Sad news. He was the # 1 baritone on the Latin Jazz scene for many, many years. He toured Europe last year or so with his own band, saw him on TV with it. He will be missed.

Earl Grey tea: -
I'm glad I had paid OJCs more attention than most members - I already had all the Don Patterson, Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Blue Mitchell, Kenny Burrell, Herbie Mann, Sonny Rollins (Riverside and Contemporary) and many other single and twofer CDs, Yusef Lateef, Abbey Lincoln, Ernie Henry on LP, as well as the Monk (both), Modern Jazz Quartet, Wes Montgomery, Joe Henderson, Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus, Bill Evans Riverside, Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins Prestige box sets - that helped quite a bit.

p.s. I was real mad that Concord would not ship to Europe during their sellout - it probably was (and still is) against their distribution contract with Universal in Europe. I depended on what Zweitausend offered or threw in their sellout bins or what amazon sellers offered at reasonable prices. Got about 10 discs from Newbury Comics ebay auctions during the last two weeks - still real cheap, although shipping is not.

I knew you'd all be too lazy to list them all ..... I, too, was afraid of looking at the sheer number of them, but wanted to be honest to myself, at least. So, how many, do you estimate?

Xavier Cugat RCA recordings (late 30's, early 40's)
mikeweil replied to Big Al's topic in Recommendations
I have to of them and can recommend them - good sound, classic selections, including Miguelito Valdes' famous Babalú. The earlier recordings on these Tumbao CDs are far more interesting muscially than the later stuff. If you wanna dig deeper, there is another CD on Harlequin without duplications of the Tumbao discs. -

That said: I don't understand why Kevin Mahogany made the list of this poll. I find he has a nice voice and good intonation and swings, I saw him live a few years ago and he was great!

I really dig the two Kenny Dorham vocal tracks Fantasy unearthed when they prepared the CD reissue of his first LP on Debut. Still hunting for the Riverside vocal album he did.

How fitting: My wife and I just finished watching the DVD of Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain ..... -
IIRC Spaulding's first as a leader was an Ellington tribute on Storyville. It somehow disappointed me because it was a relatively conservative outing, so I sold it. I kept checking his later LPs but nothing really knocked me out as much as some of his solos on his Blue Note sideman dates.

Oh, it's just to enable everyone to get an idea of who ....... with whom -
Visited the Red Octopus store during our anniversary vacation week in Vienna to buy the second volume of the Erich Kleinschuster Sextet with guests Art Farmer, Jimmy Heath, and Slide Hampton: Their store is nice with an excellent selection, but not cheap. Bought several reduced items at Extraplatte: The Herbie Nichols Project - Dr. Cyclops' Dream (Soul Note) Tom Varner - Long Night Big Day (New World Records) Don Braden - The New Hang (High Note) ... and, most importantly, a rare and hard to find CD with organ works by Jehan Titelouze played by Jean-Charles Ablitzer on a recently restored organ at Finistère, Brittany (audiophile recording on Harmonic Records, sounding terrific!) (Titelouze was the first French organ composer of note - the more surprising it is there is no CD devoted to his works available.) A visit at Vienna's prime classical store, Gramola, unearthed: Handel, Harpsichord works Vol. 3 - Sophie Yates (Chaconne) Darius Milhaus, Organ works - George Baker (Solstice)

About to brew me a pot of Earl Grey tea ... -
I've always liked Spaulding's alto, especially when he played those soaring lines where others were busy running scales and licks. I've always thought that he should have got his own date as a leader for Blue Note in the mid to late 1960's and that he didn't get as much credit for his work as he deserved - he had it all down, from straight hard bop to boogaloo dates and free form stuff. Hubbard never gave him a chance to really show what he could do. He was great in Hutcherson's quintet - this date and the Sam Rivers Involution are my favourite Blue Notes with him.

Thanks, J.A.W., for the list - seems I deleted that e-mail before I opened it to prevent financial ruin ...

Ginnie Powell?

I second (or third or whatever) the recommendation of those HEP and Circle issues - I have a lot of them on LP. There are multiple takes of several tracks, but all are good. That Earle Spencer band is a nice recommendation, Chuck!
-
There's a Denon/Savoy CD called "Jewells" ('cause the tracks were originally recorded for the Jewell label). Terrific sound for mid-1940's and a representative selection.
-
Marcus, can you please post a list of participants?

Sad news indeed. Did he ever play with Globe Unity? I think I saw him live with that band .....

Monk was the leader on both Blue Note sessions with Milt Jackson. They were just reissued along with Bags' one session as there was no other Blue Note material with Bags as the leader. I'd say Monk was a sideman on the Clark Terry Riverside date. Same for the Gryce - though Monk is so characteristic that he tends to dominate. But nominally on the first issue, a Gryce date. The Giants of Jazz were an All-Star group. The Blakey Atlantic was billed as "Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk" - so I'd say he was a guest star. The way the band plays it sounds more like a Messengers date to me than one of Monk's.
