  1. Yes, there was only one LP with Sonny Clark as the leader on Time. As I noted in my original post, the other Time album I was referring to had Benny Green as the leader. The title "Sonny's Crip" appears on both of them. On the Benny Green album, the tune labeled "Sonny's Crip" is the same as the tune labeled "Sonny's Crib" on Blue Note. In contrast, on the Time album with Sonny as the leader, the piece titled "Sonny's Crip" is something entirely different. Just listen to it, and then to "Sonny's Crib." I ask again: is the piece titled "Sonny's Crip" on the Time album with Sonny as the leader, a piece that he had earlier recorded under a different title. Now I get you! You're right, that's two entirely different pieces. The Time/Bainbridge Bennie Green liner tells: Hard to tell what happened. Both are blues, someone should compare the changes. Someone else with a complete Sonny Clark collection should listen through the heads of all of his own tunes.
  2. But who would have left some unopened .....
  3. That question popped up in my mind, too ...
  4. As I said I saw him quite often before his last recording period for Verve. It became predictable after a while, same tunes, similar verrrrry long solos ..... What I liked about Keepnews producing Henderson was that he kept pushing him in all kinds of directions he never would have taken by himself - the results were always interesting, and sometimes great.
  5. Well, this is his current label, so it should be approved or even initiated by him.
  6. I like Rodney Jones' playing a lot, but he expressed some dissatisfaction with his earlier recording sessions - all one shot deals without much preparation. Was this released with his consent?
  7. I think it would make more sense to issue individual CDs of those artists with enough material to fill one or two discs, and put all the miscellaneous stuff in the box. I, too have the R&B box and discs by T-Bone Walker and professor Longhair - so what?
  8. I kill slugs with some special granulate that's attractive only to them - after eating it they simply hide away and pass out. We have plenty of protected snails in the garden, so no beer or whatever would kill the snails. We had two squirrels - one drowned in the rain barrel (six weeks without rain this spring, seems it was real thirsty), and my wife accidentally smashed the other's head when closing the kitchen window ..... so that problem is solved.
  9. Now that I've listened to it once again I get Al's point about the nearness to the Hubbard CTIs - but I also hear big differences: 1) the sound (none of RVG's overly big room ambience and booming bass - this here sounds a lot more natural and the Fender Rhodes piano clear and direct. 2) the playing concept is less fusion/funky and more jazzy - Creed taylor wouldn't have allowed so many standards and acoustic piano. In spite of Hancock, Carter, and DeJohnette being on so many CTIs they seem to play in a much more open fashion, without falling into late 1960's Miles quintet clichés.
  10. He mistakenly has this as album description header:
  11. Seller got the idea:
  12. No tattoos here - never could have one made. Same for piercings, not even earrings. Funny what people tell about wedding rings - I always take mine off as soon as I am at home, but would feel stark naked if I forgot to put it on when I go to town ..... Our Godson took me to an exhibition on tattoos and piercings a few months ago - very interesting testimonies by the people who had allowed being photographed more or less in the nude to show their stuff. A joint project of ethnological and media museums.
  13. I remember checking one record store (or rather electricity goods store that carried records alongside lamps, toasters, etc.) 30 years ago in Mainz and asked if they had any jazz Lps. The young girls said they were afraid they hadn't any, and commented "that's with real improvisation and the like?"
  14. She did a live album at the Montreux festival which is terrific, almost extreme compared to other bossa nova singers. The rest leaves me indifferent.
  15. Since I got cancellations for two upcoming autumn/winter projects I'm out of the game. And those surcharges .... maybe we should alert ebay to get a fairer deal the second time around. There are a few sets I don't have in the batch: Spann/Hopkins Chaloff Kenton James P. Johnson Tristano Milburn Brown Atlantic New Orleans etc. but still ..... my wife would kill me, especially since we need a new car .....
  16. Our tastes and collection gaps seem to be virtually identical, it appears ....
  17. Right now it's at $ 2.225.00 - not too high. Whew - could sell the half I'm not interested in or already have and break even with a bit of luck ..... I'll watch it.
  18. Same here - sent him a private e-mail but didn't get a reply. Next time I will be up there (some time this summer) I will drop by his place.
  19. Just received this - sounds great! (Brighter than the Savoy Cool California LP transfer.)
  20. I can see what he's talking about: Bailey's snare sounds somewhat crisper and higher pitched than others. That's a question to place on some specialised drummers forum.
  21. ... and I've deleted mine - didn't want to appear too greedy for the set
