  2. Yes, Pete Carroll made a few dumb calls in the game against Atlanta. Going for a touchdown at 4th-and-1, and not giving the ball to Marshawn Lynch. Installing the "prevent" defense at the end of the game. "Icing" the kicker. Change any of those, and the Seahawks would have won. It's really too bad because it would have been an extraordinary comeback victory. Not to take anything away from the Falcons. They played well. They can probably beat S.F. and I wish them luck. But the Seahawks will be back next year, and better than ever.

  4. Friedman is an excellent player who deserves far more attention than he receives. I had the good fortune to hear him in New York a few years ago. Sheer brilliance!
  5. As well you should, because the Falcons may have their hands full with Seattle. I don't know how many people have figured it out yet, but the Seahawks are for real. Don't be too surprised if you see a rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl after all. For real? They played a pretty soft schedule this season and with that pretend win against the Packers and an injured RG III, I'd say luck had plenty to do with it all. The Seahawks weren't so hot at the start of the season, when they were working in their rookie QB. But they beat four playoff teams during the regular season and (so far) one more in the playoffs. They compiled some fo the best defensive stats in the league, despite the slow start. In a three-week period toward the end of the season, they beat St. Louis, Buffalo and San Francisco by a combined score of 150-30. They've won eight of their last nine games. Today's team is much better than the one you saw vs. Green Bay on MNF. But obviously you're right, they're just lucky. And you'll probably say that if they beat Atlanta, too.

    Eric Dolphy

Dolphy has always been one of my favorites. His sound is so distinct and personal that I can always recognize him within seconds. His many recordings with Mingus and Coltrane, as well as his own Prestige albums, are treasures.

  19. It was a few weeks ago, but I was blown away by the J. D. Allen Trio when they played in Seattle. Allen sounds good as a sideman but he is awesome when playing his own music. He sounds a little like Trane in the Atlantic period, with some Rollins. His most recent album, "Victory!," is also excellent.

  22. The Tamarindo trio was excellent. It was very free-flowing and all three members were on the money. They appeared to be totally keyed into one another, as if they'd been playing together for years. I've only seen Malaby once before, with Ralph Alessi. That was a fine group -- and I really dig Alessi -- but in this trio Malaby played with much more freedom and power. I was particularly impressed with his soprano work. (IMO most sax players who double on soprano sound much better on their primary ax.)
  23. In Seattle, the Earshot festival juggernaut rolls on. I'll be at the Royal Room tonight to hear Tamarindo, which includes Tony Malaby on sax, William Parker on bass, and Mark Ferber on drums. I haven't heard this group, but given the track record of its members, it should be great. Also on the bill is one of Wayne Horvitz's groups, Shuffleboil, with Joe Doria on organ, Tim Young on guitar, and Bobby Previte on drums. This was not an obvious choice because Anat Cohen is appearing separately in the festival tonight at the PONCHO Concert Hall. I would have liked to see her, too!
  24. A Northwest double bill at the Earshot Jazz Festival tonight, featuring B'shnorkestra (led by trumpeter Samantha Boshnack) and a solo set by saxophonist Neil Welch.
  25. This week's "Straight, No Chaser" featured music by two great recently departed saxophonists, John Tchicai (1936-2012) and David S. Ware (1949-2012): Henry Kaiser & Wadada Leo Smith (with John Tchicai) -- "Willie Dixon" -- Yo Miles!
