  1. I wanted to bring this thread back up for those who don't know, as well as for those of us that need reminding, that Bill Heid is one of the best organ players to have ever played the instrument. Every time I play one of his recordings, I'm reminded of how he can reach your mind with his inventiveness, your heart with his beautiful ballads, and your gut with his soul! Like Jim said, more people need to know about Heid. Maybe we should set up a ministry or something: "Excuse me sir, have you accepted Bill Heid as your personal savior of soul organ?" And for members of the NRA, we could show them:
  2. You can go here: Clifford Brown
  3. Not fired, but suspended for a couple of weeks. Soupy had a huge impact on my developing sense of humor as a child. Sometimes chaotic, often absurd, and most always hip and funny. I will cherish the memory of meeting him 15 years ago in NY. I apologized for being so late as I handed him 2 or 3 bucks. I explained that after much searching, I had finally found my mother's purse in my father's closet, of all places, along with a few of her old dresses. He laughed...and kept my money. Thank you so much Soupy. Rest peacefully. DO THE MOUSE!!!
  4. I agree that there's a trend, but it's much bigger than the jazz scene or performers for that matter. In the last 20 years or so, I've noticed that audiences also dress in more casual attire, and sometimes are downright sloppy. And I'm not referring to poor college students in basement jazz clubs. I'm talking about adults attending theater productions and the opera. Looking for ties and jackets? Forget it if they're under 60 or 70. You're more likely to see sweaters, jeans, sneakers, work boots - even t-shirts and baseball caps! Truly, we are the ugly Americans.
  5. Not sure how it was affixed, but sometimes, yes. More common were the rubber bands in his goatee. My dad would come home from work on Saturdays and we'd sit on the couch, eat sardines on saltine crackers, and watch Capt. Lou, Chief Jay Strongbow, Andre the Giant, Killer Kowalski, Gorilla Monsoon, etc. Fond memories. Good times. "The Sicilians" (Lou on left) R.I.P. Captain Lou
  6. Vic Mizzy, who wrote 'Addams Family' theme, dies By RAQUEL MARIA DILLON, AP Tue Oct 20, 5:54 AM EDT Vic Mizzy, a songwriter who composed the catchy themes for the 1960s sit-coms "The Addams Family" and "Green Acres," has died. He was 93. Mizzy died Saturday at his home in Bel Air, his manager Jonathan Wolfson said. He said he didn't know the cause of death. He wrote songs that were recorded by Dean Martin, Doris Day, Perry Como and Billie Holiday in the '40s and '50s. His hits included "Pretty Kitty Blue Eyes," "My Dreams are Getting Better All the Time," and "With a Hey and a Hi and a Ho-Ho-Ho." But his most famous work was the theme to "The Addams Family," a tune accented by finger snaps and opening with the cleverly quirky lyrics: "They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're altogether ooky: the Addams family." Mizzy sang the song himself and overdubbed it three times to give the impression of multiple vocalists. He also directed the title sequence where he asked actors who played members of the Addams family to snap their fingers in a bored way. The enduring tune is often heard during sports game to rally the home team. "He was smart enough to demand to own the song, which was unheard of at the time. So any time you go to a Lakers game and they play that song, he made money," Wolfson said. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mizzy learned to play the piano as a child. In his teens, he teamed up with Irving Taylor and began writing songs and sketches for variety shows. They won a pair of radio contests and toured the East Coast vaudeville circuit. While served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, the pair wrote several hit songs, including "Three Little Sisters" and "Take It Easy." Mizzy later composed and wrote songs for television and film, most recently a song for "Spiderman 2" which ended up on the DVD version of the movie. He is survived by a brother, daughter and two grandchildren. In addition to the theme to "F-Troop," these two ditties were personal favorites of mine. As a child, they were belted out with the help of a few boisterous friends. Later, as a teen, a revival might occur from time to time when said vocalists were aided by their friend "Herb." The Addams Family They're creepy and they're kooky, Mysterious and spooky, They're all together ooky, The Addams Family. Their house is a museum Where people come to see 'em They really are a scream The Addams Family. 11. i received mine as well, which leads me to ask this question: ANYONE WANT TO BUY A BRAND NEW COLTRANE BOX? I'LL SELL IT TO YOU FOR $5000!!! No? Guess I'll go over to the Hoffman forum.
  12. Yes, thank you. My disappointment over missing the chance to see Weston perform is outweighed by my relief that he is safe and in good health.
  13. I just received word that Weston's scheduled performance next Monday in the Boston area has been "postponed until further notice." I sure hope he is well. I'll look for any news and report back here.
  14. I create a distraction while the boy grabs Ol' Betsy from over the fireplace and aims her right at 'em!
  15. Does that mean we'll get groupies here too?
  16. So, if someone like Bixieland were in your home and acted the way he behaved here, you would simply ignore him? You might say that this is not a fair comparison, but this is how I view the board. Jim and the rest of the band have created a home for people like us in which we can share our thoughts and opinions. We are their guests and should behave as such. Of course there's room for disagreement and for passionate exchanges of different views. However, when someone repeatedly shows disrespect for their hosts and the other guests, no one should be surprised when that person is shown the door.
  17. I just purchased a ticket - first row in the balcony. That'll be me whooping it up when you come on stage, Steve.
  18. I did a little searching and found it! Rick Torme Banner
  19. Yes, indeed. And Hoagy Carmichael, too. I'm pretty sure Norm doesn't mean Great American Songbook stuff, although that's deflintely pop. If we stick to the sixties and later, we'll probably get somewhere near what Norm wants. Except I don't know if he means to include black pop or not. A lot of black pop does very well in jazz as they're not too far apart in the first place. Let's say People get ready A change is gonna come Shake Ain't that peculiar Sookey sookey Let the music take your mind Slippin' into darkness Inner city blues What's goin' on Papa's got a brand new bag Ain't it funky now Sing a simple song Who's gonna take the weight Love the life you live (Your love is) so doggone good Papa was a rolling stone Endless love Living for the inner city Higher ground Don't you worry 'bout a thing All in love is fair (four from one LP!) In the heat of the night Secret agent man Concrete jungle I no get eye for back When a man loves a woman Goin' out of my head Barefootin' Cissy Strut Ain't no sunshine Doctor Feelgood Just my imagination Young, gifted and black Theme from Shaft See? There's plenty. MG what are the jazz versions of these tunes?
  20. Let's start flooding the Internet with a new catch-phrase to express outrage toward an outside party. The catch-phrase is: Those Fucking Wombats!
