  1. Only problem is: all of these instruments were altered in the course of the 19th century to increase their volume to fill the larger modern concert halls. And they're too expensive for period instrument performers who would have them re-built to original measures. So what we hear today is certainly not the sound the maker intended. Furthermore, gut strings were used back then, etc. Get some info on violin making and you will understand. To my taste, a violin with gut strings sounds much sweeter.
  2. Yes, that Tyner track - I had that sound in my head but couldn't remember where I heard it. Since the dulcimer is basically a chordal instrument on a modal basis, it's jazz potential is very limited. You only can strum rhythmic patterns much like a rhythm guitar but not change keys as deliberately.
  3. When looking up Johnny Lytle sessions this morning I found Carter plays electric on Lytle's Milestone LP "The Soulful Rebel".
  4. ... but with those awful pickups it rarely sounds as wonderful. I have only two adequate recordings: - Michel Sardaby's "Voyage" from 1984, and audiophile recording with just one pair of mics, on the French Harmonic label - Johnny Griffin's "The Kerry Dancers" on Riverside (the OJC CD might still be around)
  5. You're right, of course, but if Mosaic gets around to do the Decca stuff as well, this is really going to rock the house. Musically, the Victor's are on a much higher level, but the Decca's are the birth of R&B.
  6. Herbie Mann's very last CD "Eastern European Roots" has cymbalom player Alexander Fedoriouk. But this is the hammered type: But wasn't the initial question for the plucked/strummed type, the real dulcimer? Looks like this: Colin Walcott used one of these on the original recording of "Witchi-Tai-To" on one of Oregon's earliest records, but it wasn't jazz ...
  7. sh.... happens .....
  8. Hell yeah! This will be goin' to rock the house!
  9. I confirm: See a doctor NOW! I had a similar thing four years ago, but on both feet, in the end it was a psychosomatic appearance, and after the causes were cleared it went like it came. But I got myself checked for cardiac etc. causes, which are very probable, especially if it is one-sided. I do not want to frighten you, but please check! p.s. please report!
  10. Thanks! Would be much appreciated! Longer tracks with plenty solos, somewhat in between the Atlantic soul/Cuban style of Mongo and Hubert Laws, and the Blue Thumb LP. Better than I thought. p.s. I have a copy of the Collectables double CD with Gasca's Little Giant and the Ira Sullivan album for sale.
  11. Always watch your grammar ..... I should have written "best Europeans" to distinguish him from "Americans in Europe". And I wrote "one of the best", not "the best". Bachträgl was one of the best (native) European jazz drummers. I love Klook, of course, and he was the greatest inspriration for them all.
  12. Probably the best solution, as those who love the music are the best advocates. Added the Ashby to my never ending wish list. Please post here how the Melvin Jackson is.

I have to admit I like the two larger group Blue Notes the best. Saw her live in a trio context, but somehow she couldn't mesmerize me, although she was thoroughly competent and swinging. Same with her trio LPs. But I might try the one with Cox and Cyrille - is that still available? And I always liked her playing as a sidewoman.
  14. Yes they even beats the Mosaics 'cause they're not afraid of using colour! The booklets are the most elaborate I know. Wish they would do more jazz.
  15. I love Stellar Regions! It's Trane's spiritual and musical freedom paired with beauty! Open your mind and listen - this is not a restrained compilation, but a complete session (one track was on the last album he prepared fro release, Expression).
  16. Got the Fresh Sound CD this morning, sound is okay, and the music is excellent! Great solos from all involved, the rhythm sections swing the hell out of the arrangements (Ray Bryant, Kenny Burrell, Frankie Dunlop, Charli Persip etc.), Slide Hampton shares the arranger credits. Glad I got it! Highly recommended!
  17. Now is it the chest hair or the sweat that makes it ugly ......
  18. Johnny Lytle was in my mailbox this morning: But it hardly was sounding through my living room when a Fedex delivery man rang the doorbell (and it really is a doorbell sounding like to vibraphone bars!) and brought a package from Barcelona I had ordered on Sunday evening (they're the fastest service I know!):
  19. Feel alive? That guy only feels alive when his schlong is banging against his thighs????
  20. I like them best in LP sized boxes - you have large format booklets with large format photos!
  21. Tres Palabras is one of the most beautiful boleros I have heard! One that comes close is the old danzón Angóa - but the mariachis won't be able to handle that one!
  22. That drummer, Erich Bachträgl, was one of the best we had in Europe at the time - technically as good as Antolini, but not as flashy, playing more for the band.
  23. Well I think the recording could be better. But I love the music! I wore out a copy back then! Duke's Rhodes attachments provide a haunting atmosphere. Great rhythm players - Carmelo Garcia, Victor Pantoja and Fancisco Aguabella are among the greatest!
  24. This is, BTW, available from Fresh Sound.
  25. Randy Weston's Little Niles LP with Liston is available as a vinyl reissue, for those interested: weblink
