  1. I have this on a French RCA LP reissue, but would have to listen to it again. It was recorded in two sessions starting at 11.00 am and ending at 1.00 am in the morning, with a two hour lunch break in between. Due to Chaloff's declining health Charlie Kane played the ensembles on the second session. Let me listen again before I comment on Chlaoff's form on this session ...
  2. Of all those Americans in Germany making careers as pop stars, he remained the jazziest. He moderated the Sunday jazz radio show in Frankfurt's Hessischer Rundfunk for many years.
  3. Blue Serge is a baritone sax classic!
  4. I had the original LP, and have the CD, and like this album, but compared to Carmen McRae with the CBBB and partly the same songs you notice that McRae sings in a higher league. No concerts near where I live, and if so, probably too expensive for my budget.

    Benny Golson

I once saw him live as a guest with a local big band. He played a long solo filled with bop, blues, and r&b licks but they all sounded amazingly fresh. You cannot hear that quality in any of the younger players.

    Benny Golson

It was originally issued in both versions!

Our Spanish friends reissued this. The Fresh Sound is a reissue of the pure jazz version. Both editions are oop. https://www.discogs.com/release/9786341-Various-The-Complete-Triple-Play-Stereo-Sessions https://www.discogs.com/master/579951-Benny-Golson-Just-Jazz
  8. I just tried the CD on three different players we have here, Marantz, micromega, and Pioneer, and all three play it back without any problems. Even my more than 30 years old DVD player accepts it. Maybe your machines do not like the music?
  9. July 16, 2023 - Baroque Night at the Frankfurt musical academy, period performance department. (detailed review to follow - elaborate renovation work in our apartment kept me busy)
  10. It is only the second time some of his music has been recorded, although he had a good reputation and three of his collections were printed. Rebecca Pechefsky was the first to play some of his pieces, which I put in the player follwing above CD, bought today after a concert of Karla Schröter. http://concert-royal.info http://www.quillmusic.com/images/QC_1005_large_MINI_website.jpg http://www.quillmusic.com
  11. Listing corrected after the listing in the Mosaic Select booklet. No idea what "Tambauri" is supposed to be. Trumpets and French Horn changed for the last session, I made a collective listing. Oh how I love those alphabetical instrument listings on discogs ....
  12. Contrary to the recent Coltrane "discovery", no info about the circumstances of the find. Sound is good, bass a bit too low in the mix, and the sound man took a few bars to open the vocal mic, but otherwise it's okay.
  13. The Complete Clef/Norgran/Verve sessions of Louis Bellson If they can do Buddy Rich, why not Bellson? Lots of Ellingtonians and other good soloists here.
