  1. Charette was not the first with a solo organ album - there were Rhoda Scott and Jeff Palmer. But he's great!
  2. That's because her piano style is unique: Classical training, but absorbing whatever she heard and played in church as a child, then folk and jazz as she matured. She didn't care about categories or stylistics. She liked Ellington and Oscar Peterson, but never imitated anybody. Bach counterpoint and deep black people's music roots. A world of her own.
  3. I agree with Big Beat Steve. These albums were a mix of previously released tracks, alternates, and some unissued tracks. I think most were added to the CD reissues, but some may have been overlooked. A few albums still await reissue, like the Paul Horn Quartet album. One has a hard time trying to find out whether tracks already issued are alternates or edits.
  4. This series? https://www.discogs.com/label/92704-Jazz-West-Coast https://www.discogs.com/release/15930468-Various-Jazz-West-Coast-An-Anthology-Of-California-Music-/image/SW1hZ2U6NDg4MTYwNzQ=
  5. The story of Stan Getz's behaviour makes it nearly impossible for me to enjoy his music.
  6. If I hadn't bought these long ago I would consider asking for shipping to Europe. Two excellent box sets in good sound.
  7. Listening through all of Nina Simone's recordings in preparation of an evening with excerpts from her autobiography and audio and video for my friends later this month.
  8. R.I.P. He did some excellent discographical work. And he was a nice man.
  9. Oh yes, R.I.P.
  10. Frankfurt really profits from the HIP department of of its music university - the students are really eager to perform and found their own ensembles and try to find locations to play. This weekend was particularly rich. On Thursday I witnessed the first concert in a new series, presenting music from the 17th and 18th centuries in a modern art gallery, whose owner loves the music. There will a concert on every last thursday in the month. The first has pieces for solo viola da gamba by Tobias Hume and Telemann, and duets and trios by Boismortier, Wranitzky, and Bruni. Violist FRancesca Venturi Ferriolo, whon initiated the series, was delighted to see me again. Great ambience and an attentive audience. Last night, another group od HIP students from China, Japan, and Korea presented their Ensemble Otium in a church in a Frankfurt suburb. Moeko Aiba played the best performance of a Bach solo cello suite I ever heard! More great music by Bach, his son Wilhelm Friedemann, Johann Gottlieb Graun, Telemann, and Vivaldi. This afternoon it will be Frankfurt Baroque Lab in another Frankfurt church. I feel blessed to be able to hear so much good music on period instruments!
  11. The weekend bottle: Château de Jau Rouge "Dandy" 2022 Côtes du Roussillon-Villages
  12. https://seuletoile.fr/en/sound-sound-post-horn-es-ruft-das-posthorn/ https://www.ensembleartifices.fr This is the earliest horn concerto ever written!
  13. Almost forgot to post the weekend bottle: Roberto Sarotto Barolo 2016 "San Ponzio"
  14. This was on my want list for so long. I was not disappointed. Love it! This was the album that made me get connected to his music.
  15. Many labels liked to have blues singers backed by jazz players - there is this Brother John Sellers LP on Vanguard with Basie-ites in the band. Prestige/Bluesville made many, or Atlantic for their R & B sessions. No real borderline between jazz and blues and R & B.
