  1. It sounds like Chewy had spicy burritos for a late dinner and woke up with the 'mares. It's okay fella, this is a good thing. If I were you I'd worry about that giant spider under your bed.
  2. Yes, this is the third outing by this duo for the Omnitone label.
  3. I've heard the same sentiments expressed by Charlie Kohlhase many times. Every time I've seen him perform has been an education and a hell of a lot of fun. Thanks for reminding folks about a true living legend.
  4. Very classy place you've got here. Guess I'll have to dress up (or at least put on a pair of pants) when I log on.
  5. $13.58 pre-ordered at CD Universe. I'm sure there will be other deals along the way. Even if there weren't, this is one of those instances where the music is well worth the full price. So brew at home instead of going to Starbucks for a few days. Better yet, resist the temptation to buy the latest reissue of something you already own and probably don't listen to more than once or twice a year.
  6. The info can be found at www.cityhallrecords.com/ CITY HALL EXCLUSIVE STREET DATE 1/19/10 PHILLY JOE JONES' DAMERONIA: LOOK, STOP AND LISTEN Philly Joe Jones led a ghost band dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron. This CD is a presentation of the Grammy-nominated album featuring Johnny Griffin. At the recording session, Griff was prominently positioned in front of the band wearing a white hospital scrub shirt. He asked the band to wave him on if they wanted him to play on more than the agreed upon two selections, and the whole band waved him on. This CD also includes three additional alternate takes, and was digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. Besides Philly Joe, the band features Don Sickler, Benny Powell, Frank Wess, Charles Davis, Cecil Payne, Larry Ridley and Walter Davis jr. KENNY DORHAM: THE FLAMBOYAN, QUEENS, NEW YORK, 1963 Kenny Dorham and Joe Henderson recorded six albums for Blue Note betweem April 1963 and September 1964. This Cd presents a previously unknown broadcast that predates the pair's Blue Note collaborations. In January 1963, the Dorham-Henderson quintet appeared at The Flamboyan located in Queens and named after the casino in Puerto Rico, the club was only open for about a year, but the music lives on.
  7. I prefer the unedited version of Mingus Ah Um, which first appeared in 1979. While it might not be the recording that some people first became familiar with, it does represent how the music was originally created and played. Contrary to what someone else has said, I have read that solos and passages were, in fact, edited to improve their quality and impact. Somehow, the idea of removing parts of a solo to make it tighter, cleaner, etc. seems "un-jazzy" to me, since improvisation is, by definition, "at the moment" or "on the spot", with no chance to change it except to do it again. Just think how different many of Coltrane's classic solos would have been if the same concept had been applied! And I'd hardly describe the restored material as "doodling" or "fiddling." Imo, this is one of the ten greatest jazz recordings of all time!
  8. If the couple gets tired of their tiny studio apt., they can move into this house in Boston. The so-called "Skinny House" in the North End of Boston is an extremely narrow four-story house that has the uncontested distinction of being the narrowest house in Boston. The house spans 10.4 feet at its widest point and tapers to 9.25 feet at the back, and its narrowest interior point is only 6.2 feet. It's current owners live what the Boston Globe called "a vertical life".
  9. Why would one assume that a drummer who composes music is a rarity? Is it because the drums aren't as "musical," "melodic," or "harmonic" as other instruments? That's nonsense. Some of my favorite drummers today--Andrew Cyrille, Matt Wilson, Paul Motian, Bill Stewart--have written many wonderful songs with great melodies and tight arrangements. Drummers also make great band leaders--they're at the center/heart of it all.

  12. I guess this would be a good time to remind folks that Ronnie has a new CD on Steeplechase:
  13. Not bad, but it can't hold a candle next to Satchmo's advertisement for Swiss Kriss.
  14. Good for your cat, your car, and just about everything else! It doesn't just mask the odor like other products. It contains enzymes that "eat up" the microbes that create the stink. You can find it at most pet stores.
  15. Andrew was diagnosed with brain cancer early last year and underwent two surgeries to remove the tumor. Rather than undergo radiation therapy, he became deeply involved in alternative medicine (vitamins, herbs, visualization) and has been in full remission for a while now. I enjoyed hearing Human Feel (a band that also included Chris Speed, Jim Black and Kurt Rosenwinkel) when they were based in Boston, and Andrew was always fun to talk to during his employ in the jazz dept. at Tower Records.
  16. Is that your biggest fan? for that remark, I am giving you the "smirk of a thousand deaths."
  17. Question asked... ...and answered! In other words, BB expects to make some $$.
  18. Although I like his Latin excursions, my favorite recordings of his are the earlier dates on Ken and some of the Criss Cross titles. Happy Birthday Conrad!
  19. I wanted to bring this thread back up for those who don't know, as well as for those of us that need reminding, that Bill Heid is one of the best organ players to have ever played the instrument. Every time I play one of his recordings, I'm reminded of how he can reach your mind with his inventiveness, your heart with his beautiful ballads, and your gut with his soul! Like Jim said, more people need to know about Heid. Maybe we should set up a ministry or something: "Excuse me sir, have you accepted Bill Heid as your personal savior of soul organ?" And for members of the NRA, we could show them:

  21. Not fired, but suspended for a couple of weeks. Soupy had a huge impact on my developing sense of humor as a child. Sometimes chaotic, often absurd, and most always hip and funny. I will cherish the memory of meeting him 15 years ago in NY. I apologized for being so late as I handed him 2 or 3 bucks. I explained that after much searching, I had finally found my mother's purse in my father's closet, of all places, along with a few of her old dresses. He laughed...and kept my money. Thank you so much Soupy. Rest peacefully. DO THE MOUSE!!!
  22. I agree that there's a trend, but it's much bigger than the jazz scene or performers for that matter. In the last 20 years or so, I've noticed that audiences also dress in more casual attire, and sometimes are downright sloppy. And I'm not referring to poor college students in basement jazz clubs. I'm talking about adults attending theater productions and the opera. Looking for ties and jackets? Forget it if they're under 60 or 70. You're more likely to see sweaters, jeans, sneakers, work boots - even t-shirts and baseball caps! Truly, we are the ugly Americans.
  23. Not sure how it was affixed, but sometimes, yes. More common were the rubber bands in his goatee. My dad would come home from work on Saturdays and we'd sit on the couch, eat sardines on saltine crackers, and watch Capt. Lou, Chief Jay Strongbow, Andre the Giant, Killer Kowalski, Gorilla Monsoon, etc. Fond memories. Good times. "The Sicilians" (Lou on left) R.I.P. Captain Lou
  24. Vic Mizzy, who wrote 'Addams Family' theme, dies By RAQUEL MARIA DILLON, AP Tue Oct 20, 5:54 AM EDT Vic Mizzy, a songwriter who composed the catchy themes for the 1960s sit-coms "The Addams Family" and "Green Acres," has died. He was 93. Mizzy died Saturday at his home in Bel Air, his manager Jonathan Wolfson said. He said he didn't know the cause of death. He wrote songs that were recorded by Dean Martin, Doris Day, Perry Como and Billie Holiday in the '40s and '50s. His hits included "Pretty Kitty Blue Eyes," "My Dreams are Getting Better All the Time," and "With a Hey and a Hi and a Ho-Ho-Ho." But his most famous work was the theme to "The Addams Family," a tune accented by finger snaps and opening with the cleverly quirky lyrics: "They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're altogether ooky: the Addams family." Mizzy sang the song himself and overdubbed it three times to give the impression of multiple vocalists. He also directed the title sequence where he asked actors who played members of the Addams family to snap their fingers in a bored way. The enduring tune is often heard during sports game to rally the home team. "He was smart enough to demand to own the song, which was unheard of at the time. So any time you go to a Lakers game and they play that song, he made money," Wolfson said. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mizzy learned to play the piano as a child. In his teens, he teamed up with Irving Taylor and began writing songs and sketches for variety shows. They won a pair of radio contests and toured the East Coast vaudeville circuit. While served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, the pair wrote several hit songs, including "Three Little Sisters" and "Take It Easy." Mizzy later composed and wrote songs for television and film, most recently a song for "Spiderman 2" which ended up on the DVD version of the movie. He is survived by a brother, daughter and two grandchildren. In addition to the theme to "F-Troop," these two ditties were personal favorites of mine. As a child, they were belted out with the help of a few boisterous friends. Later, as a teen, a revival might occur from time to time when said vocalists were aided by their friend "Herb." The Addams Family They're creepy and they're kooky, Mysterious and spooky, They're all together ooky, The Addams Family. Their house is a museum Where people come to see 'em They really are a scream The Addams Family. (Neat) (Sweet) (Petite) So get a witches shawl on A broomstick you can crawl on We're gonna pay a call on The Addams Family.
