You might check out Arturo O'Farrill's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Maybe not "avant garde," but uncommonly interesting. For example, Vijay Iyer plays on their 2014 album, "The Offense of the Drum."

I heard someone say this is billed as a "farewell" tour for the ICP. Does anyone know if there's any substance to that?

Wish I could be there for this one. The Harrison Bankhead CD on Engine Records a few years ago was awesome.

Last night, at The Royal Room in Seattle, Open Loose (Mark Helias, Tony Malaby and Tom Rainey) played two excellent muscular sets. Opening for them was a hefty new Seattle trio, consisting of Evan Flory-Barnes on bass, Neil Welch on sax and D'Vonne Lewis on drums. An excellent evening all around.

It looks like the Seahawks will be back in the Super Bowl, with a great chance to win it. Their offense has gotten much better over the season, and the defense is absolutely incredible. Personally, I hope they face the Patriots in the big #XLIX, so that Tom Brady can join Peyton Manning in the ranks of "elite" losers.
