  1. "X" was a branch of RCA Victor and used the same recording facilities. All the mainstream jazz sessions from the mid-fifties on these label sound great, often recorded with only one mcrophone in front of the band. These guys knew how to balance their sound without amplification and mixing. Seems like the Urbie Green Xmas album (mono from 1954) was never reissued. Great playing of a true all star band.
  2. This is now available from JPC at € 166,99 - too expensive for me.
  3. The one I posted is from the very first "issue". It's the only cover I ever saw.
  4. Another sad loss, but a life fulfilled. R.I.P.
  5. Maybe I still have it on some external hard drive. I will have a look later.
  6. As long as the mud is warm ... and thereafter your utterings may be less interesting to others.
  7. Such sad news. He was great. R.I.P.
  8. That's a painting by Max Klinger, showing the three great loves of his early life.
  9. My impression is that those Vanguard sessions have the spirit of camaraderie and group feeling that some of the best Verve sessions have, without that competitive hard driving atmosphere of JATP. Some of the best studio mainstream jazz you can get.
  10. I have some of these on reissue LPs and cheapo Avid box sets (the only way to get much of this music) and I expect much better sound from the Mosaic. There is a Mel Powell Trio session with Paul Quinichette and Bobby Donaldson that may be the best or arguably most prgressive jazz that Quinichette ever recorded. The music you listed would fill five CDs, so I hope at least the Nat Pierce will be included.
  11. Sorry that I didn't take part, I wanted but was busy with too many things and bedridden with a cold for the last two weeks. Had a cursory listen but not the energy to post anything. Just remember I recognized the first two tracks after a few notes. Will have to take time for another listen later this month. Thanks for compiling, anyway. p.s. please ad Bill Summers to the Headhunters personnel. Besides being one of my biggest inspirations, he was and is the driving force behind the band, together with Mike Clark. Check out their latest albums on Bandcamp, there are some great tracks on them.
  12. Doug Hammond Linda Sharrock Jeanne Lee Don Cherry Karl Berger (moved to the US and back)
  13. Seconded.
  14. This afternoon, James P. Johnson, Disc One
  15. I like this one: https://www.discogs.com/release/4382058-Various-The-King-RB-Box-Set https://www.discogs.com/master/1067750-Various-The-OKeh-Rhythm-Blues-Story-1949-1957
  16. Had to cancel a listening session at a friend's place with a very expensive Hi-Fi, so I stay in bed listening to some of the CDs I selected to bring, all solo piano:
  17. 1962 and 1963
  18. Warm air ike from a hair dryer may work (put the record out, of course). Keep it at a distance for mild heat, until the glue melts. Solvents may affect the printing on the sleeve.
