'm at significant risk. I downsized my expenses back in Sept of last year when it became clear to me that no jobs were safe. No more eMusic, cell phone, electronic toys, etc. Funny thing is I haven't really missed them at all. (160 gigs of MP3 jazz helps). I look at ads on Craigslist. I find maybe one or two per month that I would apply to if needed. That is so depressing. I did update my resume recently in the event I am RIF'd so I could hit the pavement running.
  7. I think I need a definition of composed. Example: Does Keith Jarrett compose or does he just improvise? Were not a lot of the classical jazz compositions the result of repeated jam sessions? Does changing the melody within a set of chord progressions represent a new composition? Stan Getz...I can't remember a single composition of his but he did collaborate with Jobim. Does that count?
  8. Check out this site. Be sure to click on the special events link at the top of the calendar.
  9. You can try Wally's or the Beehive. Wallys is very very small but has up and coming local talent booked every day. The Beehive is more upscale - I've never been to this venue - they book local talent and server food.
  10. I found a home for the little guy! Had he stayed much longer my cats would have been able to offer a dinner critique for you.
  11. I was going to start a thread but this seems like a close enough topic. Our neighbor just found a loose ferret in our neighborhood and dumped him on us. We have two cats so cannot keep him. If you live near Boston MA and want a free ferret please let me know.
  12. Me again, I've been having problems getting the add reply and new topic buttons to fully load. I have removed the pop-up blocker and have tried to post using both IE and Firefox. Neither allows me to do anything other than the fast reply. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can get these features to work?
  13. This has to be one of my favorite threads. I'm overwhelmed by the amount of information, especially from king ubu about specifics on the recordings - dates, labels, musicians.... I love the sound from Dizzy and think his biggest contribution to jazz is the blending of different cultural sounds into jazz.
  14. Most of us have burned our collections to MP3 formats now. This is a good reminder to have a separate hard drive that contains all your most important files - for me its music and images - safely stored at a friends or parents house. The cost is about $150 for a 1.5TB drive today. Vic, glad to hear you're okay. A fire is my worst nightmare.
  15. Consider stocks that have a long track record of divided payments. Caterpillar comes to mind. I would look for about a 5% dividend and try to find a company where you think there may be longer term price increases. I mentioned Caterpillar because it seems to fit in with where the stimulus money may first be invested.
  16. To sort, go to column mode and click the column header that you want it sorted by. It toggles between A-Z and Z-A. I don't think you can get sub sorts. I hate the Genius feature. Its designed for pop tunes, not jazz. If it knows the artist, which in my case is way less than 50% of the time, then Genius is supposed to fine similar tunes. No matter what I put in, I get my wife's smooth jazz artists collection as the closest fit. I'm sure David Ware would be pleased to know that he sounds like Diane Krall. I bought a secondary market piece of software called iTunesFixit. It helps find missing artwork, composer names, etc. The only downside I've found so far is that it favors European Album Art and metadata over US tags. I'm actually okay with this as long as it gets the song info correct. The application does crash if you ask it to do too much all at once. The company knows of this bug and is releasing a fix as soon as its ready. Work in small batches of 1,000 tunes or less and you should be fine.
  17. Hawkins was one of the first jazz musicians I knew by name. I remember being in high school and having a music instructor that let me listen to some of his records. He let me borrow a record that had Hawkins playing ballads. I remember telling the teacher that I didn't like the way he stomped all over the music. My first impression was that he disregarded the rhythm section. It took me a long time to hear what he was actually doing and to accept it. Now I think he is a genius.
  18. Thank you! I allowed Organissimo.org to give me pop-ups and all is working fine.
  19. I love some of the pictures in this You will be missed! RIP Bud
  20. Female in panties? To bad there is glare from the flash
  21. Hi all. This looks like a very fun and informative forum. I've been reading up on the threads for a while now and am impressed with the level of knowledge. Me, I have a lot to learn. I never listened to Organissimo . I've been having a problem when trying to post in a thread. Hitting the reply button sends me into a page loading state where it never fully loads properly. This post is my first attempt at fast reply. I've also switched from Firefox to IE thinking that may have caused my problem. Is this a known issue with a workaround solution?
